My mom and I are traveling to Greece for three weeks. First stop Athens, then onto Rhodes, Crete and finally Santorini.

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini May 28th 2008

We are still in Santorini but have moved to Kamari Beach. Our hotel is wonderful and seems very fancy when compared to some of our other places. We planned it this way and it has worked out well. The hotel has a swimming pool and the beach is 10 steps away. There is a great breakfast every morning. Jessica is in 7th heaven as they have yogurt, honey and fruit. Greek yogurt is very different but tasty. It is very quite here and we are just lazing around before we head home. We met some girls from Calgary and one turned out to have been Jessica's union rep from IGA. Yesterday we went to a Wine museum and tasting. Santorini is known for the wine that is produced here. The wine was not our style, but ... read more

We are happy to report that after two days we can now sit and stand without pain. We are in beautiful Santorini now. It is an amazing island with so many wonderful views. The trip here was not so wonderful however. The travel agent booked us on a high speed ferry from Crete to Santorini which took 2 hours instead of the normal 4. She did not mention that it would feel like being on an amusement park ride. The ferry took off from the port and the ride was smooth till they picked up speed. The water started coming over the windows of the boat and we started slamming into the waves. People in the boat started gasping as we went up and down over the waves. We were not expecting this from the ferry ... read more

Europe » Greece » Crete » Chania May 23rd 2008

We have been busy the last few days. On Wednesday we went to the Palace of Knossos. This is an ancient minoan palace. It has been reconstructed in parts by Sir Arthur Evans, an archeologist. It was very difficult to visualize what the palace looked like all those years ago. Many original items that were found at Knossos have been placed in the National Archeological Museum. Many columns and walls were reconstructed according to what Arthur Evans thought the original purpose was. It is hard to be a tourist in Greece as they do not have as many maps/signs/markers as we do in North America at tourist sites. You have to depend on your guide books or spend extra money to have a guide show you around. It was nice to see but not as impressive ... read more

Europe » Greece » Crete » Heraklion May 20th 2008

Today we rented a car because Crete is kind of hard to navigate by bus. We drove about 45 minutes to Agios Nikolas, a harbour city. The highways are quite nice here with plenty of signs. We found out the lines on the roads are just a suggestion. People pass you at any time no matter who is coming in the other lane. The drivers expect you to merge over to the shoulder so they can pass. At Agios we took a boat trip to the island of Spinalonga. This was a leprocy colony during the 1900's. The last person left in 1958. Before that it was a venitian fortress. Then the turkish people took over. The island itself is very small. It took only 20 minutes to walk around the whole island. At one time ... read more

Nothing much to report today. We had a minor disaster last night. We arrived at the airport at 20:30 for our 23:30 flight to Crete. I could not find our flight on the board. When I finally found someone to ask, we were informed the flight left at 19:30!!! I had checked the airlines web site earlier in the day and the flight was still on schedule. We called the travel agent we booked the ticket with and they stated they had been looking for us for 2 days. This would have been an impossible task as there must be 3000 hotel and apts in Rhodes. Their advice for us was to book another flight out of Rhodes and try to get a refund from the missed flight. Luckily there was an Olympic flight leaving at ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Rhodes May 18th 2008

Rhodes was definately a little different than I expected. In Athens we were two tourists surrounded by Athenians, in Rhodes we were two Canadian tourists surrounded by tons of German and British tourists. I was expecting this island to be less touristy than Athens but it is actually more so. We have been busy since we last wrote. On Friday we explored the Old Town of Rhodes. The town is surrounded by medieval fortress walls that are still pretty intact. The center of town contains the Palace of the Grand Masters, the clock tower, bridges, many gates (entrances to the town), and many narrow cobblestone alleyways. It was fun to walk around the old town and picture what it was like to live there all those years ago. The most interesting part is that people still ... read more

We arrived in Rhodes yesterday, luckily with all our baggage too! It is pretty nice weather here, around 20 but the wind is very strong and cold, especially by the ocean. We are staying in a village on the western side of Rhodes called Kremasti. Our hotel is very nice, we have a kitchenette with hot plates, fridge and sink. We also have a balcony, it is much larger than our last hotel room. Today, we walked down to the beach and rented chairs from a charming greek man, he was busy fixing up his beach cafe for the 'real' busy tourist season. We did manage to get some sun although it was very windy, I think I may be quite burnt tomorrow. We tried to go in the water but it was very cold and ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens May 13th 2008

We started the day out by having a roaming breakfast. We went to the Coffee Right to get a cup of coffee, kind of like Tim Horton's. The cheapest place to get coffee. Filtered coffee is1.60E for a small cup. We then went to this great bakery around our hotel and had a muffin (I don't know what kind). We also stopped at the grocery store and got 2 bananas. There are so many bakeries here it is amazing. One or two on every street. The National Historical Museum was next on the list. It was interesting but there are only so many statues, clay potts, and busts you can see. Jessica saw a few items she had studied in one of her classes. We then had the bright idea to go down the coast to ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens May 13th 2008

On Monday, we went to the Acropolis. This area is composed of many different ruins such as the Parthenon and the Theatre of Epidavros. You can see shows in this theatre but we were too early in the season. All of the ruins are being rebuilt which is kind of a let-down. Scoffolding is all over the buildings. The Greek government is repairing and replacing areas that have crumbled. We then travelled back down the hill which took us back to the flea market. We had lunch at an outside taverna (cucumber/tomatoe salad and toasted ham and cheese sandwiches (a staple on all greek menus). That evening we walked up to a section of Athens where some of the foreign embassies are located. After walking up 7 blocks of continual stairs, we reached the tram to ... read more

First full day in Greece and it was busy. We went to the Monastiraki Market where you can get anything from furniture to fruit. Too bad we couldn't bring back a couple of antique tables! We did find a 'few' things to buy. We went to the poet sandal maker. He is famous for his greek sandals and had a story written about him in the Calgary Herald which he has posted in his window. The store is about 30 sq feet with sandals hanging all over the place. You decide which ones you want and then they size the sandal for your foot. E23.00! Pasmini scarfs are also everywhere and very cheap. We are getting around on the Metro train. A high speed, improved version of the C-Train. The train stations are underground with ... read more
