Dilemma over and no need to unpack and repack the bag again in a vain attempt to make sure the most important items are in! Very grateful thanks to the Pride of Africa (Kenya Airways) for their generosity in allowing us an additional 23kg in weight free of charge - that's on top of the 46kg each we already have!! Clare can now comfortably pack all her dressings and bandages for the health centre and I can add more toys and crayons for the orphanage. Unsure how we are going to carry or even move 115kg of luggage between us plus 2 x 10kg hand luggage bags, but am hopeful a dashing knight in shining armour will assist two maidens in distress. Watch this space!!! Now to find the missing dwarf................. read more

Got some more things from ebay and some items from work, so needed to empty one of my bags again and re-pack it! Must be the 100th time the bag has been emptied and re-filled and hopefully will be the last. This time I had to get 6 weebles and Snow White & the 7 Dwarves in, complete with 2 little birds and a load of tools for the dwarves. The only 2 problems were, the bag already weighed the maximum 23kg and one of the dwarves was missing even though he was with the rest the last time I looked! Anyway, some face masks and baby wipes have been removed and the toys packed tightly into the bag. I have zipped it up and re-weighing shows it's only 200g over the limit of 23kg. Must ... read more

One week to go! After a year of planning and fundraising, it's almost time to head off to Heathrow and leave Europe behind for 4 weeks. My bags are packed, my travelling outfit chosen and my spending money converted to dollars. Just one week left at work, a load of housework to do and shopping so that no one starves whilst I'm away. I am feeling somewhat apprehensive at this moment in time, for many reasons, but mainly because I can't prepare myself totally for what's to come. Hopefully I will get it all across in this blog and let you all share in the up and down adventure that will be Malawi. I will add photos so you can see the people we meet and some of the things we get up to. Thanks to ... read more

Hi All, A lovely crisp cold winters morning this morning with frost on the ground, although it didn't last long once the sun came up, so I went around the town to take some photos. As you can see there are not many people around on a Sunday morning. It's funny but I've never considered my hometown as being pretty but after being away for so long and going around and taking photos I now appreciated how old some of the buildings are here. It's been great to catch up with my oldest and best friends while I've been back and a big thank you to you all. Enjoy the photos. Jah Bless... read more

Hi All, We went in search of the remains of a church of The Knights Templar. It is supposed to be one of the few places left in Britain to have any ruins from the Templars. The Templars were big landowners in Lincolnshire and all of their Lincolnshire holdings were run from the church. The church fell into disrepair after the dissolution of the monasteries. After passing through RAF Cranwell, which is the officer training and pilot training college, we went to Byard's Leap. The story goes that an old witch lived on the crossroads of Ermine Street and Newark Road and the locals were very afraid of this powerful and ugly old crone. One day a knight was passing by, returning from the crusades, and the locals asked him to help them get rid of ... read more

Hi All, Last Monday I went to Lincoln to do a little bit of shopping to find the things that we cannot find in China. We didn't make it up to the top of Steep Hill to the cathedral which was a bit of a pity because it is so pretty around Bailgate. Next time. Enjoy the photos. Jah Bless... read more

We arrived at my mum's place in N. Lincs about 10 days ago. Great to be in a familiar place with regular meals and the prospect of staying in the same bed for an extended period of time. Also good to be outside doing physical jobs again - mowing lawns, chopping down trees, etc. Mum is well and (I hope) happy to give up her normally peaceful existence for the time we'll be here. The days have generally been fine but we've been spoilt by the Italian/French sunshine we experienced last month, so we're still waiting for the real summer to start! Although we're happy not to be tied to the car, we've managed to have a few trips out - York, Beverley, Brigg, Scunthorpe, Sheffield. My brother Keith visited us for a day, along with ... read more

We had a Withnail moment today. As we drove through the Yorkshire Dales in heavy rain, we were reminded of his words: "We've come on holiday by mistake." We'd woken to rain. The BBC website reported flash floods around York. It had been our aim to make a stop in Lincoln for elevenses and a visit to the Gothic cathedral, a favourite of Ruskin's. As we walked through the Minster Yard, the wind hurled cold rain in our faces. There's a statue of Tennyson and his dog by the cathedral. A notice board claims him as a son of Lincolnshire, but points out ingenuously that he spent all his adult life "elsewhere". After a brief look at the nave, we retreated to a tea room on Steep Hill. A local paper reported that this very street ... read more

The first overnight stop on our slow drive to Scotland is Stamford in Lincolnshire, a centre of the wool trade in the Middle Ages, just an hour's drive north of Cambridge. We pass Stilton, after which Britain's best-known blue cheese is named. It isn't made there, but was sold at two coaching inns in the village. As long ago as the early 18th Century, Defoe associated Stilton with cheese. An e-mail from Expedia shows the address of our hotel as 24A High Street, Stamford. We imagine an old coaching inn in the town centre. Driving among the limestone buildings, honey yellow in the bright sunlight, we find that the High Street is pedestrianised. The sat nav leads us to a small square beyond, but there's no sign of a hotel. We park in Bath Row, where ... read more
