This is all about the weather. COLD, and wind blowing through to the bones and SNOW on the cars from overnight. The Hotel is the best B&B we have experienced in England and would love to come back in the summer. Remember the Kildare Hotel - no doctor available.... read more

Nipping to Cleethorpes is not traveling, in the wider sense but taking a trip out of a land-locked city to the nearest north east coastal town. It’s about taking a chance – on weather, light, emotions, friendships, whether your boots are water proof, if you are hungry – quite possibly anything but the biggest factor is being open to the possibility of feeling free. If all these things come together – the result is pure gold. Cleethorpes now signifies that possibility for one friend and I – it’s a chance of soul-rinsing. You see, you never know what you will find when you get there and – in the fading English Winter light, you can find it all. It’s all there. On the platform at Sheffield station, slipping in with the crowds waiting for the same ... read more

An ordinary woman. An extraordinary woman. Miss Hilda Craven was born in 1892 and lived to the age of 102. She was ruled over by seven different British monarchs, and lived through two world wars. She saw the first step into space, the development of electricity, atomic power and the digital age. While the world was turningon it's head and changing beyond recognition Hilda stayed the same. She left school at the age of 13 with one qualification – needlework – but began working immediately as a 'day girl' for the local butcher. She worked six and a half days out of seven, helping in the house and looking after the children, and was paid 1/6d a week. Her Sunday half-day was taken up with going to chapel. She worked for families in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and ... read more

Didn’t even switch on my computer the whole time in Tetford. I was totally devoid of any internet signal and wifi at the house, so I’ve been totally disconnected and didn’t feel the need to turn the computer on at all. On the trip from Wales we decided to go through Bristol so Dad and Luki could check out where I’d be. We conveniently found that the car we hired had a GPS which got us everywhere through windy country roads and confusing motorways. We named the woman Penelope and thanked her when she constantly pointed out that Dad was over the speed limit. The trip to Bristol wasn’t very long, but once we got there we got quite lost amongst the busy city streets filled with cafes and small pubs. Seeing the city I absolutely ... read more

A few people asked me to start a blog again for my new adventure to South Korea! I'm not sure how much time I'll have to do it but I'll give it a go :-) So I'm just testing it works before I leave tomorrow!! Packed items: chocolate, teabags, cards from friends, duvet, pillows. Items not yet packed: clothes, shoes, school folders! I think my priorities are in the right order, but I also think I should probably go and keep packing. Ta-ra for now! Claire xxxx... read more

We often get quite complacent about ordinary places. Having grown up in the seaside town of Cleethorpes, I never really think about blogging wherever I go to see my family there. This time, with a new camera in hand, I thought I would give it a bit of praise. One thing which was certainly not praiseworthy was the weather! It was freezing cold and we frequently cowered away from the rain. Early may should be sunny and warm, but we had leaden skies, four degrees, threats of frost and driving horizontal rain! Not nice!! Even so, we try to get a bit of exercise as often as we can. We have our usual routes for a stroll. One of those is the seafront where we brace ourselves against the Easterly coastal breeze (or gale depending on ... read more

Last week, we talked about needing to see the sea and the big sky of a coastline and to feel the open elements. We have been feeling land-locked. So, we talked about the nearest coastal place to travel to by train and came up with Cleethorpes. Which is how we arrived here today on a whim, through a brief five minute conversation, a thought, an idea - a choice. Cleethorpes is all new to me. And, the surprise on exiting the small train station, crossing the road, walking straight onto the long expanse of barren beach, faced by 4 old donkeys, a pier, the sea in the distance and a long long horizon against a porcelain blus sky poured great joy into me and I knew instantly the day was going to be good. May I ... read more
