Marty, Mr Electronic Superstar, has been given the opportunity to be a member of the Swiss America’s Cup Team, Alinghi, working from Valencia until mid 2007. So where do ya think the first place in Spain was going to be that I would visit? Friday off work, and out to Gatwick I go. A very uneventful plane ride later, I land at the sunny little airport to find Marty awaiting my arrival, having taken time out of his busy schedule. Off we toddled to the Tryp Oceanic, the hotel that Alinghi were housing him in. Very nice place, with great views of some of the newer, very cool, buildings. Marty shot back to work while I set off on my own to explore the city. Few photos and a good wander later, we met up back ... read more

Hey all, It´s Pia once again -- Liz sends her apologies and promises to update next, but she is currently shaking and delirious from a combination of lack of food, sleep and general coherency. But she´s okay, don´t worry, guys (especially parents). So anyway, we ended up spending about a week in Morocco, the majority of it in Marrakesh. We did a bit of wandering around the town, but for the most part we hit up the souqs in the medina every single day, where we were constantly harassed by calls of "India, India? Namaste!" (me), "nice", "the most beautiful girls in the world" (sung, no less), and also "fish and chips" which we at first thought was some sort of reference to Liz´s glaringly white skin, but later realized was street slang for hash. Aside ... read more

Hello and welcome to Mark and Gills travel journal. Apologies to all who expected this site to be running months ago, but as most of you will appreciate we're not the most organised of people! We started our 'journey' in Spain, spending 4 weeks in Algodonales, in the south, and then travelling around the coast for 2 weeks. While in 'Algo' we spent 3 weeks with Fly Spain (in conjunction with Lijar Sur - Spanish school), and qualified (thanks Rob and José) with a 'Para-pro 3' paragliding pilot rating, (equivalent to elementary and club pilot in England for anyone interested). For anyone considering paragliding we'd recommend this region of Spain and the school. Set in the Grazelema national park with 3,500 ft mountains, the flying is amazing. We completed our course with a number of breath ... read more

Our hostel in Barcelona left something to be desired. The girl at the front desk told us there was absolutely NO alcohol allowed and later we saw her drinking wine out of the bottle on the job. We ended up in a room with four boys who, from what we could tell, slept 24 hours a day so our windowless room smelled like dirty boys feet. Also the hostel advertised that it was located 100 meters from the beach, we walked for an hour before we found it. But eventually we did find it and thats when Barcelona started to get better for us. Our roommate from London, Ksenya (the K is silent) met us and will be traveling with us for the next week. On Thursday we walked along the main pedestrian mall La Rambla, ... read more

Our first flight is from Malaga to Heathrow then on to New York. Then an early morning flight to San Jose, Costa Rica. We made friends in Valencia! It was the first place that we couldn´t find a cheap hotel so we had to go for a hostel. We checked into Indigo youth hostel and while chatting with the girl at the front desk we came to find out that she and her husband had opened it just 6 days before! They have traveled all over and decided they wanted to open a place for backpackers that was clean and friendly and they succeeded! It was the most comfortable atmosphere of any hostel we´ve stayed in yet. We also made a friend in our room who was there visiting someone who goes to school in the city. So we got guided tours from a semi-local. We went to a small bar that we never would have found on our ... read more

Hi All- We spent this weekend on our first out of the UK trip, Barcelona! Since I studied in Spain 3 years back, I've been dying to go back. So, since it was my birthday and I got to pick the destination, we went and had a great time. We lucked out and stayed in a really great hostel (the Sun and Moon) right on Las Ramblas, which is kind of the main drag there, full of shops, street performers, etc. We ate tapas and paella, drank Sangria, went down to the beach, and went to see some awesome sights. I think my favorite was Guell Park, which is a park dedicated to Gaudi and is said to be Gaudi's architexture in garden form. It was beautiful and we took tons of pictures. (Kia-it reminded me ... read more

Hola! Liz again. Ahhh... Granada. Take Canada, add a ´gr´, increase the Muslim population, and crank up the heat. Oh, also turn up the awesome. This is where we are. The remainder of our time in Valencia was spent in perpetual relaxation, punctuated every day at 2:00 by a chaotic fireworks show. Right now, Valencia is preparing for their major fiesta, called Las Fallas, which is basically a week of hanging out in the streets, drinking, smoking, dancing, watching fireworks, burning effegies and not sleeping. It´s about a week away, so every afternoon the plazas erupt into a cacophony of firecrackers, marching bands and what sounded like bombings -- Then the flood of people would go back home for their siesta, and Pia and I went back to sitting around, drinking cafe con leche and feeling ... read more
