I caught the nine hour train ride from Ljubljana to Budapest and tried to sleep without much success. My host Heni was waiting for me at the train station, and after dropping my bag off we went for some traditional Hungarian goulash. We then cruised around town visiting the places of interest. Budapest is made up of two cities, Buda and Pest which amalgamated in 1873. They are divided by the Danube river. We had a drink at a park area where a strange band was playing with a strange instrument - I don't even know how to describe it. We then moved on to a cool club which felt like a mix of a trendy new club and someone's garage. In the room we were sitting there are messages carved all over the wall. ... read more

BudapestJulie J Vanover I didn't really know what to see in Budapest other than the thermal baths and the Fisherman's Warf. So I was very pleasantly suprised at how much there was to do and see and how much I liked Budapest. I arrived on a holiday so most things were closed, so when I saw a sign to go caving at my hostel I signed up! I had a few hours before caving started so I explored some of the city. I saw the Gellert Hotel and Bath House, the Citadel and this weird cave church thing. The church was built into the side of the hill side in some caves. It was cool and there was chanting going on that echoed through the whole church. Cool but odd. Walked around Buda Palace and explored ... read more

Hi, I'm new here, this is my 1st entry. I already created a blog on another site, but I just found this one and thought this one's better. Therefore, I intend to blog here in the future. In the following, I'll copy what I have written on the other site (only 3 entries): May 11, 2007: Good evening ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to my blog. As you can see in my introduction, and as you will see during the following months - and hopefully years - in this blog, I am a fanatic. And my passion is traveling, getting to know other countries, their cultures, visiting airports, SPOTTING aircraft, and most obviously, FLYING. There is nothing I like more than the aforementioned activities. Let me warn you, however, that I am not an experienced traveller (yet), ... read more

The Fortress of Eger Europe » Hungary » Eger By korossylMay 25th 2007 I'm pretty much living a dream. In 1552, 2,000 Hungarians under the command of Capt. István Dobó engaged the Turkish forces under bashas Ali and Ahmed. When the Turks retreated 30 days later, there were 400 Hungarian martyred... and 140,000 Turks killed. This is one of the most glorious victories in Hungarian history, and was immortalized in a novel by Géza Gárdonyi that has since become required reading in all Hungarian school. This book was pivotal in my own awakening to my Hungarian heritage, and to work day by day in this sacred place is an unbelievable honor. So, I took about 120 pictures, so here's some of them. ... read more

The Glorious City Europe » Hungary » Budapest By korossylMay 23rd 2007From 05/17-05/20 I had the privilege of being a guest in Budapest, the Pearl of the Danube, the Glorious City, the Cradle of Civilization... I chose to take some rather non-standard tours of the city, so there's not many photos of interest to the regular sight-seer. For those, I suggest trying here .... read more

Eger Europe » Hungary » Eger By korossylMay 23rd 2007So, on 05/21 I made it to Eger, and on 05/23 I went on a photo expedition. Unfortunately, I also got pretty tired of uploading photos to this blog, so it's good I didn't take more. After a few days relaxing in Eger we headed for the Bukk national park, about 20km north east of Eger. We've enjoyed keeping fit and excercising in the outdoors on this trip and after a few days of relaxing we are always eger to get back to the countryside for some hiking or cycling. We stayed at a great campsite in a lovely rural village called Borsodbota. It was run by a dutch man named Gert, and his wife. A lot of the campsites in Hungary seem to be owned by dutch or germans. Gert was very helpfull with information on the local area and intresting to talk to about eastern europe as he has been travelling here for 30 years and living here for the last few. Gert advised us on a route for ... read more

A sightseeing city tour of Budapest included HERO'S SQUARE, but only driving by House of Parliament and the Royal Palace. Hero's Square is next to City Park and in the center is Millennium Memorial. The statues are leaders of seven tribes that founded Hungary in the 9th century. There are also statues of important men in Hungarian history behind the memorial. The Museum of Fine Arts and Palace of Art are beside it. From here we passed the sights of Parliament, the Danube and Margaret's Island, and many different buildings. We walked up Castle Hill and viewed Monastery of War with its' numerous bullet holes and then to FISHERMEN'S BASTION and MATTHIAS CHURCH. This is on the hilly buda side of the Danube and was built between 1895-1902. The 7 towers represent 7 Magyar tribes that ... read more
