26th March After a long, good night’s sleep we woke at 7.30 thinking it was 5.30 as it was so dark. It was just a huge storm cloud that thankfully passed us by. Cathy much better but tired & achy after being ill & prostrate for so long. Sorted ourselves out, paid the bill & set off for Luarca an hour or so West along the coast. We were going to drop in at the supermarket but discovered they all close on a Sunday. The road again was smashing going over viaduct after viaduct & a few tunnels thrown in. I’d read that this site was pretty & the local town nearby of Luarca is probably the nicest little port on this coast so was looking forward to the stay. Arrived at the site which is ... read more

25th March An awful night as Cathy did indeed get worse with an upset tummy ..so as she doesn’t feel up to travelling we’ll be staying another night. Thankfully I’m still alright so far, so I’ll do some chores & dodge the rain showers. I had lunch in the cafe bar which Google translate said was a chicken skewer but it turned out to be a thin breaded chicken slice in nice local bread with salad...& cubed potato ‘chips’...filled a hole. Did all the washing in the afternoon which was expensive (but the machines were huge, almost industrial) & whilst loading & unloading ‘chatted’ to a German couple who have been touring since Christmas- I think that they had saved all their washing for this site. Discovered that my German is on a par with my ... read more

24th March So, had an early night & slept soundly, woke late & read the news in bed with tea. We were going to jump on a bus to Gijon but Cathy didn’t feel too good so after brunch we walked to the supermarket for a couple of bits, around 6 kilometres round trip. No-one spoke a word of English in there, I bet they’re fluent in Spanish in Sainsbury. Whilst we walked over we could see what we thought was the tower & roof of a church but when we rounded a corner the building was gigantic. Turns out that this place is the Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura & is rather splendid. Didn't visit as Cathy was deteriorating. Nearby was another huge building which was a University hospital on the scale of the JR ... read more

21st March Feeling guilty for leaving Charlotte with a very sick little Arthur but then an uneventful journey down to Fareham for a night’s stay before an early start to the ferry. 22nd March After a stormy night up early & off to the ferry terminal. We obviously looked shifty as we were directed to the customs shed for a ‘search’! The Customs woman was enormous, asked for a step to get in the side door - which is no more than 15” off the ground. Tough, we don’t have one.. She couldn’t fit through the door but just made it sideways despite her enormous attributes. We keep a spare wheel in the area near the door & she couldn’t step over it! She soon gave up after a couple of cursory questions & opening of ... read more

Europe » Spain » Asturias » Picos de Europa National Park March 23rd 2017

23rd March Disturbed night sleep with the ship pitching all over the place & the fittings creaking all night. Still, this ferry is much better & quieter than the ones we used to use 20 odd years ago. Just had our petit dejeuner & now sat in the reading lounge which is very comfortable & from here I can see that I did leave the handbrake on Billy. Now we’ve arrived, an easy disembarkation & port exit. Within 500 yards Cathy had the first run in with the Dyson & we took a wrong turn haha! Only a couple of minutes detour though... 160 km drive to the first site near Gijon along a very quiet coastal motorway at the base of the mountains most of which were Picos de Europa. The windy weather we’d sailed ... read more

Gijon Spain North of the Portuguese border, Spain presents a greener, more liveable and picturesque vista that the centre region we traversed from Burgas via Salamanca to the Algarve coast. One place in northern Spain that stood head and shoulders above others was Gijon. We stayed an extra day. Most of Spain’s towns have an agricultural industry to serve. This one is different; it’s a tourist and holiday town. But unlike so many resort towns where everything is expensive, Gijon offers good value. Our campsite was right on the beach, adjacent to an expansive green lawn shaded by sprawling trees and park furniture. Even though the Spanish tend to fill their camping areas to capacity, and then add a bit, getting to the crowded end of cosy, the green park space balanced the atmosphere. It was ... read more

The break of day at just after 8am revealed another great day for sightseeing and we have enough ideas to do locally all with a 10km radius part of which will be a good walk down to the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula. We decided to save the walk until the early afternoon so we can have lunch at one of the 3 or 4 bar/cafes in the small village of Ovinana about 1km away and then carry on down to the lighthouse. The owner of the apartments had suggested Cudillero as a good place to visit. His English was reasonable but from his description we weren’t sure exactly what was there to sightsee. However we took him at his word and headed off down the local road avoiding the highway on this occasion. ... read more

Spring is the same the world over. One minute it is warm and pleasant and the next, cold and wet. And that is exactly what happened overnight. The fine clear skies of yesterday have given way to low clouds and light rain and a subsequent drop in temperature from 25C to 5C.Bit like being in Central Otago! Our track takes us further west today and if we followed the E70 we would be there, without stops, in just over 2 hours. But, the BBA V3 doesn’t do highways if there is an alternative so Gina will have work cut out today to ensure we stay off the E70 as much as possible so we can see the countryside as we go. Skirting around Santander we headed for the coast bypassing the ancient cave drawings at Altamira ... read more
