So, once again I headed off to track practice. I arrived a little early because at least this time I knew where I was going. Arriving early is almost as bad as arriving late. It seems that no one gets to things early here - ever. Which is a problem for me since I like to be at places about 10 to 15 minutes ahead of time. Anyway, everyone else showed up, and we did our warm-up laps. Then we did this thing, I guess it was part of the warm-up, where you just kind of jog around on the high jump area and then when the coach calls out a number you do either 2 push-ups or two sit-ups - they called push-ups, lift-ups or something like that. Then we hopped around which really made ... read more

Today I attended my first ever battle and got to be scum. Yes, scum. Scum is the lowest soldier who has no armor but a helmet and carries a 9 foot spear. It was great. We started out with some sparing in pairs. I attempted to learn how to fight with a spear. You are not supposed to hit people, in mock battles and reenactment anyway, in the feet, ankles, shins, knees, hands, forearms, or head. Basically you aim for the thighs, upper arms, and stomach. This was difficult since we were supposed to hold the spear angled at about 45 degrees to the ground, our right (back) hand up above our shoulder and on top of the spear and the left (front) hand lower and either on top or bottom of the spear. Also, we ... read more

So, about three weekends ago Kia and I went to visit the Nottingham Castle and I realized that I hadn't written about it or posted my pictures. First we went to Ye Old Trip to Jerusalem, the oldest inn in England, established 1189, for lunch. Ye Old Trip sits just below the castle, and has wonderful pasta and chips. After lunch we went over to the Robin Hood statue that also sits outside the castle walls in front of reliefs showing scenes from the life of Robin Hood. The castle itself is a relatively new castle. It was on the grounds of the castle that Charles II declared war against Parliament, so with one thing and another, the original castle was destroyed. The castle is now a museum and art gallery. At the moment they also ... read more

Today I was able to go to track practice for the first time. Practice doesn't start until 6:30 but since campus is so spread out, there is no track at University Park. So, first I had to find and catch the 35 bus at 5:45. The 35 stop is not on campus but outside the Sports Center. Luckily for me, another member of the club was there so she told me what stop we had to get off at. 20 minutes later we arrived at the track, and then I had to find the group that I needed to be with, aka the 400 runners. The practice totally killed me. Let me say, for the record, that the last actual practice session that I attended was in May and the last time I ran was the ... read more

As some of you may know, one of our responsibilities here is to cook a meal every week, or sometimes every other week, for the group. This means cooking for twelve people. In our dining room there are two big tables that have been put together to form one table for twelve, which also doubles as a classroom setting when we have lecturers for our Paideia Capstone course. Anyway, cooking for twelve people, is a daunting task. First of all, most recipes are not set up to feed twelve people, so one must double or triple the recipe before even beginning to cook. Then there is the converting. In England, everything is sold in grams and liters instead of pounds and ounces. This makes the cooking more complicated as you try to figure out how many ... read more

'Ello there! So this weekend consisted of all around amazingness begining with our flat trip to London. We left our flat around 6:20 on Saturday morning and made it to the train station by 7. We made it to London by 9:30 and began our London experience by waiting in line for discount tickets for musicals. I even got a ticket for Cabaret! But more about that later. Saturday as a group we went to the British Museum. The museum is huge and filled with extremely interesting artifacts. We saw intricate Roman jewelry, pottery, statues, and we even got to view the bog man! After the museum several of us went to Buckingham Palace. I had fun seeing how large the palace was and watching all the people going by. Oh but the best part of ... read more

Yesterday marked the beginning of the Goose Fair which has been running in Nottingham for at least 700 years. Tonight we visited Goose Fair which no longer has geese or any other livestock. Now the fair is a maze of carnival rides and games and tons of fair food. We went on the Giant Ferris Wheel, which was cool because the view was amazing, but I really do not like heights. The highlight of the evening was when Storm convinced Kia to go on the largest reverse bungee in the UK. It was pretty amazing. Storm looked like a kid at Christmas while Kia's face face showed mixed exhilaration and slight terror. We also indulged in some candy floss and then grabbed the tram back to the flat. You may be wondering why Post Office is ... read more

School has finally started. A month after school has started back at Luther, I finally attended my first classes. Classes, or modules as they call them, are very different from classes I have taken before. For the most part the convener lectures and we as students listen and do not contribute to the conversation. The only time that hands have been raised is to ask a question and then the lecturing resumes. Time in class is also relatively short. I am in a classroom a total of 7 hours a week. The rest of the time is spent, or supposed to be spent, reading the insane amount of books that are on our reading lists. However, I think that all of my classes will be interesting. My Soil Science class meets once a week for 3 ... read more

Well hope you all are doing swell! This weekend was full of meeting native Nottinghamers. Saturday I went with Katie to have dinner with a local family. Their names were Mavis and Keith and they were a lovely retired couple. We arrived at their Bungalow around four and didnt end up leaving til around eight! But I must say I really enjoyed myself. Its like having another set of grandparents. They told us all about their kids and their grandkids, where they have traveled in the U.S. and how much they love visiting Decorah. We sat for about two hours enjoying tea and stories before we even had dinner. And the dinner was a nice treat to have especially since we have to fend for ourselves on weekends and we seriously were down to limited supplies. ... read more

So even though registration produced some unhappy times I have quite enjoyed this week. Kia and I have discovered the wonderfullness of the local green grocer. We wondered in to the store and were immediately greeted by the owners. These ladies were very pleasant and even provided us with a free piece of fruit of our choice.Thursday we ventured over to our directors house to attempt some apple picking. Now these trees didnt have any limbs close to the ground so in order to get to some of the apples higher up I climbed up a ladder and then found a small lump to place my foot on. Holding a hoe (make shift apple picker) in my left hand and holding on to the tree for dear life with my right hand our apple pickings ... read more
