We departed Lluc headed for Port de Pollenca, where we planned on finding accomodations for the night. The drive was down an extremely windy road, much like the highway we traversed to get to Lluc. This does provide for a lot of beautiful vistas, even if they come on sharp corners with heavily-dented guard rails that pitch over thousand-plus foot high cliffs that cause my wife to grab the "covert oh-s#!t handle" (the one that's attached to the armrest in the door). The fading light provides some nice orange hues on the high rock walls of the Serra de Tramuntana. We arrive in Port de Pollenca with the days last light and "pahk the cah". Our first mission is to find a room, which we do at Hostal Corro, on the main drag that leads into ... read more

After leaving Madrid by bus, we got into Barcelona on the 10th after meeting some travelers from Israel. We had very interesting conversation, which helped the 7 hour bus ride pass quickly. After arriving in Barcelona early evening, we got a hostel right off of Las Ramblas (the famous 1 km street that runs to the sea) and walked outside for the first time without our winter coats! It was harder to understand signs though because they speak Catalán, a mix of Spanish and French. We ended up grabbing a cheap supper at a grocery store consisting of a baguette (wheat and warm!) and cheese and ate at a nearby cafe. The next day we set out on a tourist bus that took us all over the city, allowing us to get on and off ... read more

I got to Madrid Friday morning and walked around Plaza de Espana for a while before I headed to my hostel. After I dropped off all my stuff, I walked over to Palacio Real, walked through the surrounding gardens and checked out the Catedral de nuestra senora de la Almudena. Then to the post office (its more like an old palace) and the botanical gardens next to the Prado, and then a few hours in there. It was odd because people are allowed to take pictures in the Prado, so a whole bunch of tourists would have their pictures taken in front of famous paintings. Saturday I stumbled upon Templo de Debod, which is a 2200 year old Egyptian structure given to Spain in 1968 as a thank you for saving some building from a flood ... read more

Ask nearly anyone to tell you what they know about Barcelona the least common denominators you usually always get are the Summer Olympics (Photos Coming) and that there is a church that’s still under construction more that a hundred years after work started, and if the person is exceptionally knowledgeable they may give you the architect name (Guadi) and the name of the church (La Sagrada Familia). Aside from the thought of warmer weather I was drawn to Barcelona to see firsthand Guadi’s work, including the Sagrada Familia. I was not disappointed on either account. The following photos are just a few of the multiplicity of snapshots I took of the basilica. The building is very much a construction site. Tower cranes picking loads, manlifts zipping up and down, the smell of fresh concrete strong in ... read more

I made it to Madrid Friday night, in time for a late dinner with Sole and her "hermanos". We spent Saturday around madrid, and headed to Lisbon Sunday AM. Lisbon is a very nice city with a town feel, very few tall buildings etc. Sunday night was the Superbowl and the HardRock cafe was showing the game. It was a good game, but I did miss seeing all the newest commercials. They had one very funny one for the Megane, it is a car with a protruding backend, so they showed clips of the car and peoples but while playing "shaking that ass" (I think they could do a second commercial using a certain favorite ballad of Sir Mixalot) The last day we spent in glorious sun on the coast, and even reached the western most ... read more

Wednesday afternoon I flew into Girona, which is about an hour bus ride from Barcelona. I wandered around Barcelona trying to find my hostel (and had an overly friendly Spaniard ask if I was looking for him). After dropping off my bags I took a stroll up La Rambla (walkway through the main part of town that starts at the sea) and up to Palaca de Cataluna, grabbed some food and headed back to the hostel. Thursday I walked the opposite way on La Rambla and down to the mirador de Colom (Columbus monument that points the wrong way) and went up it - there were some amazing views. I walked down La Rambla de Mar and took some pictures of the harbor and walked down the beach. Then to the parc de la ciutadella where ... read more

New Note to Readers posted April 2008. This particular entry has had a lot of hits. Please submit a comment noting how you found this link. Thanks..... The following photos are a small sequential selection from my hike to and from Olympic Hill in Barcelona. Not much was happening twelve years after the Olympic flame was extinguished. A large convention of British real estate agents was meeting at the indoor basketball arena where the best basketball team ever assembled played, the “Dream Team”. Those were the days that sport starts still had a shred of decorum. I think that I’ve mentioned this before but I’m slatted to go to London in 2012 for the summer games, perhaps I’ll be living in London by then. Should be more interesting being in an Olympic city while the games ... read more

Yesterday we had a free day in Madrid and spent it at the Prado (a famous art museum), walking through Parque del Retiro (the biggest park in Madrid) and hanging out in the city. We finally had decent weather...in the 50s with sunshine! We also went to Corte Inglés (the main department store in Spain) and bought chips and salsa for lunch...something we all had been craving and ate them in a plaza. We did a little shopping and went to watch one of our friends get her nose pierced. After seeing all they have to do to put a hole in your nose, my desire to get one is gone (yes, mom and dad, you can breathe...I´m not going to get one). We spent the night in the hotel hanging out since we walked ... read more
