L dostał jeszcze temperatury i Wielkiej Sraczki, a 27.12. rano wylatywalismy. Obudziłam sie wiec dzis na Teneryfie nie wiedząc gdzie tak naprawdę jestem, ... read more

Another volcanic, very rugged island. Great weather and lots of bananas. If one is impressed by all the banana plantations in Madeira, then they should come to Santa Cruz de La Palma. Everywhere one looks there are banana plants. The island's economy depends on this one product. In terms of size Madeira had a population of 235,000 versus La Palma's population of 85,000... read more

Tuesday 22nd December, 2015. Tenerife We docked at Santa Cruz de Tenerife which is in the state of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and one of the capitals of the Canary Islands. It is part of one of the two biggest metropolitan areas in the islands with 423,198 inhabitants, and itself the second biggest city in the archipelago, second to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with whom it shares the status of capital city. We weren't sure how easy it would be to find a car hire place but our worries were unfounded. We met up with Tony and Sheila (accidentally) after breakfast and they showed us the short way to the port gates. They asked us to pass on their best wishes to Angela, Audrey and Hallett (if we were to see her). ... read more

Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » La Gomera December 21st 2015

Monday 21st December, 2015. La Gomera While we were enjoying a posh breakfast in the dining room with one of M's bridge buddies we were joined by Alan. He had come to find out whether there were any repercussions to the fact that we had returned yesterday's car minus a hubcap (we don't know whether it was already missing when we picked it up or not). Anyway cut a long story short Alan and Jan decided to join us for another day of car hire and touring. After breakfast the four of us went to the cruise terminal where there were two car hire desks. We took a queue each and M won so we hired a car from the chica at her window. Once in the car we headed out of San Sebastian towards a ... read more

Sunday 20th December, 2015. La Palma After breakfast we went ashore. It was absolutely tipping it down. We sploshed our way down the quay to the cruise terminal where we found 3 car hire places - all closed as it was Sunday. We asked at the cafe and were told that they might open at 10 am or maybe when the ferry came in. We decided to go and see what was happening in Santa Cruz. It was still raining heavily and we found a small flea market just outside of the port gates. All the stalls were selling a load of second hand tat. The town was closed (Sunday) but the tourist office was open. We went inside and the helpful chica inside called a car hire company for us. It was 38 euros plus ... read more

Wednesday 16th December, 2015. Lanzarote, Canary Islands We had a posh breakfast and then purchased our shuttle bus tickets. We had to wait until shuttle bus 5 (about an hour) before we could even leave the ship. This was very frustrating as we had lots to do and needed to find a car hire place. We were treated to the crew practising and "Abandon Ship" drill while we were waiting- they even closed all the fire doors. Once the bus arrived in Arrecife D leapt like a gazelle from the shuttle in order to be first in the queue in the pop-up tourist office. We were given a map and directions to the nearest car hire office - which was a good walk away. Arrecife has been the capital of Lanzarote since 1852 and has a ... read more

Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » Fuerteventura December 15th 2015

Tuesday 15th December, 2015. Fuerteventura, Canary Islands After a posh breakfast we caught the free shuttle to the port gates and then walked along the seafront at Puerto Del Rosario (Port of the Rosary) which has been the capital of the island since 1860. The town centre is adjacent to the port and everything is within easy walking distance of the quay. We took a photo of a sculpture called "Overseas Luggage" which is a tribute to the round-trip migration phenomenon. It is a testimony of the Majorero who emigrated into the island in other times and that today receives a whole multicultural community. It is a nostalgic sculpture of the traveller and his luggage loaded with memories - M loved it. We found the tourist office who told us where we could find a cafe ... read more

Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » Gran Canaria December 12th 2015

Saturday 12th December, 2015. Gran Canaria, Canary Islands After a posh breakfast we set off to secure ourselves a car for the day. There was an Avis office on the dockside so we decided to try this first to save the walk into town. After queuing for 15 minutes we were quoted a price of 67 euros 35 cents - criminal as we had seen cars in the town from 26 euros. We walked off in disgust and found the 26 euro place. He said we could have a car - but not until Monday! Undeterred we continued to the second place we had seen where Raol hired us a nice little white Seat for 30 euros for the day. We had pretty much decided where we wanted to go - to the north of the ... read more

Friday 11th December, 2015. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands We were woken fairly early to the roaring of the ship's bow thrusters as we docked in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. We went to the restaurant for a posh breakfast before disembarking and going into town. Las Palmas is the capital of the island of Gran Canaria and is known as Las Palmas GC in order to differentiate it from the island of Las Palmas which is also in the Canaries Group. Gran Canaria is a roughly circular shaped island and Las Palmas lies at it's north eastern corner on a spit. Despite its name it is only the 3rd largest of the Canary Islands (about the size of the combined Shetland Islands). Las Palmas GC is the largest city in the Canaries and ... read more

Thursday 11th December, 2015. Depart UK and Embark Braemar, Tenerife, Canary Islands Having spent the night with our friends Rosemarie and Philip in Epsom we were relieved when the pr-booked taxi arrived pretty much dead on time. We had the quickest and smoothest ever check-in at the airport but had to re-pack as both our hold bags were underweight but the cabin bags were over. The flight was 4 and a half hours and we were given a hot breakfast on board. We landed at Tenerife South but were departing from the port of Santa Cruz De Tenerife which is on the North East coast. We were allocated bus 3 for the journey. The landscape was very barren with lots of cacti and desert vegetation. Pretty uninspiring but we will take a closer look when we ... read more
