Katie and I woke up refreshed and ready to go. We knew today was going to be a pretty light sightseeing day, so we slept in a little bit. We roamed the neighborhood and stumbled upon a great Doner Kabob place. It was delicious. We then started the guided map tour. The free map we got from the hotel gave us an efficient walking tour of the city. I thought my planned walk was pretty efficient, but this one was more so. Damn. We saw the bear park, a variety of different fountains, a few churches, etc. It's a pretty compact town so we were done in a couple of hours, if that. That also included stopping for a beer at the brewery, admiring the views, and resting our feet. We also stopped by at a ... read more

Geez, will these people please be quiet! Katie and I wanted to get a good night's sleep before heading to Switzerland, but there was a tour group that left our hotel at about 7am or so. However, for 30-45 minutes before that, we had to deal with doors on our floor slamming, people being loud in the hallway, etc. At one point, the tour guide was yelling instructions to about 30 people on our floor. Think about that when you're trying to sleep and the walls are really thin. It was so bad that at one point I went out to the hallway to politely ask them if they can please be quiet. For those of you that know me, you know that noise doesn't normally bother me. Think about it. That's how loud they were. ... read more

Yes, two buses and six trains. We did a circular route up into the center of Switz. To the capitol, Bern. Train ride to the Emmatal area between Bern and Luzern to Langanau. Back to Bern south to Lausanne and along beautiful lake Geneva to our valley city, Sion and bus up to our home stay in the Val d Herrens, it must have been a special day for the high schoolers as there were hundreds, glued to their devises - sounds like a lot but the trains run on time and if you can read their schedule you can go everywhere. Today a boat trip on the Thunnersee (Lake Thun) Here's a few pics from yesterday. Too tired to get the blog out last night. Lowell... read more

Switzerland 4 - Bern and Stein am Rhein, July 11-12, 2014 The last portion of our Swiss vacation began with the train from Wengen to Bern where we spent a few hours in the middle of the day. The old city is very beautiful and pedestrian-friendly. We had read that one should see the chiming of the Clock Tower, with little figurines that come marching out at five before the hour. So, we got to the clock with time to spare, took a few photos, and waited until well past the hour without seeing anything. Were we on the wrong side? Was it broken? No, we were not at the Clock Tower; we were one block away at a tower with a clock, but it was not the famous one. There were a couple other puzzled-looking ... read more

Friends visiting us are always jealous about where we live. "Hey - this is like holiday. And you can enjoy this every single day" - this is, what they normally tell us. Well, we know, it is not the worst place to live and a lot of people spend a lot of money and travel a lot of k's to come here - where we "just" live. We have felt guilty a lot of times, especially when we are complaining about our life and when our only goal is to catch a flight and go..... Well, in general, we know, we are really blessed to live in Switzerland (and especially Berne!), to have our own companies and to be able to travel. But, also in Switzerland, you have to work hard for your money - and ... read more

After staying up for New Years and all the fireworks last night, we made it a late start today. Had some breakfast at the hotel and then had a quick driving tour of Bern, including the old town and the bear pits. Didn't get to see any bears...apparently it's time to hibernate :) Our drive back to Zurich took us through the town of Lucerne, but then we were glad to get back to our apartment and cook ourselves dinner for the first time in days. Early night as we are planning to go back to Grindelwald tomorrow for some more toboganning!... read more

I said an early morning goodbye to Simone and Micha in Davos and set off on my three-train journey across Switzerland so I could spend the day with Marc Pouliot in Biel, and then meet up with Christine in Bern. Marc met me at the train station and proceeded to show me around the big town of Biel, which included a few random statues and fountains in the middle of the old town. He took me to the rink which included a smelly tour of the lockerroom. He showed me how in Biel they put the standing room (crazy Biel fans) next to the standing room visiting fans, which appears to be seperated with a fence. It looked a bit like Mad Max and beyond the thunderdome. Since I couldn’t meet up with Christine until later, ... read more

After the tour I spent two nights in a nice hotel (I'd prebooked it, figuring I'd need it, and boy was I right). Then I stayed a night with a Contiki friend in her hotel not far. After some days spent lunching and shopping on Oxford St and a night out in Soho, a lot of tour friends departed and I moved into the Watford flat again. I was here on my lonesome for two nights since the relos were in Tetford, so I got some washing done and tried to catch up on sleep. On my Aunt and Uncle's return it had already been agreed upon that I would then move in with my cousins since the flat is so small. Problem was I had never met them. But was planning to stay with them ... read more

We took a train to a small town outside Bern, wound up many hills in a tiny car in the rain until we reached our destination. Balmeggberg. A beautiful organic farm with many families living off the land. Yurts, a Sauna, beautiful music room and really lovely people to share it with. Brad and I had been learning Poi through friends and also online videos from Nick's site http://www.playpoi.com/ for a few years now. It was going to be something really special to be able to learn directly from him in such a beautiful setting. It exceeded any expectation I could have had in my mind. Our schedule for the week became 7:30am wake up for Meditation and Yoga. Break for Brunch and Relaxing. Noon: Nick and Alien John taught us Poi Break: for Snacks and ... read more
