Adventures in Gastronomy! Europe » Hungary By korossylJune 8th 2007 I love my life, and what I'm studying, and what I'm hoping to do with it. But if I had another life to live, I think I'd be a priest (well, and Catholic). And if I had another one... an airline pilot... and if I had a fourth, I'd be a master chef. Maybe even before airline pilot? Who knows... I suppose, ultimately, it doesn't really matter all that much... But being in Hungary has allowed me to indulge in this (perhaps) tertiary passion to a degree I have neither the time nor the means for in the New World. Here's how it works: any Hungarian food is better than all non-Hungarian food. Pretty simple! So, here's some samplings of the fantastic adventure I, as an amateur gastronom ... read more

Small village between Szentendre and Ezstergom, very famous for medival castle standing on the hill overlooking the Danube. Visegrád is picturesquely situated at the exit of a loop in the Danube in the Danube Bend about 40km (25mi.) north of Budapest. This historical town is a popular destination for excursions because of the ruins of the royal palace and the views from the citadel. History The Romans took advantage of the strategic location above the Danube founding a military camp on the Sibrik Hills in the 4th C (reconstruction of a watch tower near Fo utca). In the 9th C Slavs settled in the ruins of the Roman fort and named the settlement Visegrád (Slavic: high castle); later the conquering Magyars took over the castle. After the invasion of the Mongols in 1241, to which Visegrád ... read more

Second Day in Budapest was walking... walking ... walking... up to Buda Hill! Well, before hand we stopped by at Nypoti (can't spell) train station to get our tickets for Zagreb - 28 euros each. Gosh... everything is so cheap compare to the UK. Imagine how much this would cost for a 6 hour train journey... at least 50pounds even for a young person card... ridiculous! anywayz, afterwards we walked around the Váci Utca the main shopping street in Budapest, and it starts raining! Hence we decide to stop by and have lunch first before going further to Buda Hill. We took the cable car up, and the thunderstorm came! saw the rain splashing down the ground so hard (and I think it's more like hale storm than thunderstorm... but i did saw lightning... and ... read more

I had to go home today, although Trent had to get on his train first. He was on his way to Split Croatia and I was on my way to Vienna. Hungary has been interesting, but I think Trent and I were tired of cities. We were really ready to go to somewhere relaxing and beachy, but thanks to my travel agent, I just didn't have time for Croatia, which was really the only place I wanted to go in the first place. So we went to Budapest instead. The food here was really cheap, which is one of the only really great things I can say about Budapest. Oh, that and our hostel was awesome! If you go to Budapest, stay at Ginkho hostel! The owner is really nice and it's clean and really ... read more

UntitledMilk Powder Strolling at Budapest around River Danube in the evening We arrived at Budapest later than expected, because there was a thunderstorm around the airport so we kept having roller coaster ride on cloud 9... and falling a sleep. Everyone was so scared of staying too long in the custom as they fear the hungarian will question them like the time in Krakow... but gladly they are so friendly as they just chop, chop and here we are in Budapest! First impression of Budapest is it's a mixture of Paris (the Grand part, lovely western Architecture - Big, Large, GRAND!) and Communist buildings (the old, ugly, lost of broken holes - like the ones in Beijing... but I guess they are all gone now in Beijing for redevelopment). and I expected more of the grand ... read more

So, since last week all my exams here are over now. On Friday it was very hectic cause I had 2 exams at one day. 1st one at 8.30 and during the teacher was still explaining sth, I already started - must finish. Then send him the solutions and run to the next building up the 7th floor where the other students where already sitting. But yesterday I got my results and I passed everything with satisfactory achievement. Thus I could make party the weekend. There was the flat party of Theo on Friday who had already left now and another flat party in Andre's and Anna's flat cause of her birther. Later as usual going to disco until the morning. On pentacost Sunday we gathered at Margit Island, also with a lot of finns ... read more

Wow! So a lot has happened since my last entry. A good indication that I have been busy is that it's been since march... The time is going by so fast and I have a hard time believing that it's already the end of May and it's bringing on stress, sadness and also a bit of excitement. Stress since I feel like there is still so much to do, and only a month to get it all done before my parents arrive! Sadness as my year is coming to an end and I have truly grown to love it here and saying goodbye to some amazing friends is going to be extremely hard for me, but also excitement as I'm going to be home at the end of July and see everyone whom I haven't ... read more

Had 3 days to do Budapest so i figured 1 day Buda, 1 day Pest an 1 day Bath time! Monday trekked over to Castle Hill and walked up from the metro. The view from the castle wall gave a good view over pest, really flat on that side of the river. This city is really sprawled out compared to other cities. More tile roof on Mattius Church an then down the hill to have a look at the castle. Didnt think it was as impressive as those in Czech or Romania. The citadel was on the opposite hill so it was another trek to get up that. What is it with European cities with castles an monuments on hills (an then charging when you get right to the top). Another afternoon storm because of ... read more
