Mz happz little tour group checked into the hotel in Budapest and everzone was going on the optional overpriced excursion to do a river cruise and have dinner. Mz group this time is not that great to I decided to find mz own entertainment. There it was as I checked in... THAI MASSAGE. The massage place was right in the hotel and as luck would have it they had a two hour opening jsut for me... so I took it and was so excited at the price. $70... a real steal. The last days were really fully booked. On Friday we were rock climbing the whole day with some mentors outside in the Buda Hills. Really good and nice to learn/try it a little bit. Saturday morning I went with Andre to Tokaj - the famous white wine region in the northeast of Hungary. There had arranged to meet with the other esn-group from Debrecen. In price it is quite cheap here. Accomodation less than 7€ and beer in the Disco also only 1€. Before we started with wine tastings, we looked around in the village of Tokaj and visited the wine museum. If you want wine, you must only ring at some door and ask to get one. Then you go with the wine grower to his wine cellare, taste some and drink what you ... read more

On Weds I decided to go to the Jewish Ghetto. What I saw and heard about there are things I think you should experience for yourself, not through any interpretation so my descriptions will be brief. My first waderings took me to the "Jewish Quarter" to experience the Jewish synagog on Dohany street. It has been repaired to it's glory subsequent to the bomb damage sustained during the Holocaust. If a trip to this site is on your agenda, pay for the tour. The information you will glean from your guide is priceless and imperative to understanding the significance of this place. The synagog was on the edge of the Jewish ghetto (alluded to by a section of wall erected where the original wall enclosed the section.) This site also contains a mass grave of ... read more

The saga continues... Today is our last full day in Budapest, and I'm upset to see it go - its easily been my best stop on the trip so far. We've met absolutely shedloads of really nice people, had some awesome nights out, and generally rocked Hungary's socks off. We've also, as previously mentioned, spent a long time in the hostel, getting to know the lovely people that work here, and leaving our mark a little bit. Over the last couple of days, We've done some more of the touristy stuff - We went up to the Independence Monument, which is on a huge hill with overlooks all of Budapest, and is possibly one of my favorite view in the world. We also went to the posher baths at the Gellert Hotel, as I said we ... read more

Lesson 1: Read your travel books prior to visiting sites. I decided on Monday to walk up to the National Gallery and the over to Matyas Templom and somewhere in there, have lunch and write postcards. Before leaving, however, I thought I would look into public transport passes and bargains associated with them. At the information center next to McD's on Deak Ter, I discovered as much as I needed and more. Look into it right when you arrive. If you are staying a week or so, the options really make sense. The one thing i found that I decided would be usefl for me was information on renting bikes, which I used on Tuesday. Continuing with my plan, I walked over the chain bridge (Szechenyi Ianchid) and on the spur of the moment, 'splurged' ... read more

This morning, Fred's coworker downloaded my pics and found a USB cord for me to use, therefore, I should be putting photos up for my entries....but back to the interesting stuff... Owing to the late night prior, Fred and I overslept the 1/2-9 mass at Cave Church (for complete summary/history of chapel see: http://forteantimes.com/articles/210_budapest2.shtml). That was fine because they have 3 masses each day. Now, not being one who attends regularly (okay, RARELY...) I did not want to overextend myself and go to the 2 hour mass in the afternoon, so we got ready and walked over for the 11:00am service. Arriving early, we were able to find seats, not too far back and not too far forward, as tourists are not allowed during services and we did not want to be intrusive. (photo @ ... read more

After much long typing, I am happy to finally caught up with myself. After a short(ish) train journey, me, Ollie, Carl and Alex (Darvill, not Calkin) arrived in Budapest. A quick taxi ride later, we arrived in easily the best hostel we have been in so far. The place is, and I mean this, a Backpacker's Paradise. Which is convient, considering thats the name of the hostel itself. Incredibly relaxed, incredibly calm, with a DVD collection unrivaled anywhere else in Christendom, and filled to the brim with lovely people (and, of course, a few duds), we have difficulty leaving everyday. Its also quite far from the action, which makes it even harder. However, we have preserved, and gone out a few times for some amazing nights out, and also seen quite a lot of Budapest, ... read more

So, back to yesterday...Fred was having trouble with jetlag, awoke early and left to work on email. I was getting up just as he returned to the room so when he chose to nap, so did I. Therefore, we did not leave the hotel until 11:00, missing the only boat of the day up to Szentendre (Saint Andrews...S.A.), a small 'oldfashioned' town just up the Duna (Danube.) These ferries run more often later in the season and not at all in winter, but in April, only the one. So we toddled on over to Batthyany Ter Metro/Train station and caught the green line to S.A. instead. After arriving in S.A. we realized that we could have easily made the 12 mile trek on bikes (we found a rental place near our hotel) and it would ... read more

I have to say, "Budapest is truly a walk-accessible city." When last I wrote, I was planning to walk a bit and then hop the metro at some point along Andrassy Utca (A.U.) to head out to Heroes Square (Hosok tere), but as I meandered along, I realized that things were absolutely walkable, if you have the time (if you don't, take the Metro and just get on and off at the various sites along the way.) Along A.U. there are a few interesting sites including the Opera house, buildings surrounding old palace gardens (inaccessible, I just peered through the gates), and a great number of embassies (once again, I peered through the gates.) Interesting for people who like to look at the outsides of old buildings while enjoying a gelato. At a slow-to-moderate pace, ... read more
