Day 4: It was the first day of class and the 3 hours at a time wasnt as bad as i thought it would be....Im in masters and monuments with just about all the girls ...it is really interesting and we go somewhere in the city everyday...today we went to a bunch of churches and cathedrals...I found a hotel that mom,dad and I can stay at when they visit. It is so good! i cannot get enough ... read more

Europe » Lithuania » Kaunas May 22nd 2008

Yesterday I was out at Kaunas Stadium mowing the grass. I really enjoy mowing grass. It gives me time to think, time to be with myself, it is this repetitive yet artistic activity. Back in North Carolina this is the way that I made spending money during the summers—I mowed lawns. I loved it. I remember the summer before my senior year in high school and first year in college I really got into mowing. It was a particularly wet summer, which meant that the grass was growing and so was the lawn-mowing business. I began with two lawns and by the end of the summer I had 15 or 16 different lawns I was taking care of. I was mowing them each almost every week. It was almost like a full-time job. I rode a natural high into Croatia. My whole life, i´d always been so excited to visit the land of my ancestors. I don´t know what it is about Croatia, but i´ve always felt more of a connection to it than my German or Irish roots. I was so excited getting off the train in Zagreb as i headed to the main town square. It was a Sunday afternoon and all the locals were out. There was old men performing on stage, all sorts of things being sold in an open market and culture all around. Jelacic´s statue in the center used to face the Hungarians, but was taken down and hidden during WWII for preservation purposes. Now he´s been reassembled and faces the Serbs. I took pictures of Jelacic´s statue ( a croatian hero who ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Volterra May 22nd 2008

Well, we seem to be the victims of climate change here in Tuscany. Apparently this is the wettest spring in memory. It has rained every day since we arrived - but there have also been moments (even hours on occasion) of sun. With the continuation of great coffee, the rolling hills of Tuscany, ancient villages, risotto funghi, etc etc etc one really can't complain about the weather. We had the usual disasterous arrival.....got here at 3pm by train on Saturday, car rental place closed at 1pm for the remainder of the weekend. It continues to be the case that all things in life can be solved with money....so we spent a ridiculous 60 Euros ( you would think they would have a Euro symbol on this damn keyboard) to get to our castle. Yes, that's right, ... read more

Europe » Greece » Crete » Knossos May 22nd 2008

We got up early to catch an early bus to Knossos. We caught the bus at Liberty Square (Plata Venizelou) at about 8am. It was a city bus, cost 1.15 Euros each, and became quite crowded. Knossos is right on the outskirts of Iraklio, so you don't realize you're there until the driver yells "Knossos". The entry fee was 6 Euros each. Knossos is quite extensive, fairly well excavated, and partially restored. The columns and frescoes were really cool! The crowds of mostly tours were annoying. There is a stone replica (?) of a bull's horns large enough to sit between the horns, but it is outside the ropes (barely). People tended to ignore the rope and sit there for a photo anyways. We could hear the staff lady blowing her whistle at them quite often ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome May 22nd 2008

Just spent my first full day in Rome, and despite all my fears to the contrary, I had a great time! SO much walking, but as long as I can stand up tomorrow, it was worth it. I was able to wash clothes last night, took a good 3 hours of my time but it did happen. One thing though—when people give directions in this city, it seems they always (ie the 3 times I’ve asked) underestimate the amount of time it takes to get from point A to point B by a great deal. I’d like to see anyone walk from Termini station to my hostel in the 10 minutes they promised. Heck, they can run for all I care, it wouldn’t happen. Ergo why washing took so long. But it’s okay, I had some ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Upper Carniola » Bled May 22nd 2008

Hi everyone, It's one day to go until Ben, Rolfe and Gareth set off on our little trip from Land's End to John O'Groats on our bicycles. We'll be using this site to let you know how we get on, to let you know about our joy, our pain, our adulation and our tears. And looking at the weather for the next couple of days, it looks as though it's mainly going to be tears. We're going to try to keep in touch every day and endeavour to upload photos as well as well as plotting our route. Wish us luck! Ben, Rolfe & Gareth... read more
