This last week has been full of events and trips to the mountain. Tuesday Denise, Dani and I started the day by heading into Bern to do a bit of shopping. It wasn’t long before we got everything we needed and Denise headed home, while Dani and I hopped on the bus to head to the other side of the river that runs through Bern. We stopped at an old ice skating rink and spent about an hour skating around in the snow . At first I was so shaky and bad (I think the last time I ice skated I was in middle school) but after a while I was starting to get the hang of it. About that time though, they had to clear the ice so Dani and I watched some hockey that ... read more

Merry Christmas! Wow what an eventful weekend, full of tons of new adventures, which definitely helped ease being away from home on the holidays. Friday I woke up to Switzerland covered in SNOW! It was so beautiful. It was really coming down so Dani and I bundled up to go shovel the driveway. This was a first for me, and wow is it a good workout. It was so frustrating though, about the time you have one area done and start another you turn around and everything is covered up again. We got most of it cleared away so that the family could park in her driveway. After relaxing for a bit we started to get everything ready for Christmas Eve dinner. We set the table for a wonderful, authentic, Swiss cheese fondue. Dani’s grandma and ... read more

THis is going to be a long one...my interent wasn't working this week. This last week has flown by so fast! Tuesday Katie and I took the metro towards the airport and then I continued on to work. The morning was a normal day of work for me. I spent the first two hours taking the second graders out and preparing them for their English exam. The third hour I had a free period. During the free period something unexpected happened. The Australian auxiliary, Sandy, received a phone call that her grandfather was in the hospital and undergoing surgery. I felt terrible for her. She left for the day to try and get on Skype to talk to her family. It was really sad. For the afternoon I headed to 5th grade where I finished grading ... read more

Grüsse!! The rest of my time in Switzerland flew by! Before I knew it, I only had 2 weeks left and so much to fit in! The last two weeks included lots visiting with various family members around Hasle Rüegsau, a trip to Zürich, celebrating a cousin's birthday and making Christmas cookies in Bern, visiting Fribourg and Gruyères, a trip to Strasbourg and a wedding in the Alps near Kiental. On my trip to Zürich, I met up with my friend Edwin for lunch and dinner, and otherwise wandered around. In the morning, I wasn't so bothered to actually be much of a tourist, but still I forced myself to at least wander around the older part of town along the river. I found a cute street to take a lovely photo of, but I never ... read more

Before moving to Australia, I decided a trip to Switzerland was in order. Mostly to visit Grossmuetti and the family. :) It doubled as waiting time just in case I didn't get the visa, but finally I was granted my visa the day before I left Montreal. It was my first trip in close to three years, so it was good be back. The first weekend here in Switzerland, I relaxed in Interlaken, helping my aunt and her family do some fall yard work. The weekend included some nice long walks from the house to the town, alongside the lake, visiting some old ruins, and having a Sauser and vermicelle in town (an unfermented grape juice and a chestnut, cream, and meringue-based dessert, both seasonal specialties). The weather wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't too cold and ... read more

Geneva When I stayed in Berlin my host, Claudia, told me about her friends in Geneva and said when I go there I should ask if I can stay with them. So Chris and I did, we stayed with Guiseppe and Claudia’s ex Carlo, two Italians who work in CERN in Geneva. Their house is quite far from Geneva centre, in fact it is in France! They were so lovely, they showed us around the town a bit, we saw the bridge over the river and the huge fountain which goes 40 metres in the air or something. We went to a restaurant for some fantastic chicken and walked around the old town. Chris and I went to explore the town in the morning, we walked a lot! We went on the pier where the huge ... read more

On my way to Bern I stopped off in Zurich for a couple of hours to have a look around. The Swiss say Zurich is the worst city in Switzerland, people from Zurich think it's the best, so i was intregrued to see it. I followed the walk on my map and it took me to the river, through the cute winding streets on the edge of the river, and to the lake at the end. The buildings were nice, the weather fine, and the people out and about, so I had no problems enjoying myself in Zurich! Then it started to rain so I had to dodgethe raindrops a bit as I walked though the town on the other side. Even in the rain Zurich isn't such a bad city! I got some dinner and ... read more

Sunday 7.3.2010 day 145 Zurich - Bern - Lausanne Switzerland is the home of the world wide web and lots of other stuff but it is snowing again today, even so we thought we would try and avoid toll ways. We got to the centre of Zurich ok and had a look around that but when we tried to get to the capital of Switzerland, Bern without tolls the roads were too icy and snowy so we decided go by the toll roads. Which cost $40 Aus and the pass last a year only thing is we only needed it for today? Oh well better to be safe on the toll roads. Once on the toll way we drove to Bern, it’s so small for a capital and has a wonderful 15th century city centre with ... read more

GENEVE/BERN Day 33 I arrived in Geneve and was a little disappointed. Yes, the alps are beautiful but there is not much else to this town. It would be great if I had a crap load of money to spend on expensive clothes and watches but I don’t so I only stayed 2 hours on got on the next train to Bern. I did find it really funny the amount of clocks and watches that are EVERYWHERE. I get that Geneve and Switzerland is the mecca for watches but really so many. I made it to Bern and immediately knew it was a better choice to visit. It is a small town but all the buildings are very swiss and the old town is really neat to walk through. You still have a lot of ... read more

"Why is there confetti in my purse and how did it get everywhere else?" This brief thought seemed to be one of many like it that I asked myself while in Bern for the Fasnacht festival. It was a whirlwind event filled with bright colors and blue skies, something that Ashley, Kate and I found ourselves enjoying to the fullest. Since we were unable to make it to the famous Fasnacht's in Lucern or Basel, Ashley found out that we would be able to go to Switzerland's capital city to see theirs. Although Bern is thought to be a boring city, which I can attest to on the day's when there is no festival going on, it turned out to be one of my favorite things I have done in Switzerland thus far. Not only did ... read more
