This city is HOT and all uphill but I have to admit it has a certain charm. Gaudi has some crazy buildings here too. I love Barcelona! When I signed up for this trip I really wasn't too excited about Spain, but I am soo happy I decided to go. Okay, so our first day in my sister and I walked down the street from the hotel to a small park down the street. We hiked up the side of a nature trail and looked down toward the city. Afterwards we went back to the hotel and hung out on the roof. My roommates, who had the keys, were gone so I hung out with Shan and some others on the roof. I did a few patterns and worked on downloading my pictures on my ... read more

We got up around 9am and scrambled to catch the bus at 10:18 to the train station. Everyone had a quick bite to eat and we made it. We bought our train tickets to Gent (11 euros roundtrip for Jonathan and I and the kids were free). We caught the 10:35 train and were on our way. We read a few chapters of Charlotte’s Web on our way and shared some fruit we had packed. The girls had a good time on the train and Eliza made friends with a little Belgian boy her age that shared his ball with her. We got off the train a little over an hour after we started our trip at St. Peter’s Station in Gent. We decided to save the kids legs and catch a tram to the ... read more

Press Release issued by me With the growing interest in locally produced foodstuffs, do you know how the food on your plate is produced? There was an opportunity to find out at Shotford Hall Farm near Harleston on Sunday 10th June, which opened their farm as part of a national event ‘Open Farm Sunday’. Hosting such an event for the first time, Tim Lewis, Tenant Farmer, had no idea whether to expect 30 or 300 visitors, and in the event had over 500 coming through the gates. Clearly finding the day enjoyable, many visitors stayed for several hours, with much to see: machinery could be climbed on, animals (calves, cows, sheep, chickens, and a bull) could be seen, egg-production was explained, information about crops grown (wheat, barley, sugar beet, maize, vining peas, oil seed rape and ... read more

We crossed the border from Turkey to Bulgaria on foot and in a cloud of mosquitos. Very exciting, despite having a blood sucker stuck to every bit of visible skin. The border guards were fairly surprised to see us weaving our way through the long line of articulated lorries but let us in anyway and all was well until we realised that we were all alone in Bulgaria in the dark without a map and nowhere near any kind of civilisation. Luckily the friendly border guard took pity on us and phoned a 'taxi' to take us to the nearest station. My main memories of the next 30 minutes are of Dee muttering increasingly frantic prayers under her breath as we richocheted round bulgarian country roads at warp speed, overtaking lorries on blind corners while our ... read more

Sunday 10th June - Moved away from the flat lands of the East towards the city of Maribor. The hills were welcome and the scenery much nicer - back to the small holdings and attractive villages. Had a trip through Austria and back into Slovenia via a very pretty, and highly manicured, walled town called Radkersberg. Must have some claim to fame with regard to the penny farthing as there is a sculpture of one and an inscription on a house regarding some penny farthing related event that took place there. By some miracle of navigation managed to get out of Maribor on the right road, and called in a the botanical gardens for a bottle of excellent apple juice and a kilo of cherries. Camp site at Radizel failed to materialize, but an excellent guest ... read more

Really do not like days like this !!!!!!!! For once not a gloomy start. Instead the day dawned misty and then became gloomy. The forecast was for brighter spells later so I packed the car and set-ff about 1030. The intention was to drive to a woodland car park and then set-off on a circuit on the bike. Arrived at the woodland to find it closed ! How do you close a woodland ? Obviously very easily …. Notices indicated that the authorities were trimming the conifers to make more light. Found another car park and waited for the sun to appear. Midday came and went with no sun so tucked into my sandwiches. Another hour passed so effectively giving up I drove to a nearby Nature Reserve, parked and had a brief wander - in ... read more

Hey everyone, Well Amsterdam is definitely an intersting place to visit. I (Ben) have been sick almost the entire time because of all of the pollution here in the city, its no good. The city is a mess, everything is filthy and the preservation of the canals and monuments is difficult to enjoy. Our hotel was hilarious. We had a room about 6 feet across and our shower had a toilet inside of it...yeah we were confused as well. We really didnt take many pictures here, sorry, we will take more to come. The city allows marijuana, which was interesting, as you can just walk into any coffee shops and order hasish, weed, joints, anything you want and smoke it freely in public or in coffee shops :-). I can see why the dutch allow smoking ... read more

My last day in Paris and I was off to the 4th place to stay out of my 6 nights in Paris! Avenir Hotel is the pick-up point for my first BusAbout leg to Amsterdam tomorrow, so I'd booked it a while ago to ensure I'd be there for the bus on time. Again, I was lucky the hotel was only 5 min away, so I didn't really lose too much time moving. In fact, all 4 hostels I stayed at were within 10 min walking distance of each other so I know the area of Montmarte pretty well now - well, at least from a backpacker's perspective! Knowing where the cheapest internet cafe, cheapest patisserie, a budget supermarket, and how to walk to the quickest Metro line, really saves a lot of time...and Euro's! That ... read more
