Sunday, Kathy and I attended Sunday mass the Cocathedral de Santa Maria de La Redonda (now thats a title...how would you like to be the priest and answer the question, "Oh! And where do you work?). The church was built about the 13th century and boasted of an original Michelangelo. Later, we had dinner at a streetside restaurant named Bar_Tolmay. After pointng to several items on the menu that they didnt have, we finally settled on fish and veal. We took a picture of the menu so we could translate it later. Believe me, you don't really want to do that after you have consumed it and paid for it. After some discussion, Kathy and I thought we would try to learn a couple of spanish phrases each day and hopefully would be able to better ... read more

Stayed in a Great B & B in Navia, it was a converted palace with a nice view of the river running thru the city. Traded dinner for lunch at a nice Restaurant in town and was back to the lodging by 5 P.M. ready to catch on some sleep, as the next days walk is long. Today the weather has changed, it is already 80 degrees by 8:30 A.M. going to be a hot one today. The walk is uphill in the beginning but soon turns to flat ground. This is a first for me in Spain, I have never been able to see more than a 1/2 mile in front of me due to the constant ravines. I can see for miles, no more small farms and neat gardens, it is huge pastures or ... read more

Nice B & B last night, nothing special but very comfortable. My trip is prepaid and some of the accommodations offer 1/2 board or dinner when you arrive and breakfast in the morning. This has been problematic because dinner is NEVER before 8:30. I usually arrive by 4pm, then what? No food all day and wait another 4 hours? So, I started asking can I trade dinner for lunch? You basically get the special of the day at the restaurant which a choice of starter (3 choices) and a 2nd plate of meat, fish or pasta. The standard price is 10 euros, that includes beer or wine. The answer is sure, so I have been eating my main meal between 2 to 4pm instead of 8:30 to 10pm. That is working for me. The walk today ... read more

After yesterday not sure it could get any better. I did suffer the worst B & B of the trip though, no heat, no Wi Fi no TV, freezing cold, drafty and I could reach each wall with my wing span, making the room just about 6'6" wide, Tiny room. I had to heat the place up with an ancient hair dryer. The walk, however is a copy of yesterday. Along the coast with ocean views all the way. The Camino wonders on and off a highway that is virtually unused. There are two major highways running Parallel to the road by the Camino, making the road devoid of all cars except a few locals and farm equipment. The Camino take me down to a playa that would be impossible to get to except on foot, ... read more

This day starts with the best breakfast yet, I am the only one in this B & B. but the local folks come here the start their day. All kinds of good stuff to start your day, eggs, french toast, ham cheese, fresh O. J. fruit, toast, home made jam, pastries. The walk is still in what I would call, the Beverly Hills of Spain. What this area must have been like in its prime. The old and sometimes abandoned stone Mansions are so great to see. The rock walls, and iron work around the properties are astounding! There are no highways around, just one lane paved roads and forest trails. This is my very favorite kind of walking. Only nature sounds, cows munching grass, sheep bleating, chickens clucking, geese honking, its perfect walking weather again, ... read more

The walk today was just plain long! Good weather, great temp, just long and with lots of assents and descents. The walk up Alto de la Cruz was a real burner almost 2,000ft, I keep thinking that I have got to get out of the mountains soon! How can it be that there seems to be no end to these ravines! Never have I seen this kind of topography in the United States. I am not in pain, the weather is good, so shut up and walk! Walk I did, after 6 hours I can finally see Gijon! Yes, 1-2 hours more should do it. As I close in on the town I pass what looks like some sort of Abby with a huge clock tower, and what looks like a church, need to investigate that. ... read more

Europe » Spain » Asturias » Ribadesella May 21st 2017

Sad to leave the beautiful town of Ribadesella and head into the unknown. I am however determined to seek medical help for the leg and opt for a 2nd bus ride to Colunga. I did put 15K on in the town Ribadesella, it was all flat and included a long walk in the cool ocean water, even with this any down hill walking causes pain. The bus is easy to use and comfortable. It was a short 40 minuet ride to Colunga. Off the bus I head directly to tourist information to get a map and inquire about a medical facility. She tells me there is a clinic just 1K from the tourist office, I get directions and off I go. This is my first experience with ANY medical help outside the U.S., I am a ... read more

The morning starts with rain, but I can see that in the direction I am heading the sky's are clearing. It's not cold the rain is not really bad, the town was small so the Camino was easy to find. Walking without pain is so wonderful, I feel like I am 80% better. Still walking slowly, and the new shoes are helping also. Once again the countryside does not disappoint, small roadways with minor local traffic. As time goes on the clouds begin to separate and more sun appears. Even thou I am used to the beautiful rolling hills, small farms, livestock on the road I still love it. There is a new vista that I have never seen before around every corner, so it's relatively old but new at the same time. On this part ... read more

I awake this day to another sunny warm day, but with a really sore leg. Thats it, I need to do something different its just not right to continue pushing this injury every day. It's not getting better. First thing I do is look at the town on a map which is really cool, it's a medieval town with lots of stores, churches and history and its right on the ocean. I decide its a bus day. I head to a sport shop, I am convinced my shoes are adding to the problem, just not sturdy enough for the Camino. Standard Nike track shoes and not making it. I find a pair of Solomon trekking shoes, wide heel and lots of cushion. I buy them, and throw away my old Nike's. Then on to Pharmacy and ... read more
