Okay, so jet lag is a real and formidable force. I began yesterday with such good (and ambitious) intentions. My plan was to walk a circle beginning at my hotel, up to the top of the citadel, down to the National gallery, up again to Matyas Templom, then return to the hotel. Needless to say, this did not happen. After eating a healthy breakfast of cheese and fruit, I finished my blog and headed...back to my room. I was so wiped out I felt I simply could not deal with leaving the hotel. So I didn't. Around noon, feeling slightly more able, I pushed myself to get out still thinking I would make the circuit. The walk to Gellert Hegy was a casual stroll, but the first flight of stairs up the hill made me ... read more

After I left the computer yesterday, I went out for a wander along the Vaci Utc. It was a gorgeous day...approx 16 C (Question for my students...what is the Farenheit equivalent?) and I dressed accordingly. Fred had to work, so I grabbed my guidebook, some Florint (Q...where did the Hungarians get the name for their money?), water, and set off for a few hours. The Vaci Ut. is a somewhat typical pedestrian-only shopping district. Many souvenir shops, clothing/shoe stores, coffee shops, and restaurants. The difference is, you see some interesting buildings in classic styles with a fair number of Soviet-era buildings thrown in.) After wandering the street for an hour, I stopped for lunch at what was advertised to be an Irish pub. In a strange 'twist' this Irish pub had a very Greek menu. ... read more

Greetings friends, We awoke at 4am PST and headed for the airport. All filghts went smoothly, although the restaurant in JFK was pretty slow so we did not get our entire meal before we had to leave to catch the leg to Budapest. Once we landed, getting through immigration was a breeze, however, I misplaced my travel guide on the plane (so like me.) We waited in the airport a bit until the employees brought it out to me. A loooong taxi ride to the hotel and waiting while they prepared our room. We are now headed out to do the real fun things. More later!... read more

We know, it's been a while. So instead of boring you all with the details of our 7 hour, no-sign-of-life, thigh deep snow hike though the Slovakian Alps OR the beautifully picturesque ancient capital of Moravia in Czech republic, littered with Baroque fountains and gorgeous gardens OR the crazy tourist-ridden streets of Prague OR our personal whirlwind tour of Vienna OR our afternoon of wine tasting and picnicking in the Hungarian east OR lolling in the steamy, sun-drenched baths in Budapest we thought we'd take you on our journey - exploring living quarters and a few extra-special culinary delights. "Welcome to Hotel Overland. My name is Tiit Hunt from Estonia. We aim to cater to all tastes and budgets, and can offer a range of accommodation, from five stars to minus two. Hello in Hungarian (we didn’t learn how to say it) We’ve returned from behind the iron curtain. Well its no longer soviet but had a distinct air of post communism. Derelict buildings, graffiti, serious people and some signs of recent foreign investment in new renovation work. Its still a few years behind Prague. Our trip started early, as usual, getting on the easybus to Luton airport. Surprisingly smooth transit out to the middle of nowhere airport. It made a change to be early for the flight and not spend hours in security. Although we must commend Luton for their original security procedures. Cathy with shoes and coat off stood in the booth with feet on the footprints and hands above head and after being humiliated was finally scanned when they could be bothered, apparently with ... read more

But first there was a big international Erasmus Party, organized by the esn (European Student Network) because of their 20th birthday. It was very cheap: Entrance and every drink 1€. And this was a good change to get rid of the 1€-coins you cannot use here. So a lot of people or almost every one (@mum: not me!!!!!) was very drunken and slept the whole day. But those who were a little bit fitter, gathered to go to the zoo at this nice sunny day. In the evening we visited the Budapest Fringe Festival: There were some concerts like Jazz and so on, fire-shows, pop concerts, theaters, . . . A lot of people ... read more

Budapest’s Opera House We took a tour of the Budapest Opera House. The tour is not cheap, but I felt it was worth the cost. It is a most beautiful building, not so much from the outside, but on the inside. Franz-Josef, the last Hapsburg emperor his gave permission that the building could be constructed on one condition, it could not be larger than the one in Vienna. Plans had already been made that the opera house would seat three thousand people. These plans were altered such that only about thirteen hundred could be seated. The building is absolutely beautiful inside and I really wanted to take pictures, but there are very strict rules against this. Photos can be taken in the lobby and the ticket office, but nowhere else. Our guide explained this very carefully ... read more

This has got to be one of the most beautiful cities Ive been to so far. Its kinda funny though its sorta like basel, but bigger. It was really funny arriving in Budapest, I felt like I'd come back into civilisation a little bit. Had this amazing sleeper train that even had a duvet rather than the bog-standard-20year-old blanket aaaaaaaah. And when I arrived in the train station... nothing! One guy asked me 'Taxi?' I said no thankyou, and... that was it! I couldnt beleive it. Then I got on the metro, which was very easy to navigate, and got to the hostel with no trouble whatsoever. Admittedly noone said 'welcome to hungary' like they did in turkey, but it wasnt far off! Budapest is beautiful, and theres really a lot going on. We went ... read more
