I spent the last two days laying on the beach. One day in Monterossa, Cinque Terre, on the west coast, and today in Pescara, on the East coast. Bothwere stunning, and HOT. I'm sporting a nice tan. Not much else to say, I leave tomorrow and tonight am going for one last walk in RoMe and have my last gelato. Amazing vacation!! Will post pictures as soon as I get home... read more

The day I left for Venice I had to take an 8 hour train ride to Naples. No fun at all. Very uneventful though, so that was good. I caught up on some reading and took a nap. On the second part of the trip, from Rome to Naples, I set next to a guy I'm pretty sure worked for the mafia. He was completely decked out in an Armani suit and gold chains, and after we talked for a bit, I asked him what he did. He looks at me, winks, and says "Me? I am a beezniss man." Too funny. It's crazy that the mafia actually controls most of what goes on in Naples. All restaurants have to pay kind of a mafia "tax" for protection... And you can't decide NOT to take it. ... read more

I woke up that morning feeling absolutely disgusting... The sore throat turned into a full blown cold which totally sucked. I missed check out time ... 10! But they let me go without paying for another night. There was thunder and lightening outside so I threw on my raincoat, packed my bags, and trekked back to the train station. Cant say I'm going to miss Florence at all. The train ride was fairly uneventful, about three hours, and I slept the entire time. I got to Venice to find the sun shining, and the sky SO blue. When I stepped out of the train station it was kind of like a dream. There was a band playing on the steps of the terminal, and the Grand Canal is right in front of you, the lightest color ... read more

Ugh. Today was freaking nightmarish. First I get harassed on the train and then on the way home our train is over two hours late. BUT I saw the leaning tower of Pisa today ! And ate three cups of gelato... mint, fruit roll up, and chocolate. Amazing. SO... my train incident. Luckily, I was traveling with Evelyn from Ireland at the time so I wasnt alone. We were sitting on the train about halfway to Pisa when two young guys get on at one of the stops. One of them didnt buy a ticket and is going around asking everyone if he can have theres. He comes to us and we both just said no right away, and then he sits across from me and says ooo bella mami, I love you. And hes a ... read more

The day before yesterday Adele from Texas and I signed up for a Tuscany wine tour. It was absolutely worth it. In the morning we met down at reception and once the group was ready we headed for the bus. Our tour guide was Australian-Italian and was studying culinary arts here in Florence. We took a bus 40 minutes into the Tuscan Countryside, Chianti. It was beautiful, and exactly like you imagine it to be... Rolling hills as far as you can see with so many different shades of green. Our first stop was a castle/winery. We had a tour of the grounds, then saw the wine cellar, and then sat down to taste food and wine. Salami and cheeses, toasted bread with olive oil and garlic, and three different types of wine. The guide also ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Siena June 2nd 2009

Jet lag has finally sunk in, and I am exhausted. The last couple of nights Ive been waking up at 4-5 in the morning and have not been able to fall asleep. This morning was the same thing, so I got dressed, came online for awhile to pass the time, and eventually went back upstairs to wake up my roomate (Adele from Texas) to go to Siena. We walked to the bus stop and waited, and waited... and waited. Bus never showed, so we walked across the street to the train station and took the train there instead. I absolutely LOVED Siena. I could spend days there, just exploring the cobblestone streets. Its quite different from Rome and Florence as the architecture is much more mideival and gothic. There are gargoyles everywhere, and statues all around ... read more

Florence is disgusting. I honestly think downtown Vancouver is cleaner. On the walk to my hostel from the train station I saw not one, but TWO piles of what I am absolutely sure was human feces, and everyone was just casually walking over it and hardly giving it a second glance. The streets are littered with garbage and it is absolutely necessary to breathe through your mouth at all times god forbid you step over a grate or pass a small alley. I did go and see the Duomo and .... eh. Inside was breathtaking - and HUGE... But it's not really the prettiest structure I've ever seen. I'm more excited to see Siena and all the gothic architecture. So far - There are only two good things about this place. 1 - The Hostel. So ... read more

I apologize in advance for the lack of punctuation ... Seriously, the keyboards here are ridiculous. Just arrived in Florence an hour ago and am waiting to check into my hostel... Havent done any exploring yet. Yesterday I attempted to get to the colosseum but couldnt find my way in because the TOUR DE FRANCE was going on all the way around it ? It was ridiculous... I saw crowds of people taking pictures of someone and thought.... Ooooh maybe theres someone famous over there ! Nope... Just bikers. I eventually got tired and hailed a cab to drive me back to the hostel... Except most of the streets were closed so I ended up paying like 20 Euros, blahh. Oh well, my feet were thankful. I went for dinner with Heather from Cleveland and ate ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome May 30th 2009

Today was ridiculously busy. My feet are killing me! I walked for 7 hours, and saw : the Trevi Fountain (huge), The Pantheon (Unreal, and my favorite sight so far.... I stood in there and just looked up for a good 10 minutes), Fontana del Tritone, Tempio Adriano, and then made my way across Rome to Vatican City. Now that is jaw dropping. The line up up get into St.Peter's was huge... But absolutely worth it. I went up to the cupola first, the top of the dome some 500 odd stairs later. And it's so odd, toward the top where the dome begins to curve the stairway is super skinny, almost claustrophobia tight, and angled sideway! So you're trying to climb this ridiculous amount of stairs while trying not to fall over. After that I ... read more

First impressions? Flying in, Italy really resembles kelowna from above The sites you see from the train are not a great representation of the city Italians are CRAZY drivers The architecture is brilliant It was quite a trek here... We ended up in Paris for a while, stuck in a bus with 40 other people and they refused to open the windows or doors. Eventually people started banging on the windows and yelling and ... Yeah. I'm glad I can speak French and knew why they were keeping us or else I would have been a little freaked out. When I stepped into the train station at the airport I had a moment of panic when I realized I had no idea what the he'll I was doing, but I figured it out and made it ... read more
