Writing the date on here is the only thing that’s reminding me. I know I’ve only been gone 2 days, but it feels like 2 weeks. In a good way, of course! It’s just that travelling by oneself, there’s so much ‘me’ time -each day feels like 3 or 4. This morning, after a restless nights sleep-I always feel so bad for snoring in a hostel, I wake up so much during the night. I went to Christ Church Cathedral. I know, another church! But the oldest-almost 1 century! That’s nuts! The area I was in was the original part of the city-from Viking times! I got to go to a morning prayer at the church, so that connected me. Also, they had a crypt! That was cool, and felt kinda Da Vinci Code-ish. Wait—are ... read more

5/30/07 Arrived in Dublin early this morning, after an uneventful 8 hour flight. Took the city bus from the airport to my hostel-slightly freaked out, trying to figure out where my stop was without a map or help. But God helped me. Dropped off luggage at hostel—Avalon House, just south of Temple Bar. Took a “Hop On, Hop Off” bus tour. Went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral-the largest in Ireland. St. Patrick himself (in the 4th or 5th century, I think) used to baptize people there. Next on to Guinness Storehouse. I was pretty disappointed in this crappy tour, because it was just a converted warehouse, with some fancy designs, and computer screens over 7 floors, showing you how Guinness is made. If I wanted that, I could be sitting at home watching the Discovery Channel ... read more

Tonight is our last night on the Emerald Isle. The sights have been amazing, and the people have been great. The locals have been more than accomidating, some going out of their way to help up. One woman at a bus stop ran into the store we were in to alert us that our bus had arrived. A repair man ran after us to give us some eye drops from his first aide kit when the store we were in had none. Its been everything that I've hoped for, and am sad to leave it behind. I didn't find a shilelah though, just painted sticks. Maybe I expected to much. On to Istanbul!... read more

Hi everyone, I have decided to start up a blog of my adventures in Africa and though this site is not as fancy as some other people's blogs (ahem) I think it will do just fine for me! Also it's a pretty cool site for those of you who want to get some ideas/info on places to go from people who have actually been there by looking at other people's posts etc or indeed for anyone who is bored in work/trying to avoid study. I'm not sure how regularly I'll be able to update the blog as our village has no electricity so it will only be on trips to Singida that I'll have internet access, but hopefully I'll be able to add an entry every week or so and once I'm in Uganda access shouldn't ... read more

I've decided to spend most of the day in Dublin, as the sun is shining (at least temporarily), and I can see a few more sights, and maybe get some photos taken. I get myself packed, and then decide on a hot breakfast (haven't had much to eat for the last few days, so a bit peckish). the €9.50 for Irish breaky is sounding like the solution. Discovered a whole new section of the hotel. My room is 100' from the train line. I don't think this side is anywhere near that. The breakfast was quite good, lots to choose from, and it's hot. Something interesting in the mix. Black & White Pudding. They look like flattened muffins. Some dark, some light in colour. I know better than to put things in my mouth, without ... read more

It was our first sunny day in Ireland. When we flew in the island was completely obscured by cloud cover. I (John) didn't sleep on the plane because I didn't want to miss it. Anyhow, the city looked different, and the temperture went up by at least 20 degrees. Yesterday, we saw several cathedrals, and a museum. Today, we spent most of the morning getting to and in Collin barracks. It was a Brittish military training ground that was recently turned into the "Decorative Arts & History Museum." It was much more interesting then it sounds. There was an exhibit on the history of Irish soldiers, from medieval times, to fighting in foriegn wars in the armies of England's enemies, to the World Wars, and present military operations. There was also an exhibit on the ... read more
