Europe » Spain » District of Madrid February 7th 2005

Ah, Madrid! We finally finished our Intensive Language classes and we left for Madrid on the 5th of February. That day we took a walking tour and saw the sights....more people and lights than usual because of the Carnaval festivities (their celebration up to Lent). We were surpised that much was not open for a Saturday night, but we attributed it to the rain and the cold weather. So, we found lots of ´hole in the wall¨ places where we got ice cream and sangria. The next day we went to Palacio Real, or the Royal Palace. It is only used for ceremonial events, so no one lives there, but we got to the the beautiful tapestries and artworks. Laura kept kidding me about JFK having possibly visited several times.... After a nice siesta, we went ... read more

We did a day trip to a mountain town called Ronda that had been built during the Spainish Civil War and I think Ronda was probably my favorite day trip. I absolutely loved the town square, as you'll see in the pictures its beautiful. Just the architecture, statues and cafe's in the centre were amazing. I definetly like the concept of town squares-very friendly and a strong sense of community. Any way, from my pictures you'll see how nice of a town it is. If there was one downfall, it was that they had a McDonald's located next to a historic building that the government converted into a Hotel (the fact that they had a McD's at all was sad)...... read more

There were 6 of us out of the group of 15 (i think) who drove from Marbella to Barcelona. Apart from getting lost while trying to find a McDonald's (yes, they are everywhere!) the trip to Barcelona was quiet. I was amazed to see how similar the terrain was to Alberta. Besides being able to see the water at times we passed thru mountains and prairie land. It was quite neat though to see all the olive farms and how meticulous the farmers are at keeping their fields. We spent three nights in Barcelona down in what is called the "Gothic Quarter" and I found it to be very interesting and again the architecture was amazing. In Spain there is a festival called the "Three Kings", it is their New Year's festival and every year in ... read more

OK sorry to have been away from the blog for so long, it has been a week full of travel. I left Florence for Pisa then a Night train to Nice, France. It was a terrible choice the train was packed they had 6 people per room ont he train in chairs (3 facing 3) trying to sleep, it was super hot and people had their legs all tied together, I stayed in the hallway until 5:30am then found a cabin that had 3 empty seats I could sleep across. Nice was nice heeehehee I spent the day in the sun by the beach and then went to the trainstation to figure out how to get to and from Chamonix, where I planned to Snowboard. It was impossible to get there and back in a reasonable ... read more

Take note this field trip was compulsary So as many of you know I was lucky enough to be following a degree that sends me to Spain for a week as part of the course. Many of you will now be beginning to question whether I ever actually have to do any work as i've just come back from 4 months in Canada at Uni? Anyways I had to catch the bus at 6am on Sunday morning from the uni so got up early to have my shower and when it came to getting out I discovered the lock had jammed and I was locked in. Having no way of escaping I begun to think I may never escape and stood for about 20mins panicking that i'd miss my trip screaming for help before eventually ... read more

That´s right...I went hiking. Laura and I signed up and didn´t know what to expect, but while we´re doing things out of our comfort zone already, we figured, why not?! It was absolutely worth it though. The hills were steep at points, but the exercise felt great and the cold morning air was only refreshing as we looked over and saw the Sierra Nevadas to our side. Though we went on a slightly cloudy morning, the clouds made the hills and mountains look that much more beautiful. Now we´re catching up on our e-mails and ready to spend the rest of the day relaxing and hanging out with friends at night---this is the life! One week of class left, which will probably be the longest week of our lives (the classes are a little monotonous by ... read more
