Tonight we went to the pantomime in town. Pantomime is a Christmas tradition in England that has its roots in Italian Commedia dell' Arte and the medieval morality plays. Called Panto, for short, the story is usually a fairy tale - Cinderella, Snow White, Jack and the Beanstalk, Aladdin, and Dick Whittington are traditional ones. We saw Dick Whittington who was an actual historical figure. He was Lord Mayor of London 3 times. Before we went to go see the Panto, Kate Juggins, a friend of the program, came over on Tuesday to explain a bit about Panto to us. Even so, I was not fully prepared for the actuality of it. When we got to the theater we were given 3-D glasses, which we played with like we were about 5 years old. The ... read more

Although Nottingham has been decked out for Christmas for the last month, we just put our tree and decorations up on Tuesday. We found we had an abundance of decorations in the storage closet in the bathroom and spent a good hour and a half listening to various Christmas music, eating chocolate, and decorating. We now have one large Christmas tree in the living room and one in the hallway. We also have two small Christmas trees, one very Charlie Brown like, in the living room and one in the kitchen. While decorating we also found reindeer antlers, a Santa hat, and angel wings. These were combined with various decorations as costumes. I spent a chunk of time untangling star garland and ended up just taking a scissors to the knot and making one long strand ... read more

After nearly a month, due to weather and bad schedules, we had battle practice today. It was a little chilly walking to campus but as soon as we started practicing I was warm enough. Today I learned a new way to hold a spear and was pitted against Sir Drogo, who gave me a lot of helpful pointers. However, I feel that I am just not aggressive enough because I am afraid I will hurt someone. I probably would have died in a real battle. Anyway we did a lot of pair work today so my bruise collection is starting again, but the best thing was that I got to learn how to use a short sword and ax. Both of these are used just with one hand and the basic defense and attack moves are ... read more

Because of limited kitchen and oven space and the fact that we still had to attend class, we had made up an oven schedule which stretched over Wednesday and Thursday. Carrie and I started early because Carrie also had to cook dinner Wednesday night. So on Tuesday night, we gutted, chopped up, and baked a pumpkin in preparation for making pumpkin pie - which neither of us had ever done before- the next day. After class on Wednesday morning, we started mixing up pie crust. We don't have a pastry cutter in the flat so to cut in the shortening we used forks. After mixing the crust we walked to the green grocers and picked up 24 apples, three things of raspberries, and one of strawberries. Before dinner we finished making the berry pie, and after ... read more

Thanksgiving in England. We started discussing this on the coach ride to Bath approximately two weeks before Thanksgiving. A little late to start maybe but then we work well under pressure. We wrote out a guess list that included speakers and friends of the program and then began to discuss whether we could or wanted to bring friends or not. The major stuff - finding out if we could use the church hall and what had been done in previous years - we left up to Storm. For the time being, we left the plans alone because we were on a coach and couldn't do much else. At dinner last Tuesday, things started to come together. Siri - the president of the flat - ran the meeting and we solidified our guest list, deciding that friends ... read more

So Monday was Guy Fawkes Day. The city had an official bonfire and fireworks a few tram stops away in the Forest so after dinner we headed down. Now, fireworks laws in this country are much different from at home. Almost anyone can buy fireworks and shoot them off wherever they want, which usually means their yards. And I am not talking about the little fireworks, I am talking full-fledged fireworks. And they do not only shoot them off on Guy Fawkes Day. We saw fireworks for a straight week. There was one night when we could watch two fireworks shows, one from our living room and one from the kitchen. On Monday the people across the street were shooting off their batch and they were almost right over our flat. We were a little worried ... read more

"Robin Hood and Little John a running through the forest" I know this happens to be a line from a Disney movie but as soon I as stepped into Sherwood Forest that is the first thing that came to my mind. Not only was it the first thing in my head but I could not stop singing that song the whole time we were there. So our adventure began today with Alex, Carrie, Erin, Kate, Kia, Joy and I traveling on a bus that took almost an hour to arrive at our destination. I know many of you probably know this by now but long time on buses equals sleepiness for me. However, I decided that for once the bus was not a place for napping. I actually enjoyed the bus ride because Alex and I ... read more

Battle practice, which I have decided to regard as weight training (since sports center membership is super expensive), started out with safety today. We were first tested by Sir Bodric on the no-hit zones. Then we armed up and warmed up in pairs with some sparing. I managed to get a few hits in today which is an improvement on last week. I was also given a little more instruction on how to fight and defend myself with a spear, which was good. Then we had safety testing with weapons. Against someone with a sword and shield, we had to get three legal, safe hits in. Having a sword coming at you is slightly terrifying, especially when the guy is yelling at the same time. That will take some getting used to. It took me a ... read more

Sunday October 14, 2007 I didn't think that I could find a sport I enjoyed as much as hockey. But until now I have never watched an entire rugby game. On the 13th, the semi-finals for the world cup were on: England vs. France. England was down for almost the whole game until the last 10 minutes - it was 8 to 9 and England scored twice making the final score 14 to 9. They wear no pads, like in American Football, and it seems like someone is hurt or injured about every 2 minutes. Unlike American Football, you can only make backward passes and if you get tackled the ball isn't down but you have to release it and someone else on your team, or sometimes the other team, picks it up and can run ... read more

Today, Kia and I attended the Robin Hood Pageant today at the Nottingham Castle. The pageant is a living history festival complete with homemade crafts, puppet shows, music, jousting, fighting, and falconry. Kia and I wandered around and watched one guy making a bowl, looked at spices, watched a shoemaker, and looked at the goods that were for sale. Kia held a falcon which in her own words was "really awesome". I shot 8 arrows and over half of them hit the target, not necessarily near the circle but they did hit the target. The key, I guess is to keep your hand that is holding the bow relaxed and draw your thumb of the opposite hand back to rest on your jaw bone. I only hit my arm with the bowstring twice which is probably ... read more
