Europe » Monaco » Monte Carlo May 25th 2008

aka Contributing to the reputation of Aussies drinking overseas Was up at 4:30 to make the 5:00 train for Nice, kept falling asleep all the time until Ventimiglia, when had to get off for another train continuing in France. It was packed, everyone going to the Grand Prix... by the time everyone took 5 mins to pile out at Monte Carlo it had about twice as many people as it should have. I continued on to Nice, found the hostel and checked in, then back to the station and in the express lines to get a Monaco train. Got there about 12:30 with the intention on just wandering around and got hassled by scalpers wanting 100 euro for sector rocher tickets, which I knew was too much. Found out there was still official ones left so decided ... read more

Today Joonas came over around 12 and we went picnic shopping together, then he went home to grab some supplies, and I ate a special fish lunch with the family. At 1 Joonas drove Anette and I to Turku where we met Markus at the Lily on the river where he works, and sailed out to Vepsä island for the day! ... read more

Europe » Italy May 25th 2008

25 May 2008 Before saying goodbye to Levanto we visited one of the bars and had probably our last coffee and chocolate croissant in Italy. Then it was a final visit to the beach (we didn’t swim this time) and a stroll back to the campsite. We have really enjoyed our time staying in this small unpretentious town situated on a wonderfully scenic stretch of coast. We drove along the coastal motorway to Genoa and then continued northward and stopped the night at Pavia so we could visit the Certosa di Pavia one of the most extravagant monasteries in Europe. We joined a tour led by one of the monks and saw the highly decorated church, the refectory and the grand cloister surrounded by monks’ houses. Tomorrow we must stop finding beautiful things of interest to ... read more

We took the opportunity to sleep in a little, knowing that we had a long walk ahead today. Without a kitchenette, or utensils, we had limited choices for breakfast. Karina bought some milk and ate her cereal out of my New York Mets cup, while I opted for a rather plain, dry ham and cheese roll. Bleah! Next we stocked up on lunch - a few slices of pizza and some pesto focaccia, a couple of bananas, drinks and some chocolate - vital hiking supplies! We also quickly visited the souvenir shop before heading down to the station to Porto Venere. By the time we started out on the hike, around 1pm, Karina was hungry. The 1st part of the walk is a very steep climb past the fortress and beyond - you gain a lot ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Lincolnshire » Cleethorpes May 25th 2008

The great weather continued for another week. It is amazing! England in the spring sunshine can be a very colourful place. We were staying in Cleethorpes with Russ’ Mum and spent a lot of time outdoors which was a bonus. We are more used to cold drizzle and freezing winds whenever we go there!! Within the space of just five days we celebrated the birthdays of Russ, his older brother Rick (in Moscow to watch Man Utd!) and both of Russ’ grandmothers. It was nice to see everyone, and his Nan even had a party. Brewster Bear was on hand to entertain the great-grandchildren but, despite his help, we were exhausted by the end of the day! We also got to see Russ’ sister Rachael play with her band. Brother-in-law Paul was also there. The evening ... read more

Luckily, I could sleep a bit this morning because my first train wasn't until 9:33 am. I got up at 8:30, took a quick shower and was on my way. Walking to the train station I ran into someone I knew! What are the odds?!? Especially since at 9 am this city is still asleep. It was Basel, who we'd last left in Perth. I stopped for a second to say hi and meet his friend Wendy and was on my way. The train ride to Glasgow was a strange one. There were a lot of older, louder people on it and I was just irritated. When I walked into the coach the place got quiet. Strange, maybe their not used to seeing young people. I had no choice to where I sat though because this ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin May 25th 2008

Just a quick stop over in Berlin to pick up Margo and to see Kit Belgum and Michael Herring for dinner. Yes, it is a bit of a detour off the road from Budapest to Krakow, but definitely worth the trip. I got to show a friend a bit of a city I love, see two friends for dinner and catch up on something I missed. What could be a better 2 days than that? Saturday, May 24th: Easy train ride to Prague, though there was a bit of confusion at the very end, and I had to make sure I was at Hlavni Nadrazi (Main Station in Czech) and not one of the satellite stations - I would joke about this, but Bethany and I did this 3 years ago in this same city - ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice May 25th 2008

People call Venice the most romantic city in the world, and I can completely understand why, even though I spent the weekend there solo or with a girl pal. The tiny little streets where two people can hardly pass by, with balconies overflowing with bright coloured geraniums, with romantic little windows with wooden shutters, around every corner is a small bridge over a canal filled with gondolas... It's all very pretty and very romantic. I don't know why everyone always complains about the smell - it was 30'c+ for all the three days i was there, and there was no bad smell whatsoever. The only noticable smell is that of the ocean. It was great. Especially in San Marco piazza, which is very pretty, and it opens straight onto the sea. The Church of San Marco ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome May 25th 2008

Rome wasn't built in a day, but we almost saw it in one. I don't recommend doing it like that, but if you're curious, here's how we ruined Rome for ourselves. We arrived after a pretty long "high speed" train ride. It was also somewhat uncomfortable train ride because the tables in our high speed train that separate the rows of seats which face each other were built for people without any knees. I don't know why, but the bottom of the table is about level with the top of the seat, so I'm not sure how one would contort themselves into a good seating position, but none of myself, nor Neil, nor Amy ever really figured it out. Amy came the closest by taking off her shoes and sitting sideways curled up in the seat. ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini May 25th 2008

We are happy to report that after two days we can now sit and stand without pain. We are in beautiful Santorini now. It is an amazing island with so many wonderful views. The trip here was not so wonderful however. The travel agent booked us on a high speed ferry from Crete to Santorini which took 2 hours instead of the normal 4. She did not mention that it would feel like being on an amusement park ride. The ferry took off from the port and the ride was smooth till they picked up speed. The water started coming over the windows of the boat and we started slamming into the waves. People in the boat started gasping as we went up and down over the waves. We were not expecting this from the ferry ... read more
