Having been an international traveller since the year dot, I started to put together a travel diary as of the summer of 2005, just after I had purchased my first ever digital camera. It all seemed so fitting, and timely then, that the first entry to this travel diary was London, my home nation's capital city, where I had arranged to meet a friend and show her around two major European capital cities. The travel diary continues to this very day, and I am keeping it separate in content and style from this blog, which I intend be less formal in style, and more of a reflection of my emotions at the time of visiting each place en route. Most of the travel diary entries represent first and only visits to the place in question, therefore, ... read more

With the arrival in the UK of “Crazy A”, Sal’s mum Ann, the new trio of “the A”, Sal and Mick decided that it was an apt time to visit and explore Scotland, where Sal’s dad Ian was born and raised. We woke on the morning of July the 7th to some horrible news: London had been the target of four coordinated terrorist bombings. As the day unfolded, the full extent of the horror that had taken place became apparent to us. However, being the intrepid travellers that we are, we decided that not even terrorists nor anarchists/anti-globalists/people who don’t wash very often (the Gleneagles summit was on in Scotland at the same moment) would prevent us from experiencing the world. We headed up the M1 and crossed the border at the famous Gretna Green, synonymous ... read more

It was around 9am on 7 July when I made my way to City Hall, near Tower Bridge in the heart of London, where Mayor Ken Livingstone has his office, for a work 'away-day'. I was feeling very proud of myself that I had managed to find my way via public transport and map to a place I had never been, in a city where I had only lived for 6 weeks. I was excited about the day ahead. All the communications staff at my new work place, the London Borough of Lewisham were there and I was looking forward to a day of interesting speakers and getting to know my colleagues better. The morning had been quite a stressful one for me, frantically making phone calls and trying to work out how I was going ... read more

Due to circumstances, the cat's out of the bag. Nick and I were originally headed to Pamplona, Spain for the annual San Fermin Festival, and ultimately the running of the bulls - which has been a dream of mine since I was old enough to know about it. I even re-read The Sun Also Rises, by Hemingway, in preparation and as a means to subside my uncontainable excitement. Needless to say, the trip has been a distraction since we'd decided to first make it back in April and was something we had been anticipating to be the highlight of our study abroad experience in general. But fate wasn't on our side. If the trip from Kansas City to Shannon was a nightmare, then the trip from Shannon to Spain was a very slow, very painful sodomizing ... read more

but our luck could have been much worse. A few quick words: My travel buddy, Dan Calderon, has started his own travel blog on travelblog.org… his can be found here. In case you couldn’t get enough info and pictures… there’s now more. As for our trip to Pamplona, Spain to run with the bulls?? In short… it didn’t happen… but we ARE lucky to be alive (see my parting words in my July 5 post). Dan and I were riding the London subway system at the exact moment it was bombed on Thursday, July 6. In fact, we just a few interchange stations away from the blast at Edgware Road station. Here’s a brief recap leading up to that point: Dan and I flew in to London’s Gatwick airport just after 10:00 PM…. I lost my ... read more

Well as everyone would know by now, London was not the place to be in today. We arrived in London at 7am at Heathrow. Due to delays in Bangkok and long lines in customs we were late getting out of Heathrow, which turned out to be a blessing. We arrived at the tube station at about 8.45am to buy our tickets for the Piccidily line to central London. We had to wait for a while and suddenly the station was closed down. At the time we were told that a power failure had stopped all all the underground. We thought that if we waited a while it might start up again, but as news spread it soon became clear the tube stations were not going to open up again and we would need to make other ... read more

Fortunately for us, no one was hurt in any of the attacks that happened, and we were no where near central London at the time. We had left at 8 am for a tour of a Rolls-Royce jet engine assembley plant in Derby (3 hours away), and we heard off and on accounts of what was going on in London over the radio, from there being a train collision near Aldgate, possibly due to signal failure, to there being 4 bombings to even 7 seperate incidents, including a bus explosion, even though we now know that there were only 4. There is a slight chance that we could be sent home early since there is a slight threat that still prevails, and that American tourists could be even more of a target, and since it is ... read more

Classes couldn't go by quickly enough today. My mind has been distracted all week, and indeed all of the last three months by a weekend excursion I'll be leaving for in an hour. In a lot of ways I've been waiting a lifetime to take this very trip. My bag is packed. All my information is set. I'm not checking any bags this time (thank Christ). I won't be able to make any additions to this travel blog over the weekend, so monday will be a big post, with plenty of retrospective entries. For those of you who don't know where I'm going, I won't spoil the fun. Tune in on monday. But as far as the trip is concerned, I'm beyond excitement. I've been waiting to do this for a long, long time, and it's ... read more
