I left a very soggy Venice behind today having caught my last flight with Ryanair back to London. It was very pleasing to see the sun shining again here in England even if the temperature was a little cool. Tomorrow morning I'm on Gulf Air back to Sydney. The two months I have been away seem to have just flown by without notice and although I have many great memories, they seem but a flash in time now. Today has been a very long day, its still only 5pm in London but I have been awake for 12 energy-sapping hours which included some time (once again) getting lost. I did fear that an early morning walk (before dawn) could be my undoing in Venice and it nearly was. I'm just glad I factored in some 'lost' ... read more

Just missed out on another Saturday night, thanks to the Rabies vaccine. It was to be a party full of frenchies too, and the flat got to go except for me. Bleeuurrgh. It's about 11.30 and I shouldn't be here until 1.00. I swear I'm due a bit of good karma. Yesterday, while the others slept it off, I went up to Spitalfields (or what's left of it), and then wandered up Brick Lane. I was aiming for a vintage shop I've been meaning to look at, but it was closed. Typical. That's how it goes in this town. Afternoon was better. Jim took me out for Tapas, somehow the flat ended up watching 4 hours of South Park, we spent a bit of time being very mean about the people coming to look at Rémy's ... read more

Off to class I went this morning about 9:30am to the Law & Soc Sci building for Contemporary World since 1945. The room was very interesting. It had rows of chairs that folded up but shared a table, kind of like a law room. No slouching here! Our convenors introduced what this module was going to be about and handed out a 30 page syllabus with 6 pages devoted to a reading list. Yikes! And no particular text book for the course. Plus, they don't expect us to attend every lecture but only the ones that we'd like to learn more about. However, we must attend all our seminars. Craziness....I attend everything but I've never actually been told that I don't have to come to class by any professor. Tomorrow I have class at 11 or ... read more

Here is my first travelling blog, which I'm not sure what to make of. Not very exciting yet as I'm still at home in good olde west country but we will be adding loads of highly profound musings and breathtaking photography whilst we find ourselves. I think I'm hiding under the sink. Still got lots to do and lots to pack. 1st stop Quito. Hazar!!!! Our excellently devised plan and no doubt not quite so well executed is this: South America (Equador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina and Easter Island until xmas eve (have no Christmas day as crossing over the date line). Then in 2006 New Zealand, Australia. Then South East Asia (Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Bali). All sounds so easy. IF ANYONE HAS ANY USEFUL TIPS, THINGS TO SEE/DO OR PEOPLE FOR US TO ... read more

I got back from my planned Study Abroad Program family stay. I stayed with a host family, an older retired couple and their 5-year-old great-grandson, in Woking England. It was a good time and a great break from my dorm and a great chance to eat food that is not peanut butter (or what England claims as PB) and jelly sandwiches. We went to Windsor Castle, which was huge and to yet another cheap market, which was great! Don’t worry Dad, I didn’t buy anything! In the manor of Windsor Castle is St. George’s Chapel. St. George’s is so beautiful and rich with tombs of former leaders of England. Henry VIII and one of his wives, Jane Seymour (the one he actually did ‘love’), and one of his infants by Queen Anne is buried there along ... read more

Is it just me, or should bus drivers not heckle the passengers? Just this afternoon, as I'm taking the bus here to the library, this happened: I tried to catch the bus and was about 6 steps too late to actually flag the driver down so I could board. Luckily another bus running the same route was about 45 seconds away and was approaching. (They aren't supposed to follow each other so closely, but in this instance I was glad they were...most of the time, I'm just missing the second bus and have to wait absolutely forever for the next bus.) I step onboard, with my bus pass out to show the driver and he asks me what the sign on the previous bus said. Now, with a bit of incredulity, I respond, "Pardon?" because I ... read more

Fiona and I vacated the flat on Friday. We then met up with James in Sheffield to get our brief introduction to the North of England. I visited York a few years ago, staying with a host family for Christmas in 2001, but I have yet to have a proper visit to other cities in Yorkshire. We took a day trip to Bradford and saw the university sites from where James attended undegrad. We walked around the city and took in the sites which included old textile mills, mosques, and delectable Asian sweet shops. As you would expect in Bradford, we stopped for curry. We also viewed a film at the Imax Cinema on ancient Egypt. We popped over to Leeds, a city which boasts a massive university and a robust banking industry. On Sunday we ... read more

Right, well this will be the last time (for a while) that I'll be able to post photos on my blog as my camera got stolen last night at the Em Dee gig. shmeh. Shit happens. HOWEVER, the gig was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! Although it may be hard to imagine, I danced harder than I ever have before (had a dance-off with Lukas too- he seems to have just as much energy as I do!) I also saw and said g'day to the Panda Band- a band from Perth who know a mate of mine, Jeff Strong- and I told them to say g'day to him as I drank my Little Creatures Pale Ale. :) I tell you what! It was the most Australian night I've had in ages! And I loved it! :) That was because ... read more
