7thDecember LANZAROTE – Arrecife, Canary Islands Decided not to do a organised tour today, but rather, would explore the local area with John and Jill who used to live here. (well on the other side of the island). First things first….a café for free wifi…and very strong coffee. A nice little town to explore, plenty of shops if you wanted and things not badly priced as it’s all tax free. We didn’t have long here, so spent the time just walking around looking and enjoying the company. The landscape is very volcanic here, but apparently in the middle of the island is rainforest. Will be nice to come back and explore further one day. 8th December TENERIFE – Santa Cruz, Canary Islands Had our own explore around today, not far to walk into town – wanted ... read more

La Palma is a great island for walking. The walks can be tough and strenuous in the mountains but there are some easier trails near the coast and through the forests. We did some walks ourselves using the buses to get from a to b but found that the guided walking organised by Natour was excellent. We met people from different countries, the guides were multi lingual, the walks very interesting and of course it was easy to get from and to our hotel at the start and at the end of the walks. Our walks in the forest near Los Tilos and to the mountain springs through 13 water tunnels were enjoyable. We also walked along the coast near Puerto Espindola and San Andres and visited Playa de Nogales.... read more

Geo: 41.6676, 2.23733La Palma, officially known as San Miguel de la Palma is the most north westerly of the Canary Islands. It is a beautiful green island, the capital of which is Santa Cruz de la Palma, which is where we docked. It is only a short walk from the ship to the town which is a delightful place to stroll. There are lovely houses with balconies and beautiful wooden doors all along the Avenida Maritima and along the small cobbled streets behind the front. It takes a maximum of 2 hours to stroll around and see all the sights. At the end of the esplanade is the Castillo de Santa Caterina, a 17th century small fortress. From here you turn up into the town to see a full timber replica of Columbus 'famous ship, the ... read more

Geo: 28.2893, -16.5557No official tours booked today as we had docked at Santa Cruz in Tenerife and had arranged to meet Wanda, Stefan's sister. We walked the long walk from the ship into town and went round the side streets and main street looking for a restaurant to book for lunch. All we could find initially were little cafes. Eventually back on the front we found a nice one. Wanda and friend James who had driven her up arrived at the War Memorial where we had arranged to meet and off we went to "Olympo" a restaurant on Plaza Candelaria. The staff are friendly, prices reasonable and food good but not as good as on the ship. We opted for Paella as that is one thing we haven't had on the ship so far. The rain ... read more

Geo: 28.0997, -15.4134Lanzarote is the first of the islands which we shall be visiting in the Canaries. The ship arrived at Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote mid morning, so as soon as it docked we found a taxi to take us to the Cesar Manrique Foundation which was founded by the artist who was born here. He took the volcanic landscape and cacti to be his inspiration for the building and garden. He used the lava "bubbles" which are like linked caves to become part of the art work as well as exhibiting several of his works in the museum. It is a small but delightful place to visit. Our taxi was waiting to take us back into town, which is a typical small Spanish town with marinas and bars along the waterfront. At least it ... read more

It was a long, winding and steep drive from the coast. We passed through different levels of vegetation and the clouds before reaching the island summit. The Roque de Los Muchachos is 2,426m high. The scenery is spectacular. The whole island can be seen and the distant islands of Tenerife and La Gomera. The jagged cliffs around the edge of the Caldera de Taburiente are very impressive. Our guided walk today with Natours walking group followed a route up and down along a section of the mountain peaks. There were numerous photo opportunities. There are several international observatories to study outer space and the stars in the night sky. The air is so clear and there is minimal light pollution in La Palma so this wonderful location is ideal for the stargazers. The day visit to ... read more

We used the local buses to tour around the island. We visited Santa Cruz and then onto Los Sauces on one journey. We also used the buses to get to Los Llanos, Puerto Tazacorte Puerto Naos and Fuencaliente. Buses are reasonably frequent and fares were 1.37Euro up to 8km and 2.10 Euro over 8km. Not bad at all! The roads are steep and tortuous winding up and down the mountainsides. The scenery is stunning. Santa Cruz to Los Sauces took about 40 minutes on the bus along winding roads, through tunnels with great views of the coastline far below the road. From Los Sauces we enjoyed a walk down a very steep hill to San Andrés. There was some wonderful scenery including the mountains, the sea and coastline and the farmland with many banana plantations. Santa Cruz is sited on the slopes of a volcanic crater. It was an important port in the Spanish empire. The main street is a pedestrian precinct with many historic houses and residences. The Iglesias de El Salvadore sits in the Plaza de Espana. On the shoreline there are the Casas de Los Balcones, old houses with lovely wooden balconies. Calle O Daly leads North towards the replica of Christopher Columbus ship. Many cruise ships visit Santa Cruz but these do not detract from the port and the numerous bars and restaurants add to the atmosphere. We walked from Los Cancajos to Santa Cruz then wandered around the hilly streets and had coffee and cake.... read more

, We flew from Manchester UK to a small rock in the ocean. The airport for La Palma is small, we are quickly outside in the sun and the transfer to our hotel takes 5 minutes! There is a peaceful, isolated feeling here. Just the noise of the waves crashing onto the dark sandy beaches of Los Cancajos our resort for 2weeks. We are by the sea with towering mountains in the distance and we can see the port of Santa Cruz. The temperature Is very pleasant around 25c. Not bad for November. Our hotel Hacienda San Jorge has a wonderful garden with lots of different trees and shrubs. This surrounds a lovely swimming pool. There is also a resident parrot, some ducks and a family of cats!... read more
