Geo: 42.5051, 14.1389The trip today went quicker than expected. We traveled Northeast across Italy towards Pescara and out destination Montesilvano which is a seaside town. The journey took us through the central mountainous area which judging by the road signs and the nature of some of the towns is a winter ski area. The temperature even now was only 10 degrees for part of the journey but we are now back into the upper 20's near the water. The town has a very attractive beach which is likely packed on weekends and during the summer. Walked along part of the beach and a few of the streets around the town area. It appears that this is a more affluent area judging by the types of homes and lots of hotels. Our hotel is a smaller hotel located ... read more

Hello to everyone down under, this is a very short hello as I am on a time frame and I know you want some photos as well! Its been virtually impossible to find the time and a computer with internet on it to do the regular blogs I was hoping to do this trip. Five weeks on the road with another two weeks to go. WE spent 10 days in lovely Era, Italy. Colin's family truly took us under their wing, I believe the most hospitable people I have ever meet. Side by side with Helena and Kara we tackled and weaved the many different request and invitation that were proposed and sometimes demanded on us. Up and down mountains, and up and down and around mountains, left me both sick physically and wanting the flat ... read more

Addio Italia The time has come to bid farewell to “mi casa Italiano” for the last four months. School is over, the play is done, the students are gone and Terry and I are leaving for Paris on Wednesday. It has been an experience I will treasure forever. Not only did I get to visit some amazing places, I learned what life is like in a small Italian town. I will remember fondly the many walks among the olive orchards and the lush vineyards with a spectacular view of mountains in the distance in one direction and the sea in the other. I will laugh at my attempts to converse with salesclerks in Italian and their attempts to understand me. I will remember the taste of the delicious gelato, the seafood, the pasta (oh my god ... read more

Buona Pasque, Happy Easter! It’s been a busy few days here in Lanciano where they do Easter in a BIG way! It began Thursday evening with the parade of men, covered from head to foot in black and wearing medallions displaying a skull and cross bones. One man, the penitent man as I explained last week, walks barefoot in the midst of them bearing a cross. Another group of four men carry a platform with another cross which bears a skull and crossbones. They all carry gigantic candles and the lights on the streets they walk down are turned out and everyone turns out the lights in their houses so the centre of the town is in almost complete darkness. It’s very eerie and so medieval. Another parade takes place on Friday with children and women ... read more

Leaving our little spot we headed off to find Scanno, only to stop in another little village around 5kms away to get some local produce and goodies (vittles was running a little low due to Easter and Italy being closed) they had the best little tomatoes you have ever had and the whole shop was 20E for two large bags of tucker. We found this area to be very camper friendly with heaps of camper parking and another sosta at N41° 45.237 and E13° 59.311, full camper service at a small cost for water, around 3 euro, nice spot by the lake and quiet as well. Heading off further up into the mountains we found the greatest little spot in all of Italy along the pass road from Barrea to Scanno, the drive and scenery is ... read more

Rising bright and early we walked off to catch the bus for our excursion up Mount Vesuvius some 500m from our campsite, the trip we had chosen was a 3 hour journey taking us right to the top of the only active volcano in Europe and one of the most dangerous in the world. First stage was a rattley old bus to the entrance to the National Park and then with the usual Italian mucking around and being issued more tickets only to hand them to the guy standing to the guy who issued them in the first place (they seem to have this proclivity with tickets for everything). Finally settling in to the new flash 4 wheel drive bus it was off up to the summit, we thought. The trip was around 15 mins up ... read more

Not much happening here this weekend. George and Debbie went to a conference in Istanbul so I am here in Lanciano on my own. Spent Saturday morning wandering around the market. They have a market every Saturday morning that takes up much of the downtown area. The vendors set up stalls and sell clothes, house wares, shoes, material, furniture and of course the ubiquitous electronics you see at any flea market. The locals come out to do their Saturday shopping and also go to the fruit and vegetable market for fresh produce. It seems everyone in the town is out and they stay out most of the day shopping, walking and saying hello to one another as they pass on the corso. In the afternoon I went for a walk that Terry discovered when he was ... read more
