Geez, will these people please be quiet! Katie and I wanted to get a good night's sleep before heading to Switzerland, but there was a tour group that left our hotel at about 7am or so. However, for 30-45 minutes before that, we had to deal with doors on our floor slamming, people being loud in the hallway, etc. At one point, the tour guide was yelling instructions to about 30 people on our floor. Think about that when you're trying to sleep and the walls are really thin. It was so bad that at one point I went out to the hallway to politely ask them if they can please be quiet. For those of you that know me, you know that noise doesn't normally bother me. Think about it. That's how loud they were.
Anyways, once we woke up, we headed over to the train station in Milan and caught our train to Bern. The ride lasted slightly under 3 hours. I must say, if you guys ever take the train from Milan to Bern, you'll see that the scenery does not disappoint. I passed a beautiful latke that I believe was Lake Maggiore. We thought it may
have been Lake Cuomo for a bit, but it was really large and the map made it seem like it may have been Lake Maggiore. It was absolutely beautiful. I wish Katie and I had pics, but Katie's phone died and my phone was full. The camera was also in our luggage. Not the best time to not have our camera on us. Trust me, there were absolutely amazing views. We spent about an hour in the dining cart admiring the great views, eating breakfast, and having a drink. It definitely made the 3 hour ride seem shorter. Afterwards, we went back to our seats to play cards. As expected, I won. I'm up 3-1 babe! (As I type this, Katie looked over and said I'm a brat haha).
After a 5 minute ride through a mountain, we were in Switzerland. There was a significant difference in the architecture, in my opinion. You'll see a couple quick pics that we took once we were in Switzerland. The grass was so green, and the farmlands were beautiful. I'm usually not one to really enjoy rolling hills and that kind of stuff, but it was really nice.
Once we got
to the hotel, we checked in and relaxed for a bit. We also explored the neighborhood a bit. We grabbed a quick bite to eat at this great sandwich spot. I had the Pouletschnitzel and Katie had the Pouletspiesse. One thing that I must let you know is that Switzerland is considerably more expensive than Italy. I knew that before the trip, but wow! We passed by a restaurant that had burgers for 55 swiss francs. If I'm not mistaken, the exchange rate is about 1.1 at the moment. Think about that. That's ridiculous.
Once we finished our meal, we went back to the hotel to have a few drinks, check email, hang out, etc. I know Bern can be done in 1/2 a day or less, so the plan for today to give Katie the option to explore or relax. Katie needs a day to relax on vacation so often, so I figured I'd give her the option. Obviously, she took me up on that offer. Later on in the evening, we walked around the neighborhood, which isn't very large, and found a great little bar underground. One thing I wasn't expecting is that streets in Bern have
storefronts like normal, but also have entrances that look like basements. If you've seen the movie "Tornado", you know the doors that lead into the ground that they run into? That's what I'm talking about. They have underground stores, bars, barber shops, etc with that kind of entrance. The place was intimate, but fun. They played pretty good music as well. After hanging out there for a bit, we headed to the bar under our hotel. The people watching was great. We listened to music, had a drink, etc. It was pretty funny watching the locals get hammered and dance. There was this one guy that was quite saucy. At one point, he was dancing with a pillar. It was hilarious.
After a while, it started to rain heavily, so we decided to call it a night. We went back to the hotel to hang out, have a few drinks, and hang out. Hopefully, the weather will be more forgiving tomorrow!
