... read more

After breakfast we walked back over to the port, purchase our insurance, picked up the car and hit the road. On our way south we stopped in a small town called Ephesus to check out some ruins. This was far better than what we expected. It outshines anything we saw in Athens, Greece. We arrived in Bodrum Turkey, a very nice coastal town, around 5pm. There were many nice restaurants, hotels and shops that lined the marina. It’s about 2 or 3 weeks prior to high season so we easily found a great place to stay and nice place for dinner. Not only is this place comparable to some of the southern coastal towns in France it is also a fraction of the price. Very nice stop. News flash- Al’s bag has made its way back ... read more

Hi All. Taken a while to get the blog up and running as we've needed decent internet connections to put any pictures up. We spent about 7 days in Turkey, flew into Dalaman, long bus ride to Bodrum to see Becca. We stayed at her lovely house with amazing views. She was our guided tour for the week, and helped us with our Turkish. We also hired a scooter for a couple of days and cruised around Bodrum. Weather was great, warmer and less windy than it had been in the UK ! Not a great deal to report but it's been a great start to our travels. ... read more

I got in at 4.30pm and went straight to Bodrum Backpackers, where I met Ria (kiwi chick) and Pascal (from manly). We went out for dinner along the beach. A massive steak from 1st stop, $20 for a glass of wine, entrée and monster sizzling steak. An early night for me coz I’m planning a day of photography tomorrow. Tarik gave me some tips on where to go for photos, he’s a budding photographer too and works at the hostel. It’s a gorgeous day, the sun is out and reflecting on the turquoise water. The boats are all in the harbour with their flags flying and everyone is looking relaxed. I headed straight to the Castle of St Peter. Built in 1402, it’s so impressive and even has a museum of underwater archaeology within, housing finds ... read more

I stared at the departure schedule in disbelief. There was no way it could be correct, despite being posted on a big sign in huge permanent letters. An uneasy feeling, almost nausea, crept into my stomach when I remembered where I had gotten the schedule information in the first place. It seemed that my guidebook had another big strike against it, nothing new there. I walked into the tiny waterfront shop and asked the man what the schedule for the hydrofoil to Rhodes was. He looked at me with a dumbfounded look on his face and pointed to the large sign that I had seen by the door. I stepped outside and stared out across the water while I took a moment to think about what the ‘new’ schedule meant to me. I had initially planned ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302Kate: We just finished packing and the boys took their last swim in the pool. We all want to stay in Turkey, but we want to go home at the same time. We went to a farewell tea with Amishay's family. Alp Doan had been sick, but he was feeling better and was in a good mood. Alex made squeaky noises at him and Alp Doan made squeaky noises back and they were both giggling. Nazli offered to let us take Alp Doan back to America with us, but Alex did not want to be a big brother.Josh: My heart's being torn in half (Alex: mine too!). I'm thinking about maybe going to Turkey next summer. Maybe we will win the lottery. Yesterday the Shaggy Dog was shorn. He tried to resist, but to ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302We've been lying pretty low the last few days, dividing much of our time between the pool and the beach and socializing with our friends. The socializing has unfortunately been cut back a bit because little Ipek and Alp Doan both have been sick. They both went down on the same day, so we're all wondering where they got it. Luckily it seems to be a little person's virus and no one else has been ill. Still, it's kind of a bummer. No late night parties when there are sick babies--all the moms have to stay home. This morning we headed to Yalikavak for our last market day. I felt myself getting a little choked up at the notion that we won't be able to shop there any more will all of the beautiful produce. ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302We had Amishay up to the pool yesterday mornng. Nazli, his mother, could not come because her little boy broke her glasses that morning--some things are the same everywhere. In the afternoon our Turkish landlord stopped by to see how we were doing. I had gotten a parking ticket (in spite of the fact that there was no NO PARKING sign) and he translated it for me. It turns out that they don't give you a set fine. They ask that you visit the office and then they will tell you what the consequences are. I have the vision of walking in and scratching off a ticket to see what I've lost. Levent is giving it to the car rental guys to deal with and I'll settle up with them.We went late to the ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302Yesterday we hosted friends up at our pool for a while and then headed down to the beach. We called it "baby day" because much of the activity was centered around playing with our two toddler friends. Kids and adults fetched water from the sea for Alp Doan and Ipek to play with and Ipek had a day of beauty that included doing her hair and nails (in a very stylish blue). It has been wonderful becoming part of the long-time resident community. Whenever we arrive there is always someone there we know, even if they don't speak English and our Turkish is till lousy. We exchange pleasantries in Turkish and watch the kids play. More often than not their is a group of 15 or 20 of us milling about from seat to ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302Our days have been split between the beach and the pool, but our social lives have become quite the whirl. Since summer is winding down we're all trying to make the most of our last days. Last night I was invited for a "Girls Night Out" in Turkbuku which is where the Rich and Famous go when they visit Bodrum. It has a line of shops and upscale restaurants along the water. They all looked very inviting, but we contented ourselves with strolling up and down the strand on Star Patrol. We saw a very famous Turkish movie star (I promise I'll get the name later). My friends asked what time the night life kicks off and the answer was midnight--too late for me. So we pulled up stakes and headed back to Gundogan ... read more
