The snack on the plane to Copenhagen, Denmark was croutons. It was strange and I didn't quite know what to do with them, it was very confusing. So I just waited and watched everyone else-- they opened them up and ate them. So that's what I did. ... read more

12/02-1/03 This 3 week trip had two purposes: to visit some of my Eastern European friends and to finally go to Belarus. I was successful on both counts. I flew to Budapest, but immediately went Kosice in Slovakia to visit some friends there. I went back to Budapest after that to spend New Year's with Attila my friendfrom when I was studying in Prague. I then took a train north to Warsaw to spent time with my friend Radek and to arrange a visa for Belarus. I spent the next 8 days in Minsk, Europe's only dictatorship. Since the town was almost destroyed completely after WW2, the Communists were able to start from scratch when rebuilding Minsk. They certainly left a mark. Wide boulevards and gigantic government buildings along with drab apartment blocks, define this city. ... read more

To arrive in Naxos after such quiet was great. Its quite a big island with a very busy but not over crowded port; the water was still a reassuring emerald green. We had two nights in Hora (the port town) and one them was spent a a funky little open air cinema a short walk from our hotel. Saw a pretty average movie but it was bliss to be released from the usual dinner routine that by now is growing a little tiresome (i know you thought I'd never get sick of eating!). We explored the small old town of Naxos too, visiting the small archaeological museum that had some interesting artefacts found on the island. After Hora we decided to find a quiet beach so we rented our very small car and drove around ... read more

Just completed the Cornish chapter. No more pasties and cream teas. Progressing onto Welsh cakes and leeks. Visited lots of beautiful places, cute fishing villages including Mousehole complete with its cat and glorious beaches being pounded by turquoise seas. Lands End was a little commercialised but the cliffs were spectacular. Nearly visited Jamie Oliver's restaurant in Watergate Bay but read the menu and decided to sniff the smells eminating from the kitchen instead. It worked out being much cheaper. Spent a stunning night on the middle of Dartmoor, lots of mares and foals trotting about, skylarks twittering above and at peace with the world. Sounds very ideal at the moment, mind you the sun is shining, if it was raining I'm sure we'd have a different tale to tell. ... read more

ExcangeTaina RoihaSo, two months to go. On 10th August, I'll be on my way to USA, Iowa. I'm so excited! Still many things to do, though I believe (and hope) that the biggest and hardest part is over. And by that I mean the paper war. The worst and most wonderful part will be the flights there. I've never traveled alone not to mention this far! But no worries (yet), I'll manage. I'll come back here when it's time, until that I can be found from my other blog. World, here I come!... read more

Hey everyone this is matt and tony writing, We are haviing an amazing time here in Berlin, one of the most lively and historically significant cities we have visited so far. Last night we planned to take the night off of the hooch but that quickly changed once we met two crazy american dudes from montana, as well as a couple more Ozzies who had a bar cased out already. After dominiating the americans in a few drinking games, we headed off on the Sbaun to an old bombed out 5 story squat which was bombed out during the second world war and reconverted in to a bar. This place was crazy, didnät have to buy drinkins from the bar since we could just walk up the street and get them from the convinience store. ... read more

it was sad leaving dublin, but we were excited to see what else was in store for us. we took an early morning ryanair flight to london stansted and then a train that connected to the london metro (tube) system. we stayed in the hyde park/kensington gardens part of london...very nice, peaceful...nothing like the big city itself. however, we still felt like there was a lot to see right around our hostel. the first day we found a market and bought bread, cheese, chicken, and fruit to eat and took it to the park. we sat under a tree in the cool shade and ate. it was a nice way to relax after starting our day off so early. we continued the day with a walk through the middle of kensington gardens and along the edge ... read more

Hi everybody! Just a quick message to give our thoughts on London before we head off on our Contiki tour tomorrow morning :) After a long and arduous trip from Aswan, Egypt we were glad to arrive in a modern city with all the creature comforts we're used to (and then some!). Fresh air was also an added bonus that we'd nearly forgotten about! Our hotel, the Royal National is HUGE and the corridors are just a maze! There's not much we can say about it except that it's in a good location and at least it's clean (if only just a step up from a hostel! haha). Finally after 17 hours in transit we checked in and got our keys then headed up to our room. It took some time just to get to our ... read more
