Wednesday, November 3rd Hi Everyone, This was the best day of weather since we have been on the cruise. The sun shined all day and there was no rain. We started the day with a tour of the ruins at Pompeii. Pompeii was destroyed by the Mount Vesuvius volcano when it erupted in 79 AD. It is still an active volcano today and we were told by our guide that scientists predict it will experience another major eruption within the next 80 to 100 years. We had a great guide who got us into a few areas where the general public couldn’t go. We saw some relatively new excavations that the general public couldn’t see. There were bath houses, residences, shops and even brothels that had been preserved since the eruption in 79 AD. Next we ... read more

Date Friday 24th September 2010 City Sorrento/ Monte Cassino/ Pescara Climate low 14c - high 23c - fine and sunny Today we packed up and left our lovely Secret Garden. We were headed for Pescara on the East Coast beaches of Italy. On the way we stopped at Monte Cassino to see the Abbey but unfortunately we were a little later than expected and closing time for siesta was at 12.30pm, just minutes away. We had time to quickly poke our heads in and take some photos. The abbey was completely destroyed by bombing in 1944, but was rebuilt to its original design. After having a quick look around at the grounds and in the abbey we drove down the hill to the Polish cemetery. About 1.30pm we were keen to stop for lunch. We thought ... read more

Dear Blog Reader… After a 6 hour train ride from Venice we arrived in Giulianova, Italy. These next few days are about my family history…might be a little boring ;-) but you're welcome to read ... Archaeological findings show that the area around Colonnella, Italy was inhabited since Neolithic times, then in the pre-Roman era on the place there existed a lively commercial and maritime centre, called Truentum, which disappeared in the period of the barbarians' invasions following the fall of the Roman Empire (476 A.D.). It was then reconstructed after the VIII century, and the name appears for the first time in the X century. Colonnella was for a long time under the rule of Ascoli, and later of the Rosales family. And on May 28, 1877, Abramo DiMizio was born in Colonnella. He grew ... read more

For Easter, I finally got a chance to go visit my relatives in San Valentino in Abruzzo Italy, a tiny town in the Appenini mountains in central Italy where my mom was born (Travelblog does not actually have this town listed...showing how small it is). Well, its an absolutely beautiful medieval town that has amazing views wherever you were. Of course, i didnt get there till 10 at night on Thursday because i had a class until 2, and the next available train i could legitimately make wasn't till 5:30--so four hours later i get to Pescara, and then 25 minutes after that arrive in San Valentino. Brief interlude before i get on to describing my weekend, I took an IC (intercity) train for the first time, which pretty much look like harry potter trains and ... read more

Geo: 42.4215, 14.2873Off the ferry and onto the A14 Autostrada, once we found it..With a scribbled map of where my aunties house was we headed into the village of Francavilla. After a couple of laps around the village i decided to ring the house and Uncle & Aunty came and picked us up.It was great to spend the next 6 days with my long lost cousin Robert and his new family. It has been 29 years since i last saw Rob and bugger me if he as all grown up and even has a wife and little tacker of his own.Our time was cut short by an email from UK indicating the Shorty was booked onto a ship that leaves UK on the 25th January, and we needed to have it at the port on the ... read more

Tuesday 20th October Coastal wandering north After putting the lights out in the mobile home last night and getting it fixed, the electrical system seemed to have coped overnight as the heater kept working and we still have power this morning. We do seem to have buggered up the silly two prong power points in the place though as our European plugs converting from our three prong don’t seem to fit these sockets quite so well. We have another magnificent sunrise and beautiful day ahead although we are aware in the forecast that this probably won’t last as we head further north as a rain system is due by tomorrow. We seemed to have spread ourselves far and wide in this little mobile home and it took a while to get everything together and packed into RR ... read more

I spent the last two days laying on the beach. One day in Monterossa, Cinque Terre, on the west coast, and today in Pescara, on the East coast. Bothwere stunning, and HOT. I'm sporting a nice tan. Not much else to say, I leave tomorrow and tonight am going for one last walk in RoMe and have my last gelato. Amazing vacation!! Will post pictures as soon as I get home... read more

... read more

Day Four - May 28, Thursday; Preci, Hotel agli Scacchi Todays walk starts with a transfer to the ancient village of Visso in the Monti Sibillini National Park. From here, you rise steadily to emerge onto grassy moors fringed by rocky peaks where you can sometimes spot deer and foxes. The views are superb and improve as you ascend along the broad spine of Monte Lungo. Later, as you wind gradually downhill towards Preci, you can detour to the cave and chapel of San Fiorenzo, one of many hermits' dwellings in the region (16 km). Anna and I had decided that we were going to do todays hike, no matter what. After our quite delicious breakfast sitting outside in the Courtyard of the Abbey we loaded into a van driven by our Tour Rep, Luca Agostinelli. ... read more

I will repost all of these entries in a week or so with pictures when I get a better interent connection. For now, just use your imagination : ) Most of time here has been spent getting L’Aperegina ready for guests. It took me 3 days to mow all this stupid lawn. And this is hilly, rocky, stick filled terrain. And I was using an electric mower, so it had a cord. I hate lawns. I did more cleaning, cooking, painting, etc. Very domestic, but it feels good to be doing something productive and not have to think much. Friday, people began to arrive, and I became more and more confused. When I talian people get together, they talk even faster, and no one wants to bother translating any it of it. Not that I ... read more
