Now that we´re a full week into March, our semester is about half over and Laura and I are in disbelief...where did the time go?! Anyway, this last weekend we went with our program to Sevilla (Seville), a city 3 hours from Granada where we found more sunshine and higher temperatures...woohoo!! We got there Friday afternoon and spent some time wandering in Plaza de España where we ate our lunches and enjoyed seeing the sun--quite a change from Granada´s rain. Then we took a bus tour of the city, stopping at the Alcazar (the royal palace) which consists of 3 different palaces, all built at different times. Then we went to the cathedral in Sevilla that is the 3rd largest in Europe next to St. Peter´s in Rome and St. Paul´s in London. It is the ... read more

If a tourist asks you for directions and you´re not sure about giving them the right ones, don´t give them any at all!!! On Friday, we were told at the Hotel that we could get a train to Seville, Spain (our next destination) from Tunes, Portugal (a town one train station away from where we were). After 4 hours of buses and waiting for the train we arrived in Tunes (5 minute train ride away) to find out that there is no train to Seville only a bus from Faro (2 train stations in the other direction from where we started) to Seville. By the time we got to Faro it was late so we decided to stay the night. Although we really liked Faro we were going to stick to our original plan and headed ... read more

Hey kids, Pia here, reporting from Valencia, where the sun shines all the time and people take it slow. Or something like that. Maybe I shouldn´t be in advertising. The remainder of our time in England can be summed up by the following: mid-morning gambling, cold, Australians, cream tea, museums, horrid fish and chips, sleep, hippies, airport. There you go. We spent Tuesday night in Stansted airport, where we got zero sleep and ate a full English breakfast at 3:30 a.m. Once we got off the plane in Spain, we had no idea what to do, so we quickly latched on to a few other Canadian travelers, and somehow made it to our hostel. Okay. The hostel. When we got there, there was just this huge wooden door, which was locked...then this man let us in, ... read more

A French student in Barcelona I'm a little French boy who once went to Barcelona to enjoy the city and study there...and from an experience to another, it turned out to be a very good experience and I decided to share it worldwide...or at least to share the good things to do in Barcelona. Because in that great city there are things and traps to be avoided and good things to be known. As a young student arriving in Barcelona, I had to find accomodation by myself and at first when you don't know anything it's quite hard... The first thing to do is look over the internet. I found a provisional and welcoming shared flat for my two first weeks here. It was near la Sagrada Familia and it was just perfect as the owner ... read more

So we end February with a rainy weekend in Granada. Today is Monday and we didn´t have classes because of the political holiday: Día de Andalucia. However, we toured some of the city we hadn´t seen: Parque de las Ciencias, Cartuja Monastery, saw some movies and found fun coffee shops where we sat to dry and enjoy each other´s company. This week, Juanma, the 17 year-old boy, had his birthday so we celebrated by having a white cake, cream in the middle and fresh chocolate drizzled over the top---which, by the way, we ate still warm! Then they sang ¨Cumpleaños Feliz, etc.¨ It was fun to see that their tradition instead of 17 spankings is 17 ear tugs--a little nicer, I must say. Lately we have made some day trips around Granada, ie Ronda of which ... read more

Unfortunately I didn't get to see that much of Valencia, since my bus got in at 1 am, so I didn't get to the hostel until 2 so I didn't get an early start on the day and then I had to be at the airport at 3 for my flight home. Since it was a Sunday morning it was a market day, so there were lots of people walking very slowly through narrow streets, and haggling over prices... walking quickly to see more of the town was completely out of the question, so I gave up on that idea and just sauntered with everyone through various parks and squares, fountains, and by old churches.... read more

We left Barcelona and got into Valencia with even better weather than what we left. It was 28 degrees C, which is like 70-80 F and we were hot walking around the city. Almost forgot it´s February! We went to an art museum and watched the locals play soccer on a hot Sunday afternoon on sand fields. It was a day of walking all around the city and getting supper and late night dessert at outdoor cafes. The next day we went to a local market and then visited Valencia´s cathedral where authorities say the Holy Grail, the cup Jesus used at the Last Supper, is held. Then we sat at an outdoor cafe and drank fresh fruit smoothies, horchata and took in sun...we actually got sunburnt! Did I say we have the life?? After ... read more

We continue on the road from the overlook just east of Port de Pollenca. The road down to Platja da Formentor is much like other secondary roads we've travelled across--small guardrail, two thin lanes (one for each direction), lots of curves and lots of steep drops. As we "bottom out" just near Platka da Formenta, the road becomes straight and cuts through a forest. Emerging from the forest, one finds themselves several hundred meters above the ocean, again with steep cliffs. The next 11 kilometers gives a roller-coaster enthusiast a good adrenaline rush. After 11 kilometers of Bethany wearing out the "oh-s#!t handle" and hogging the middle of the road whenever possible, we arrive at the lighthouse at Cap de Formentor. This lighthouse is on the last windswept pinnacle of this stretch of granite protrusions. Its ... read more

WELCOME TO MY WEBLOG. This is a first in a continuing series of posts of my travels throughout Europe. Often accomodating me will be my lovely and talented wife, Bethany and, on certain occassions, Finnegan, our 9-month old Collie. We currently live and work in Giessen, Germany, about 45 minutes north of Frankfurt. Bethany and I just returned from a weekend Mallorca (sometimes Majorca)--an escape from otherwise dreary Giessen. The weather was beautiful--probably 60 degrees with lots of sun and few clouds. We were in Mallorca from early Saturday morning until late Sunday night. We flew out on an "o-dark-thirty" flight from Cologne on HLX--an airline now high on my list of the low-cost variety--and landed at about 0830. We walked past the rental car stands. This is a big mistake if you are visiting Mallorca ... read more
