“The Terminal”- If you haven’t seen the movie, don’t bother just listen to our story and it’s pretty much the same thing! Except he was there almost a year and Catherine zeta Jones is a stewardess. -Left Apartment 10:30 Sunday morning - Took bus -Arrived at train station in Florence at about 11:00 -Desperately looked for trains going to Pisa, lost cause, super cold and too many people to actually ask any questions. After giving up we just jumped on a random train hoping it would bring us to Pisa (home of the Yellow Bean Sandwich*this might not be a fact*) -On train by 12:00 -Arrived in Pisa at about 1:30 -Ate a yellow Bean Sandwich -Made our way back to Train Station to catch a train to the Airport, met a lovely family with two ... read more

First big decision before I leave in 2 weeks...what lego figure to get to go with 'the stig' to india? They will be hogging the camera space for many of the photos out there, and can't wait for a shot next to the taj mahal and a camel! I'm thinking maybe yoda, or where's wally, or indiana jones?...... read more

Gibraltar to Cairo The Long Way Round As I am now less than a week from the beginning of what is one of the ultimate overland trips, I thought it was about time I looked into setting up some form of travelblog, so people can track me across Africa. I am not promising the beginnings of a best seller or anything to the high standards set by Ray or Michelle. So almost 8 years since the end of my last overland trip, the current state of the economy has finally given me the push into beginning another one. This time at least there is a bit more of an itinerary, last time all I had when I set off was a start point of Singapore and a finish point of Bolton. A week today I ... read more

"I travelled among unknown men, In lands beyond the sea; Nor, England! did I know till then, what love I bore to thee..." - William Wordsworth Shires of Lincoln: There is no place quite like home... I have spent most of my life in a land where any undulation over 100ft is considered mountainous and where the landscape is strewn with muddy fields and drainage streams. Sheep, cows, and corn barns, are liberally scattered across a fenland topography which is so flat, I once watched my wild Terrier dog run off for days before she tired and trundled home. Within a traditional hillside hamlet, a humble small-holding is where I claim cultural home, despite feeling neither embedded nor situated here. Inside the quaint walls of these old farmhouses, isolated tribes of village elders dominate. With an ... read more

In the past nine months I have had the craziest whirlwind of fun and adventure, resulting in me having my best summer ever! This time last year, I had just begun my degree at the University of Lincoln and was planning on doing a summer camp programme the next summer. It wasn't until the next January, however, when I eventually took a deep breath and applied to be on BUNAC's Summer Camp USA programme. I had begun to apply with another well-known company, but I soon discovered that BUNAC was a lot cheaper. At first glance, the application form looked quite daunting- large white boxes that I had to fill with the right words- but on closer inspection, I discovered that I had the right words with which to fill those boxes, and my application grew ... read more

We have had a very busy few weeks and we thought we would put up some pics of our exciting activities over here in rainy England. We have had some very mixed weather, sunshine and showers all round and we have had a few chilly days too. Mind you, we went for a walk last week along the river bank by mum's house and I got burnt! We have caught up with so many people, it has been brilliant. So many play dates with so many friends, the children think they are in heaven! This afternoon, we are off to Haven Holiday in Filey near Scarborough until Friday with my mum, Ian's parents and Ian's son Joseph. The kids are very excited about the activities ahead and we are very much hoping for some sunshine so ... read more

The basic criteria for a blog entry from my angle will be loosely dubbed an escape route from home, which involves at least an overnight stay in some shape or form, thus allowing a 2-night camping trip to a British seaside town to nestle alongside higher-budget and further-flung trips. With my trusty piece of canvas barely having been put to any use beforehand, pitching a tent at a campsite at the town of Burgh-Le-Marsh, on the outskirts of the more prominent British seaside town of Skegness, the drama unfolded. This trip was actually a 'family gathering' of sorts, and involved an 'indoor' version of what was to be intended as an outdoor barbeque (blame the weather!), followed by a trip the following morning into the oh-so-bracing seaside resort town of Skegness. While amusement complexes line the ... read more

We have had a complaint that we have not written since we have been away, so, due to popular demand, we are back!!! Only a brief one mind as I don't have many pics at the moment...more to follow! Our trip back was ok, but not great. Our flight was delayed, but on the plus side, this meant that Soph went and chatted up the pilots and they were both invited to go and see the cockpit before we took off! They were so excited and even pressed some buttons apparently. I was not allowed to join them sadly, even though I tried several times!! We arrived back in the UK to great weather and the end of a heatwave by the sound of things. It was hot hot hot but really nice not to be ... read more

Leaving Grimsby we continued up the east coast headed for Whitby we stopped in the town of Scarborough and visited Scarborough Castle. This ruin was started in 900 AD. There was evidence of settlements in 500 BC from archeological digs and there are remains of a Roman signal station. Scarborugh is also a great shopping town with huge pedestrian malls. Did a little shopping for the grandkids. On up the coast we stopped at Whitby our and our next hotel but before dinner we were to visit the Whitby Abbey. Also a ruin (obviously) it was constructed in 657 AD but fell into ruin when Henry 8th took over all religious properties and gave them to his buddies. Dinner was at the Estbek House in Sands End 5 minutes down the road. Elke made this reservation ... read more
