Sometimes you just strike lucky! The weather turned out to be perfect and the Cleethorpes air show was fantastic. The Battle of Britain Memorial flight were, of course, wonderful but as usual, the Red Arrows stole the show!!... read more

I'm on the 8:11 Sheffield to Cleethorpes with my knitting, heading for a long walk along the beach in the East coast sunshine then on for a bag of chips at the Mermaid chippy in front of the sea. The mermaid chip shop was once the ladies waiting room at the station and you can still pick out the old English elegance in the windows but that's about it. Cleethorpes is such a joy with it's old tired British Sea side look, washy paintwork and brilliant sky. In about 1994, I read Laura Esquivel’s ‘Like Water for Chocolate’ She wrote stories around food and cooking as a means of communication and transferring her emotions to others, through crying into the food and laughing whilst working. I can’t remember the story exactly but I can remember the ... read more

Week 4 and a half. Life still rumbles on in Suzy. On working days we get up early, shower and I head off for a day at the coal face as they used to say. Glenn is left to his own devices. Puzzle books to the ready, music on the radio and the TV if all else fails. He is getting through puzzle books as if they are going out of fashion. On non working days we lie in, two heaters blasting away keeping us as snug as bugs in a rug. When we eventually rise it is to a leisurely breakfast of coffee, croissants and toast. Life as full timers to motorhomers hasn't taken that long to get used to although we definitely would prefer to be in sunnier climes. Nottinghamshire is a tad cold at ... read more

Usually field trips are exciting days when you miss class for the day. Unfortunately that is not the case in England. We went on Friday, September 20th when the university does not have school allowing all the students to travel Europe. We went to the town of Lincoln where we took a step in the past all the way back to 48 A.D. when the Romans were running everything! We started the day by being divided into 4 different groups. My group began on a self-guided tour of the town of Lincoln, then to the Castle, off to the Cathedral, and ending with the Roman ruins. During the self-guided tour we walked around the streets looking at the cute store shops opening for the day. They had coffee and tea shops, boutiques, chocolate shops, and thrift ... read more

Ah! a very comfortable bed makes a huge difference to a night’s sleep and the Travelodge at Thorpe on the Hill has been recently refurbished and has a brand new bed. And the sun is shining....although it was still a bit cool when we tested the air outside the window. With the sunny weather and a desire to see both the Wolds and the Coast we will leave the city tour of Lincoln until tomorrow before we head onto Pudsey. Expecting to add another 200km or thereabouts to distance travelled with today’s drive we were smartly on the road with a full tank of petrol. We had picked out the market town of Spilsby on the edge of the Wolds to take time out for a walk and that meant taking the A158 east towards the ... read more

At least there doesn’t appear to be any rain in the forecast for today but the temperature with the wind chill factor still means that it won’t get any warmer than 12C today. However this will be OK for some walking and we plan to stop along the way as we cross Norfolk and head into Lincolnshire to do this. We took the A146 to Lodden, a market town where the Holy Trinity Church built in the 15th century dominates the town and its history. The church grounds were full of graves and headstones laid out in some parts in neat rows but in other parts all over the place. A woman inside the church was very informative about the history of the town and allowed us access to the Vicar’s room which was up a ... read more

After two weeks of Eastern being back at school, it was finally time to have my first day of classes abroad! It started off an early morning as all the roommates and I woke up at 7:30 in order to make it to breakfast before it closed the doors. All 150 plus students at Harlaxton had the first British Studies lecture at 8:30. We sat in the gorgeous Long Gallery and tried to keep up with the British Lecturer Mr. Baker. As time went by students continued to type quickly on their laptops trying to keep up with the lecture and not staring off at the beautiful room around us. It helped knowing all of our teachers sit in the back of the room to make sure we did not creep on facebook. After my first ... read more

This morning Megan, Danika, and I decided to wake up early to get to breakfast by 8 in order to hop on the first bus into town at 8:30. We were going to Grantham, England for the morning to explore deeper into the cultural difference in England. As we left the beautiful manor, we were still taken off guard by driving on the wrong side of the road. Once we started to approach the town more traffic became heavier, roads became narrow and much more complicated. A simple round about did not exist in Grantham. People were crossing the streets early to get into town to begin the shopping at Poundland, Morrisons, the local street markets, and the many different shops. Today was shopping day for the town of Grantham. As we first walk into the ... read more

After 5 hours to the airport, 3 waiting to board the 8.5 hour flight, an hour waiting to board the bus for another 2 hour drive to the manor; all I could think about is when can I sleep. This moment was completely taken away from me when we turned the first bend to see Harlaxton Manor on the hill in the distance. It looked as if I had just stepped onto a movie! I turned from be exhausted into ready to explore this amazing place I get to call home with chills running all over my body. After the mile drive up the rock path driveway, I reached my new home. Here I was greeted by numerous faculty and staff welcoming me to my new life. We were all lead up a marble staircase with ... read more

Left Skegness at around 10.00 a.m. with some trepidation because of weather forecast for snow and holdups to traffic. We went and bought a blanket and some food (biscuits) and one bottle of water in case. The snow on the cars and housetops was our morning greeting, and then as we left the city area the snow provided those scenes that you only have seen on postcards or movies. Fields covered in snow, fences with snow where the wind made it stick and then the trees, hedges, footpaths, and just about everything else had its own tale to tell. Only about 20 minutes into the trip and we came across a roundabout with cars, trucks pointing in various directions and a policeman in large bright yellow parka waving arms and pointing. On arrival at his "welcoming" ... read more
