After 5 years of living in London my wife, Lisa, and I have finally decided to get away from it all and travel. We have resigned from our jobs and have the flat up for rent. This will be our first experience of backpacking but we are both very excited. We intend spending 7 months travelling to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and the Philippines before heading home to South Africa for close on two months. I stumbled upon the travelblog.org when doing a Google search on Ko Tao and have been hooked ever since. We will be flying from London Heathrow on 15th August and touching down in sticky Bangkok some 13 hours later. We are reasonably prepared without having gone into too much detail with the itinary. Apart from potentially booking our ... read more

OMG!!!... 5 weeks and counting - argh - scary... but also so exciting! Well, you are the lucky chosen few to be receiving my first ever, fine, poetic and profound 'travel blog',...(really just wanted to see if it worked!) This thrilling little entry comes from my cosy room in Oak House, Fallowfield, Manchester,… not going to bore you with my travels around Manchester on the local transport (go UK North!), or the people and cultures (!). However, I hope to be able to entertain you regularly with plenty more exciting adventures as I make my way around the world over the coming year. OMG…. Am soooooooooooooo excited!!!... read more

Noon Saw the tail-end of the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. I actually got into it and found it very cool to see our Monarch's residence. But these guards look so much like toy soldiers I don't know how anyone could take them seriously. As John reminded me, we have toy soldier Christmas tree ornaments and if they're hangimg on our tree then I don't see how they can adequately protect the Queen! It is amazing how controlled their movements are. Amazing - but what a boring job. We saw them stand, walk a few steps, stand and then walk a few more back to the little huts they stand in. There must be different ranks of guards b/c the lower ones had to pick up the music stands after the marching band left. ... read more

Greetings: So, Michael and I have left the land of haggis and men in kilts for the land of tea and crumpets (and recently, bombs!!). Things seem relatively normal here, given the chaos a few days ago. However, the one big pain (minor compared to the suffering of people, trust me, I know) is that some of the underground lines are not operating, which makes getting around hectic and puts many more cars on the road. We didn't get to the hotel (yes, hotel, NOT hostel) until about 3:30. We then wandered to the British Museum (great place - cousins Brent and Julie would love it), and then on to Trafalgar Square. We then wandered some more, got some food, and are now relaxing in the hotel. Tomorrow we are thinking about going to Buckingham Palace ... read more

Tonight we are catching a night bus (9 hours) to Edinburgh since my paper is done for the women's studies/history class, and we are going to see the British Open on Thursday, before taking a day bus back all day Friday to catch the Harry Potter book release Queue Party on Friday night in central London and go home on Saturday. So I might not be updating this again until I'm back home, although the hostel we are staying at in Edinburgh should have internet access - if its anything like the one in Dover (£5 an hour) we won't be using the internet much.... read more

Hi guys well after the events of last week you cant really say too much except that thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the attacks. Its a bit scary to think that they happened only 2 hours up the road from us and not the other side of the world if we were still in New Zealand. And even scarier when you have friends who are a lot closer than us but luckily are all ok. We were on a train which was heading to London but we were getting off at Bournemouth, the lady on the intercom was saying that 'after a few incidents on the underground and bus services the police are advising that people dont travel to London' she was saying this with big pauses and sounded frightened. I texted Cerian ... read more

So far we're just getting acquainted with the idiosyncracies of being oversees. I almost blew up my hair dryer this morning trying to sort out the voltage adapters (nothing like have smoke blow out of the motor to wake you up)! Then we had our first introduction of paying to go to the bathroom when we arrived at Waterloo Station to start our day of touring the sights. Rode the double decker bus and saw all the notable landmarks en route. Big Ben is our fave! This is not just any clock - it's gorgeous. There is so much history here its amazing! Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Westminster Cathedral, Picadilly Circus, Scotland Yard just to name a few. BUT the highlight so far was at The Olde Kings Head pub where I had bangers and mash ... read more

Well, we have survived this year's T in the Park (just). Brilliant weekend, ace weather, top bands, funky vibes, ice cold cider, hell of a hangover. There were 70,000 people at this year's event - about 10,000 more than previous, and the site was laid out completely different than before. There were a couple of teething problems on the first day, in that the site gates did not open till 12:10 (ten mins late) but that was enough to create a queue backlog of an hour and a half. The waiting crowd were fairly relaxed, but the day was so hot that it meant as soon as folk got inside the venue they headed straight for the beer token stalls / bars (more hanging around - not good). As you can imagine, the next thing was ... read more

Our 3-day Isle of Skye tour was amazing! We had a great drive up there - sunny all the way so you could see the Highlands well and get some great pictures. Our tour guide/bus driver, Duncan, was quite a character. He should really be an actor (perhaps a new recruit for the Robin in the Hood Festival?). We made a number of stops on the drive up to relax, eat and take pictures. We stayed in the small village of Kylaken (spelling is probably wrong). The following day we went out and about on the island. We went to the town of Portree where, coincidently, there was a bagpipe festival! What are the chances of being in Scotland and actually getting to see a piping festival? We could only watch for about 30 minutes before ... read more

Hello once again, I am back! It has been a long bit of travelling and a lot of fun. I would love to tell you everying but too bad! Ha, you will have to ask me. You may be wondering what type of journal doesn't have anything in it and your right, I should tell you a couple of things to keep the hordes of people away from me with pitch forks demanding more, more. Right. Lets start of with Edingburg. I met my sister at the airport and dragged her around town, trying to keep her awake. That night we ended up doing the merchant ghost tour which was very neat. We were taken under the city into the vaults which were rather interesting. The guide was good and it was great fun. The next ... read more
