This morning I drove out into the countryside to visit a couple of places of historical interest. The first is Mürten (pronounced MOOR-ten) which is a famous for its still-standing medieval wall. It is a quaint town with period houses and old buildings, including a tall clock tower over the main gate (see photo). I wandered around town and particularly liked the walk up on the ramparts. I've had the chance to walk along several medieval walls, but this was the first time that the ramparts had a roof (see photos). After Mürten, I drove a little further out to Avenches which is famous for its Roman ruins. Actually, as these things go, the ruins at Avenches are pretty slim pickings. The arena is smallish, but at least you can tell what it is - or ... read more

Today I am in Bern, the capital of Switzerland. It was founded in the 1100s at an easy-to-defend bend in the river (see photo). It is the second largest city in Switzerland (after Zurich) and has a pleasant people-friendly center. There is an efficient tram system (see photo of tram running through medieval tower clock) and a largely pedestrianized old town with arcades and fountains (see photo). The city symbol is the bear (see photo of front of history museum) and its most famous resident was Albert Einstein who was working as a technical expert in the patent office here when he developed and published his famous theories (see photo of Einstein when he was in Bern). I've enjoyed my day in the city. I took the tram from my hotel into the old town and ... read more

Monday, 24th April 2017 Since there is no direct train service between Geneva and Interlaken, I decided to make a brief stopover at Bern, the capital city of Switzerland for a couple of hours. On my way to Bern, my train passed by the city of Lausanne where it is home to the Olympic Museum. Due to time constraints, I had to forgo the museum but I'm pretty sure that I would have the chance to be back and visit it. Intercity train travels within Switzerland is an absolutely amazing experience thanks to the stunning postcard perfect vistas that greeted me everywhere from where I was seated. This is akin to watching a live National Geographic documentary unfolding before my eyes. Snow-capped mountains, crystal clear waters and bright blue skies in spring weather - the view ... read more

Tomorrow I fly to London and I'm ready to go... anyways I'll get to that in a moment. Firstly since my last post I've travelled about 30 miles on foot through parks, gardens, downtown and 14 miles along the Aare river. This place has some very impressive natural landscapes and an incredible backdrop of the Alps. The food here is also quite good. The last two days were good adventuring and today I went down to the train station to get my ticket for tomorrow and make sure I planned out my trip (I have to take a train to Zurich to catch a plane to London at 11am and I wanted to make sure there were no issue). Well I found that the quiet little town had transformed into a madhouse, there were protest and ... read more

This morning is the second morning in switzerland and I awoke to find that it had snowed last night. While it may be cold it is definily beautiful. Yesterday I ventured forth and spent the day wandering around the town admiring the old town district. It wasn't until I got hungry that I remembered that I no literally no German, so instead of ordering mystery food from one of the very expensive restraunts in old town I got some bread and yogurt from the nearby gas station and had my own little feast. Anyways I spent the rest of the night looking up important phrases like "Ich mochte" and "Ich bin nicht in der Lage, Deutsch zu sprechen, und ich fühle mich schlecht über sie" so now I am ready for the new day. Did I ... read more

I'm writing this first post from the comfort of my own bed at a quaint little bed and breakfast setup on one of the many hills just outside of Bern Switzerland. As I am writing this I have the joy of listening to my Swiss neighbor (who also happens to be the only other patron here) in the room next door having a rather song like conversation on the phone. Aside from the paper thin walls this place is really quite exceptional with all the standard amenities with the charm of your grandmothers house. it also has an absolutely stunning view of the alps from the lobby balcony that a picture cannot do justice. Anyways I got the blog setup and while there's more to the adventure that will have to wait as it is time ... read more

We went to Bern, to arrange some personal errands in our embassy. After all the errands were done, we did not skip the chance to explore the city, visit the attractions and feel the vibe of the canton. We did not see the Bears this time, since it was winter but we enjoyed strolling in the old town and the hidden alleys and beautiful buildings.... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! Just like yesterday this day started with a hearty breakfast in good company, in fact so good that we kind of prolonged our stay around the table a bit to long and therefore had to run to the train station. We got there in time though even though we became a bit sweaty in the process. It also was a bit prolonged because we said our goodbyes to Tim who will be going home today so he won't be there when we return from Bern. The target for today's trip was of course Bern, the capital of Switzerland. It took about 2 hours with overlays in Sargas and Zürich to get there from Buchs. We of course mainly stuck to the old city which is quite beautiful but it's skyline is kind ... read more

Hello from Bern! Andrew and I took it easy this morning, eating the bread, cheese, yogurt and fruit we bought last night at the grocery, then heading out about 0930. We stopped at a neighborhood we saw from the tram, then wandered til we found a cafe for coffee. Once again, we discovered that everything in Bern is really expensive, with a double espresso running $4.50 each. We were extra surprised that drinking the coffee at the cafe was $4.00 more than getting it to go...which we found out AFTER ordering and getting the bill. Lesson learned. The morning was very cool (a nice change) so we walked toward the center of town. We discovered a chess board on the walkway so stopped for a quick game. After Andrew beat me handily, we walked on to ... read more

Part 2 - We arrived in Bern about 1600 and went straight to our Airbnb apartment on the west central side of town. I was a little nervous about this next experiment, but our host Laura was absolutely delightful in welcoming us! She was an au pair in San Francisco so she spoke perfect English and understands Americans. The apartment is clean and comfortable, and our room is a perfect. Best of all, the WiFi is strong and consistent! Andrew and I are being very careful to not disturb Laura and her roommate. After getting settled, Andrew and I headed to Terrasse Restaurant in the center of town. We sat on a covered terrace next to the Aare River, which roars through Bern. Good thing we got there when we did because a storm rolled through, ... read more
