At 1pm, we met part of our group and the local guide to visit SZENTENDRE, a cute town with cobble-stoned streets and many little shops, all in one area. Two girls from the other Cosmos group were late, so our bus left them. We toured the MARZIPAN MUSEUM that had many things on display made of marzipan from the House of Parliament, kings and queens, cartoon characters and even a life-size figure of Michael Jackson! Imagine having to eat him! No thanks!!!! We enjoyed a drink and cake with chocolate icing at an inn and then climbed narrow steps to a Greek Church. Our guide pointed out that people grew their gardens in the center of their homes. Up here we had views of this and many red rooftops of the village. There was also a ... read more

We crossed into Hungary at a very small border crossing from Slovakia, so small a road we got lost and couldn't find Hungary for a while! Very surprisingly the first building we met in Hungary, about 2km over the border, was a campsite. The campsite was hosting the '11th annual international cave rescue conference' but there was still plenty of room for us. Weather was good so we parked up, got the bikes out and went exploring the local Aggteleki national park. Good cycle through very picturesque hills and scenery. Eger The days drive was through very rural and very beautiful rolling hills of north Hungary, down to the town of Eger. Eger is famous for its wine but its also a very pretty, laid back old town with some lovely buildings. We spent a ... read more

We arrived at the Hungarian border at 2pm and Tunde being from Hungary worked her magic and the crossing only took 7 minutes! Go Tunde! She was very excited about this part of the tour since this was her home and she was hoping that we would enjoy it. We arrived at our hotel in Budapest in the evening at the Tulip Inn. This one had air conditioner but was somewhat muggy at times. Our dinner was at the hotel and we sat with a woman who was traveling with her mother. Dinner included beef with french fries and the dessert was ricotta cheese wrapped in flour. It wasn't my favorite but did have a surprising sweet taste. I was excited about tonight as we were doing a one hour evening cruise down the Danube ... read more

So, was ... read more

Hey everyone! I think that last I was heard from I was still in Belgium well lots and lots has happened since but I have very limited time to write so this will be much briefer than it deserves. After leaving Antwerp along with Tom and Sabrina I headed off to Amsterdam. Crazy crazy city just let me say. America sweeps so much stuff under the carpet, if you were to lift that carpet you would have Amsterdam. What America shames Amsterdam embraces. While it is embraced it is mainly for tourists that make use of the crazier part of town walk 2 or 3 blocks and Amsterdam is an incredibly quite and classy place. I believe that Amsterdonians view the crazy part of town much as an artist does that dislikes the rich people that ... read more

My dad came into to Prague to visit this week. We stayed in Prague fro two days. Went south to Ceske Budejovice for a daytrip and then headed to Budapest. We did a lot of fun stuff in Prague besides the general touristy stuff. After taking my dad around to Prague Castle, Old Town Square, Vysehrad, Wencelas Square and the like, we went to Letna Park, walked through the entire park - hoping to see maybe a foot left of the Stalin statue that used to be up there (but were disappointed to find an unworking giant metronome). Then we walked over to the Royal Botanical Gardens. Both places I had been meaning to visit but never got hte chance. I really enjoyed Letna Park, which is definitely not taken over by tourists and enjoys ... read more

Trip so farMatthew Feben After suffering a little bit of a setback with our itinerary it was decided that we would have to bypass Salzburg due to us being unable to find any accommodation that suited our budget. Although this was unfortunate we moved on and set our sights on Budapest. After rising early yet again to catch a train, we walked the short distance to the train station and boarded the train to Budapest......and yet again in was another uncomfortable 7.5hour train ride that carried us the full width of Austria and all the way Hungary. Tired and grumpy we finally arrived at Keleti Station in Budapest. With little trouble we found our hostel and after a quick feed and a quick email or two we hit the sack pretty early. After a good nights ... read more

The story begins in the Krakow train station because that's where we met Andreas. Jeremy, Melissa, Benny and I were buying our train tickets to Budapest and a guy asked Jeremy whether the backpack sitting behind him was his. When Jeremy said that it was, the guy said that he had overheard that we were headed to Budapest and that if he wanted to keep his things, he'd better keep a better eye on his things...that his backpack would've vanished in seconds had we been in a public area in Budapest! That was our introduction to Andreas, a German-Pakistani law student who studies in Budapest at the moment. We saw him later on in the train and he sat with us for a while and told us all of the interesting things that we could see ... read more

I always knew I had it in me, and have had plenty of oppurtunity to practise on our travels (Hyde Park, Mirabell Gardens, Schonnbrunn Palace...), but in Budapest I have perfected the art of sitting and watching the world go by. Often I have a book with me, other times, its just my I-pod, but there is never a shortage of people to watch. I sat in a Square, and some Budapestian locals, maybe on their lunch break, dressed in dark suits (one crushed velvet!), sunnies on, ties slung over their shoulders stroll into the square with half a dozen long necks (obviously containing Hungary's finest) and two big bags of chips. They flip the top off their bottles and perform a strange 'cheersing' ceremony, the bottles are clinked multiple times from top to bottom, slowly ... read more

According to an excellent website, seat61.com, which has information about all sorts of train travel around the world we should have been able to purchase a cheap ticket from Istanbul to Budapest with a quick train change in Bucharest. Unfortunately the agent at the train station was not helpful and prices must have jumped because instead of the 30-50€ listed on line we were quoted €310 for a six person berth. So we decided to take a flight from Turkey to Budapest to save time. Once again Sam found us an Ibis hotel and as we were making change for the bus I overheard an American GI on leave asking the clerk for an inexpensive hotel around 50-80€. We introduced ourselves and took Carl under our wing. He was amazed how we casually guessed at ... read more
