We made a rather hurried dash from the hotel in Paris to the pickup point for the bus, I call bullshit on the 4km google maps said it was. We got there dead on 8am to find a big blue bus with no one around. At least we werent late. Jumped on the bus and made our way out of Paris through the crazy Parisian traffic. Was good once we hit the express way and started heading through the farms and stuff east of Paris. Quite pretty with the odd castle looking thing every half hour or so. Made it into Bern about 7ish, and hiked up through the town to the backpackers we were staying at. Hotel Glocke is in the old part of town with the cobblestone streets and old buildings and tonnes of ... read more

Hello my darlings, It has been a whole two day since we've spoken. How are all of you? Well, enough about you, let's talk about me for a change. We arrived in Berne two days ago, as I said in my last entry, and it truly is a beautiful and idyllic little town. That being said we have definitely had some very exciting moments while we've stayed here. Yesterday, we went on a walk around the city. Mike and I followed the road down to a park. We walked through the park where we met some caged animals. If you walk through the park, they have these animals that you can look at while you go: pelicans, puffins, hogs, antelope, horned beasts, unhorned beasts etc. Ultimately, we arrived at something like riverdale farm. Here's where my ... read more

Rather than attempting to edit and amend my earlier posts, I will simply slog onward through the rush of events. The class is now complete, and my hat is done. (But I don't have a picture of me wearing it!) I had hoped to visit the Freiamter Strohmuseum (straw museum) Wohlen in Aargau, near Zurich. But the Saturday hours are brief, and the transport details are too slim, allowing only an hour — IF I find my way in a timely fashion. So I will visit there Sunday, when all the factors are more inviting. And then, homeward, Monday morning. Today, I will hang out at the school and the Ballenberg museum grounds to make one more entry on the terrific cultural attractions of the museum. The weather is a bit misty here in this Alpine ... read more

This will have to be a short entry. I had borrowed a Swiss adapter powerplug from the school. (Switzerland is in Europe, but doesn't use the European adapter I bought at Radio Shack.) And the borrowed adapter was returned at the end of class. So I'm on battery. I will update this entry, as I do want to sing the praises of this school. It's a major tourist destination, as it is affiliated with a large cultural attraction similar to Sturbridge Village, or Williamstown in the US. And to go along with the colony of buildings and antiques, Kurszentrum Ballenberg offers the opportunity to study with kraft meisters of various disciplines. (This is not Disneyland!) The school hosts real studio work for serious artists, and for anyone who wants to try a hand at practicing a ... read more

Spinning Gold from Straw It's great to have a purpose for traveling, rather than merely wandering the lonely planet. My wife and I once went on a driving excursion around New England, searching for the best hot dog. We researched the topic first, and then set off to taste the results of our query. This shaped our itinerary, and added some sense of direction. Having a theme for that vacation made it all the more enjoyable. As my first post explains, I have this terrible need to replace a favorite hat by making one with my own hands. Where does desire originate? Dunno. But, the question engages me. Contemplation is life. And why would anyone want to spin gold from straw, when straw is already so beautiful on its own? Yours truly, Rumpelstiltskin ... read more

A great day walking in the country side and forest in Jura in Grenchen Daniela and I went to a special amazingly interesting course in order to get herbs for salads or for tea and even could be used as vegetables. We had to leave at 8:15 on a Saturday...bouhhh quite hard, but it was so much worth it. We arrived a bit earlier and had the time to get a Latte Macchiato ! We began at 10 am our discovery and here are the great herbs I sampled and dried to use for tea or in salads. The finesse of the finesse is my new home pesto sauce I prepared. I do not know the names in English since the whole explanation was in German Löwenzahn (pissenlit) = good for the liever and in salds ... read more

20th March 2009 in Fribourg/Berne On the March 17th I finally reached Berne and stayed there one day, that is, I stayed in a village called Zäziwil because, for the parliament's spring session no hotel rooms were available in Berne. The hotel I in Zäziwil is called Unique Hotel Appenberg and is just wonderful. As I had never really been in Berne I made a tourist excursion on March 18 and that was a really wonderful day. I walked through the old town and just relaxed. The next day I took off at 10am with the aim to reach Fribourg at around 7pm. Unfortunately, the blisters on my feet which started forming on the 17th became so bad that I had to stop the walk at around 4pm and take the train to Fribourg. So there ... read more

... this lead to the city been called Bern. After having a delicious breakfast with Sabine and wishing her luck with her studies I was on a 9am train to Berne. Bern (or Berne) is the capital city of Switzerland and actually the old town is on the UNESCO heritage list. Thanks to the Eurail pass me and Nadz got there I got to take the train without buying a ticket. When I got to Bern the tourist info centre was there. So that's where I went first. As usual I hardly know wherever to visit in a city so I thought why not ask the tourist office where they would recommend. The girl gave me a map and told me to have a walk along the route from Spitalgasse to the Rose Garden to the ... read more
