I am looking to take a train from Lyon to Geneva and want to know if a reservation is required for a seat on these trains.

Usually on the trains in Europe, if you dont have a reservation that means that you are not guaranteed a seat. You can sit where you want until somebody with a reservation for the seat gets on the train and then you have to get up and try to find someplace else to sit. Or else you can stand.
