Heroes Square -- Hosok Tere Europe » Hungary » Budapest By Bill and Nancy March 21st 2007 Bill & Nancy Lively Heroes Square Hannah took us to Heroes Square at the end of a long day of sight seeing. I was fortunate in that the sun was shining and that made taking photographs easier. It was getting late in the day and there were a few people there. The square is big. Nancy noticed that all of the heroes, all 14 of them, lived prior to Columbus discovering the new world in 1492. The heroes are: Stephen I of Hungary Ladislaus I of Hungary Coloman of Hungary Andrew II of Hungary Béla IV of Hungary Charles I of Hungary Louis I of Hungary János Hunyadi Matthias Corvinus of Hungary István Bocskay Gabriel Bethlen Imre Thököly ... read more

The synagogue in Budapest is the second largest in the world. The largest is in New York City. Frankly, to me, except for the Star of David and the Hebrew written on the walls, the synagogue in Budapest looks very much like a Christian church. I was surprised that the synagogue has an area from which a speaker can be better heard which is much like those in large Christian cathedrals. There is a circular staircase to walk up to the 'raised pulpit'. It is in the same location that I have seen raised pulpits in Catholic churches and cathedrals. Perhaps this is not uncommon. Regardless, I was surprised. - I am not sure if it is common or not but this synagogue was so enormous that it was necessary, I am sure, for anyone ... read more

We visited St. Stephens the first evening we were in Prague. Sitting high on the hill overlooking the Danube the church is named for Stephen, the first King of Hungary. Stephen ruled from 975-1038. I was surprised that everyone is allowed to take pictures in the church and I did take advantage of this privilege. As we entered we were told that the church would closed to visitors in about twenty minutes as there was a funeral service scheduled. Sorry the pictures are so dark but the interior of the church is very dark. ... read more

Blown away in Budapest ... well almost We were walking to our hotel, which was only a two minute walk away. The hotel has a great location. Hannah was waiting for us when we alighted from the train at the Keleti train station. The station is a classic European station with the traditional huge glass domed ceilings. The glass in this station is not plain glass but quite nicely decorated. I don't know if it is etched or how the design was put in the glass. I felt almost as if I were at the main train station in Frankfurt, Germany. After checking into the hotel Hannah helped us buy three day Budapest passes. We did not buy the tourist card and as it turned out that was probably just as well. Tourist passes are great ... read more

(July 1 through July 4 2006) July 1 The train left the Bratislava station an hour late. We were to get off at the Keleti Train Station, and once we arrived to the city we were a bit confused. However, in the end it all worked out. The train station is small, with few platforms, but it is an amazing building. We had again booked a hostel online. The hostel's address was not written on it's information, but we knew it was near one of the train stations. Since we believed to be in the quieter part of town we guessed that the hostel was near the Nyugati Train station. So with our map in hand we headed towards that station. The lady at the information desk had not heard of our hostel, so she could ... read more

Dublin Pubs and Pubs, a bar and pubs .... and a gay bar... So I left you all last with the taste of stale hot dog in your mouths and my being in New York before making my first international stop in Dublin Ireland .... Ahhh, yes, Dublin. I shall look back on it fondly as a city I that won1t go back to unless I want to die broke and hungover in a gutter, or St. Stephens park (I spent a lot of time trying to sleep there, who knew the Irish guards were so picky about having to sit upright on the bench!) ... OR if Daddy is paying, no really, I have already made plans for us to all go next year! Laura, James ... I know you are on board with this ... read more

Her name was, Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie, Duchess in Bavaria and she was a beauty and she knew it. In fact, everyone knew it. In the State Opera House there is a huge mirror at the top of a staircase that she used. It was the staircase that led to her box where she could sit when her husband was not in attendance at the opera. When she arrived at the top of the stairs she would admire herself and adjust her hair and makeup for quite a long period of time before going to the box reserved to her. Elisabeth loved the opera and attended often. A box near and above the stage was always reserved for her. It is a terrible box from which to see the opera as only half the stage is visible ... read more

We got up early and were standing at the bus stop in Jeneralka in time to catch the 6:30 a.m. bus to Devicka where we could catch the first subway train. All we had to do then was ride the subway to the Muzeum stop, change from the Green Line to the Red Line and go one stop to the train station. Our destination was Budapest where we planned a long weekend, to the city and our friend Hannah. The train was scheduled to leave Prague at 7:32 and that is exactly what happened. Transportation is so wonderfully easy in Prague! Just as the train began to move I saw a woman walk onto the platform and begin yelling for the train to stop. Amazingly the platform conductor waved his sign and the train stopped. ... read more
