We had Amishay up to the pool yesterday mornng. Nazli, his mother, could not come because her little boy broke her glasses that morning--some things are the same everywhere. In the afternoon our Turkish landlord stopped by to see how we were doing. I had gotten a parking ticket (in spite of the fact that there was no NO PARKING sign) and he translated it for me. It turns out that they don't give you a set fine. They ask that you visit the office and then they will tell you what the consequences are. I have the vision of walking in and scratching off a ticket to see what I've lost. Levent is giving it to the car rental guys to deal with and I'll settle up with them.
We went late to the beach. Kate stayed home to work on her school log entries for her reading. She got the books read in the first week of summer, but of course, the writing slipped her mind for a while. We met a couple from the UK and Josh had a good time talking with one of their sons. The sea was a little rough, but fun to bounce
around in.
We got home in time to shower adn change for our dinner with Burchin and her family. They prepared "with love" a dinner of borek, a bulgher dish with tomatoes and greens, salad and a warm dessert made with nut called Helva. It is made with semolina, milk, nuts and sugar primarily and it traditionally served for Kandil (which we celebrated yesterday for the second time). This Kandil was the "forgiveness of sins" Kandil. We didn't do anything else to observe the day, but it was mentioned that Ramadan is coming up soon.
It was another big group and a fun time. We got home well after 11. When I got home I was reflecting on how warm and loving the atmosphere is here. I've felt more "at home" in some ways here than I have anywhere else I've ever lived. We have another night out tomorrow. I wish Alex would take a nap, but I'm sure he won't and we'll probably have to leave earlier.
Josh: Last night we went to Burchin's house. When we got there they served us some very good cheese borek and soda and little almond things that were kind of egg-shaped. A little into our
dinner Amishay walked by and they invited him up too. He demanded for me and Alex to go to his house to play computer games. Mom said no and we talked and ate for a while longer. Later, to be polite to him, our moms gave the OK and we went over to his house. We went to a site called Addictive Games and he showed us one or two. After a while while I was going back, a dog started chasing me and tried to bite my leg. A guy came out an told the dog to beat it. When I got back, lots of people swarmed around me to see if I was OK. I was fine. The dog just licked and nipped at me a little. After a little bit we got some ice cream. It was pistachio and a little bit of vanilla. The pistachio was kind of good, but it had an odd tang to it. We chatted some more and they got out a bag of sunflower seeds. I was getting tired and I was running out of tissues (I have a runny nose) and it was nearly midnight so we decided to go home.
