TUESDAY: Started out at Citigroup (specifically the Citibank operations in Ireland) this morning. The managing director was very laid-back and seemed like he was genuinely excited to have us there. We had our meeting in a very nice conference room overlooking the Liffey River that runs through Dublin. Being in a nice corporate conference room with a great view, I thought to myself, "I could get used to this." Next, we walked over to Allied Irish Bank (AIB). Dublin has recently developed an area of town specifically as its financial center, so all of the banks were located within a few blocks of each other. AIB is an Irish-based bank with operations in Ireland, the UK, the US, and Poland. Although our host here didn't seem as enthusiastic as did the Citigroup manager, the talk ... read more

Yeh CAl :P Stop telling stories! hehe.. Well here I am in the beautiful Emerald Isle, have liked what I've seen so far which pretty much consists of what I saw out of the plane window and in the taxi on the way here.. OMG You know that Damien Leith song (you know the guy who won Aussie Idol), it was playing on the radio on my taxi ride to my hostel, I said to the taxi driver, if he popular here and he was like who? hehe guess that answers me question, but yes Aussie Idol songs are played on the radio here, granted it might be cos the guy is Irish but who knows.. And OMG when I went through a booked hostels I specifically said private rooms with ensuites.. Guess what?! I got ... read more

After spending the night at Griffith College (thanks Soren!) we caught a bus to the city center, picked up breakfast and some water for the road and walked over to Paddy's Palace to begin our tour of Southern Ireland. Today's first stop was at the ruines of the castle Dunamase near Portlaoise. It was very windy and though there was not much of a castle left, there was a beautiful church. We jumped off the bus on the side of the road for a quick picture of the Rock of Cashel (impressive outside, not so impressive inside - and not worth the money to go in - according to Gabriel) As we came into Cork County (learning lots of Irish history) we went directly to Blarney Castle to kiss the Blarney Stone and have some ... read more

We had a lecture this morning at Dublin City University about Ireland's economic turnaround in recent years and its future potential. The professor was very interesting and gave us a good understanding of where Dublin has come from, what it did during its "Celtic Tiger" economic turnaround, and where it needs to go in the future. The university treated us VERY well, serving us coffee, tea, and scones this morning during our lecture and then serving us a very good and very big lunch. Next, we went to Enterprise Ireland, which is a semi-state organization that helps small and medium Irish businesses develop and expand. Our last stop of the day was the Houses of Parliament (kind of boring, but some parts of the building were very pretty - unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take pictures ... read more

OK - so I finally made it to Dublin (only about 5 hours later than planned, but I got here). Here's a recap of the Charlotte fiasco: 1. Take-off time got bumped back from 4:30 to 5:00 2. We didn't start boarding the plane until 5:00 (then boarding only took about 5 years for some reason) 3. AFTER we pull away from the gate, the pilot says we have a weight/balance issue and will have to remove persons and/or cargo. So after we sit for awhile, they announce that they are going to remove one pallet. THEN, a family decides they don't want to stay on the plane because they're going to miss their connecting flight anyway - so we have to wait for them to leave and for the crew to pull their luggage. 4. ... read more

Waking up the next morning on St. Patty's Day, I had high expectations as I was planning on heading out of town to meet a friend who lives in Dublin(Jenny), while Scott enjoyed the parade. We got up early enough and I was not able to contact my friend as her cell phone seemed off, so I went into town with Scott until I would get the train out. We ended up going to the main street and standing somewhere so we could get a glimpse of the parade(about 2 hours before it started). I continued calling numerous times to Jenny, but had no luck getting through and was still standing in the same place when the parade started at 12:30. First up after the officials and horses walked by was a bit shocking. West Des ... read more

So what's the meaning of this? A trip to Dublin was what came about. An old pal of mine from high school by the name of Scott Evans has been studying in Alicante, Spain and notified me he would like to do a trip to Ireland on St. Pattys. I highly insisted we should go to Galway, and even found hostels etc. A week later in my inbox was a message that Mr. Evans had booked a room at the "The hotel is Hilton Dublin Hotel, Northern Cross, Malahide Rd., Dublin D17 Ireland". Seemed a bit out of my range considering I had been enjoying spider infested 1 Euro a night rooms in Dharmasala not all to recently. I wanting an excuse to get out of Dingle for a little while decided to take this vacation ... read more
