Somehow I am getting the day numbers mixed, this is day 17 on the Camino. Can't wait to get out of this town really nothing here, industrial and dirty looking. I am just across the street from the bus station and I have a strong urge to just go get on the bus and get to the next location without further damage to the injury. I examine the map that shows distance, elevation, number of towns, etc., and it looks like if pull up lame I can catch a bus ride along the way. The trail out of town is an immediate incline, helping the already tender leg. At the top of the hill there is an older Gentleman who stops me and asks me why I am limping. I show him my wrapped leg and ... read more

After a lovely, farm-animal- and countryside- filled FEVE train ride from Arriondas, I arrived in Oviedo. It’d been a long day, of walking 14 km with a backpack, riding 2 buses, and riding a train, along with layover times. I stopped for some groceries at Corte Ingles (the only place I found still open in the evening when I arrived) because the next day was Good Friday, when all the stores would be closed. Then I headed to my AirBnB. I was only slightly detoured by a small Easter procession. I was half-planning to rest a bit and then go back out around midnight to see more processions (called Madrugá), but once I’d had a shower, I knew I needed some rest. My mind was really relaxed from my time in the mountains, but my body ... read more

25th April Well the forecast was correct & it rained in the night on & off & we woke to rain too. Plenty of vans have left again probably to head south or for the ferry. The rain eased so we walked down to town to the shop for something to do in the heavy cloudy weather. On the way we had 4 frights – large/guard dogs barking through gates, fences & jumping up at walls...Anyway, in the town we found a little shoe shop that also sold some hiking gear & we bought 2 extending walking poles with pointy ends, protected with rubber ferrules. We feel a little better now. It started to drizzle again just before we arrived back. Remember when I mentioned big eucalyptus? Check out the one photograph. So, not much to ... read more

24th April Spoke to the lady from the mountains last night; they apparently had sold their house last year, bought a big van & toured Europe for a year & were about to go home. They wanted 3 weeks at home, go off again, go home, sell the van, go to Oz next year then come home & then they’d ‘probably’ have to go back to work again. I asked where they would live. The reply was we have 2 grown children... quote, pay back time! Looked at the forecast last night & it seems that today was going to be the last hot day before some mixed weather for a while so we decided to do some washing in the morning to ensure getting it dry. Once we had hung it out we jumped on ... read more

Having successfully made it to Las Arenas de Cabrales from Cangas de Onís, my next task was to get a taxi. After getting off the bus, though, I didn’t see a taxi right away. There was, however, one other traveler, a middle-aged Asian woman that I’d heard speaking English before. I hoped maybe she was also going in my direction and we could split a taxi. But she gave me better news—there was a bus running (only for Semana Santa, and maybe peak summer season--not year-round)! My hostel had told me there was no bus when I’d emailed them a month before, but they were wrong. It was another beautiful bus journey past mountains, with fewer curves than the bus trip up to the Lakes of Covadonga. Between Covadonga and Poncebos, I would choose to return ... read more

22nd April Yes, confirmation email back from the police lady this morning, Chilly night last night with Cathy hogging the quilt for a change. No idea what temperature but it was only 9* when we left. Packed up for a reasonable time & away via the little shop for bread & away east to the motorway through the National Park which was very pretty. The motorway north took us onto the plains which were very plain... & flat, just mostly rough scrubland & not much else except for lots of birds of prey. Then we crossed a small viaduct over a small river & every thing just changed – green, verdant agriculture, the change was just so clear. Must be different soil & not just irrigation. The mountains north came into view which looked impressive with ... read more

23rd April Happy St. George’s Day And yes, Mr. & Mrs. Boring from Goring (Chester) have left, hooray! We had a lie in & then had breakfast outside in the warming morning although there was a heavy dew. A few people left & a few arrived including a couple who had stayed at the site in the mountains. Off on the bikes to Cudillero & the chap on reception told us the last part was very steep. It was all downhill & about 3km, the first part a gentle descent, then steep & then suicidal – we got there within 10 minutes with our brakes glowing red...I lied about the last bit. The street got narrower & narrower & then opened out onto a big area full of tables & chairs for the very busy restaurants. ... read more

I spent Easter break doing a tour of Asturias, the province to the east of Galicia. The whole year, I’d hoped to visit Asturias and Cantabria. I didn’t make it to Cantabria because once I started investigating Asturias, I found that there was so much to see there. Challenges of the trip: I was going to be traveling alone. And without a car. Traveling alone at this point isn’t weird for me. I’m getting used to having total autonomy and not feeling weird about being alone. It is hard to plan hiking or to go to more rural places without knowing how safe it is, though. Traveling alone means you have to be a lot more prepared than if you were traveling with someone. If you’re with someone, generally your attitude is like, “No problem. We ... read more

28th March We woke to beautiful sunrise which was around 8am as we’re quite aways west. The forecast is for 21* today which maybe so but there is still a fresh chill in the air. Off on the bikes again to town this time with passports & we bumped into the Scots couple from the site. They told Cathy of a shell shop they’d been to – I fell out with them on the spot. Cathy homed into the shop like an Exocet & even her face fell when the chap had wrapped her purchases & said €25... €25 for two shells! They may be pretty but blimey; deffo not talking to the Scots couple again. So with that magnificent purchase we forgot about menu de dias by the harbour as we were now skint & ... read more

27th March After a late start & brunch we went off on the bikes to Luarca which is only a mile from the site. The little town is lovely, set in a cove with a small harbour & marina of sorts, just like the infamous Cornish fishing village. Rather than taking the road Cathy fancied taking the paved footpath down to the town. Big mistake. It was 1 in 3, included steps & hairpins – brakes on overtime & Cathy very scared but we made it. Had a mooch about & went into a bank to change money but they required a passport which we didn’t have. There’s a narrow ‘promenade’ around the bay which I cycled around passing an old chap drying himself off after a swim..in the Atlantic...in March. Without me realising it Cathy ... read more
