We are off to Seville! We departed from Madrid’s Atocha train station, traveling to Seville via the high-speed AVE train. We went first class, which was a fun experience, and included in our ticket cost was meal service, including wine. It took us only a short 2.5 hours to get from Madrid to Seville. We arrived in Seville and had a short cab ride to our hotel. The Hotel Simon was formerly an 18th century mansion and is decorated with period antiques, has a charming inner courtyard, and is located a block away from the cathedral in a very central location. With the afternoon still free, we took a cab to the northern Seville area to visit the Basilica de la Macarena. We got there just in time for siesta closing, so decided upon a refreshment ... read more

The weather was very warm today and the sky was very blue. We got up early and went to the train station and just barely made it onto the train to Figueres. We got there and walked around lost for awhile looking for the Dali Museum. We finally found it and it was a lot of fun. I am so happy I got to go -- I've been looking forward to it for months. There was a lot of his ink doodles/sketches that were impressive and his paintings looked fabulous in person. So rich and much better than prints :) It was cool that Dali designed this place while he was still alive (he's burried there now). I had a good time. We got back to Barcelona and to our hostal late, and took nice showers. ... read more

Back into France via the Camargue and Aigues Mortes. A chance to explore the area before continuing to Antribes and the French Riviera. Travel day today. For some reason Melissa and I decided to get up at 5.30 so we'd have time to have showers and repack before breakfast. Ended up being ready way too early, so we went for a walk to the beach to try catch the sunrise. I jumped the fence, which I later realised I wasn't supposed to do. The sand was freezing so the water was warm by comparison. Had Spanish omlette for breakfast and packed the coach, then headed off at about 8am. First service stop was at the same autogrill we stopped at on the way in. Drove past the Pyraneese, and had our lunch stop at a ... read more

Our tour of the city sights takes in Gaudi's Art Nouveau Cathedral, and the 1992 Olympic Games complex. Stroll along the Ramblas, shop for Lladro porcelin and Majorica pearls, eat tapas and check out a Flamenco evening. Nutella pancakes for breakfast! Had a driving tour of Barcelona, which is the capital of Catalonia, which is an area of Spain. Drove up Montjuic and saw the 1992 Olympic stadium. Saw the giant torch that they guys missed with the bow and arrow at the opening ceremony. Went to see Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's church he started building in 1882 which is still being built today. Went to a leather/porcelin/majorica pearl shop called Mestrepiel. Walked through the gothic quarter and saw the cathedral and Catalan Government building, and the steps where Columbus brought back food from the new ... read more

Today we visit Madrid’s Palacio Real (the Royal Palace), built in the 18th century, which is conveniently only a couple blocks away from our hotel. For me the exterior of the palace, its architecture and decor and its viewpoint of Madrid, was the most interesting thing. We of course wandered through the interior rooms that were open to the public, but while nothing like here at home in the States, once you’ve seen one palace you’ve seen them all?.... We see the several rooms with overwhelmingly gaudy décor, including the state rooms as well as the private rooms, and the music room with it’s collection of rare Stradivarius instruments (that was cool, I’ve never seen one before), and the royal pharmacia. It just mostly makes us happy that we never had to live in these quarters, ... read more

Today was really nice. The weather was gorgeous (and warm) and I just had a good time. We checked out of our lame hotel and took the Metro into the main area - Placa Catalunya/La Rambla. La Rambla is a BIG street, so we figured we could find something. We are staying off the main street in the Hostal Rembrant. It only costs 35 euro a night, and it's better than the last place -- we even have a small balcony! After dumping our stuff off we went and had lunch at Les Quinze Nites - a nice restaurant where we split Paella. It was really good. The Sangria we had was alright, but it hit me very quickly ;) Then we took the Metro up a bit and walked to Parc Guell. It was pretty ... read more

So we're finally here!! Our train got in at around 9:50 p.m. and we walked to the first hotel we saw (a one-star ghetto place that costs too much). I'm looking forward to laying down and letting my feet unswell. Tomorrow we're going to go into the main part of Barcelona and look for a better place to stay, as well as look around. The temperature is much warmer here - it's a nice change. ... read more

Since we booked our trip to the Canary Islands in Januray, we never thought April 20 would come! But, it finally did, and the week was amazing! Laura, Natalie and I left Granada the night before and took an overnight bus trip to Madrid, where we waited at the airport for our time to board our flight. By 3 pm that afternoon, we were checked into our hotel, only 150 meters from the ocean, and were sitting next to the pool soaking in the rays of the Canaries. Next to the coast of Africa, we knew the sun was a bit stronger than we were used to so sunscreen was a necessity, something Natalie and I would learn later! The first night we were there, after traveling for 24 hours without much sleep, we went to ... read more

This is our first full day in Spain, and what a full day it ends up being! Unfortunately, I'm still sick, but damn it, I'm not about to miss out on the Prado! After a good night's rest and a stop at the corner Starbucks....I know, I know....we head out to walk to the Prado. Along the way we come to the Puerta del Sol, the square central to Madrid's famous sights. We pass by the governor’s office (the large red and white building in the picture), the courthouse, and take the obligatory picture of the city's symbol, the bear and the strawberry bush. We pass several fabulous looking bakeries and the 'Museo del Jamon' which is packed with ham lovers - of which there are many in Spain. We find the Prado after a bit ... read more

Continuing south we stop at the aquaduct of Pont du Gard then head to the Spanish border and Barcelona. Had to get up at 6 today for our long travel day. Left the chateau at 7.45 for our drive to Spain. Stopped at an autogrill in an area where they make nougat, then at Pont du Gard, a Roman aquaduct built in 77AD. Amanda leant me her copy of Dan Brown's Angels and Demons, so far it's very similar to DaVinci Code, but I like it. That made the time fly, and by the time we got to the campsite at 6.30 I was a third of the way through. I'm rooming with Melissa, and the cabins are cool except we don't have our own bathrooms. The campsite is right at the beach, and we ... read more
