We set off for the village of Kolympia to explore the large hotel complex and water park that we saw in the distance from the Tsambika Monastery yesterday morning. We pass a sign to a beach with a very Russian sounding name. I'm sure this same beach had a more Greek sounding name when we passed it yesterday. I tell Issy that we should be prepared for Lindos to have been renamed to Lindosgrad by the time we get back there this afternoon. The hotel complex doesn't look quite so significant from the ground, and is really several different smaller hotel complexes. Even the water park looks quite small. We drive along the road behind the beach past the customary forest of beach umbrellas and sun lounges. We reach a dead end, so we turn around ... read more

Issy's not hungry so I go to breakfast on my own. An older English couple comes in to the restaurant. The man is wearing sandals, beach shorts, a blue shirt and a tie. It looks like he dressed his top half thinking that he was going to work, and then remembered that he was on holiday. We've decided that we'll spend the first half of the day sightseeing, and the second half lying on the beach. Issy seems a bit more relaxed about us driving than she was a couple of days ago. Because they drive on the right hand side of the road in Greece, just about everything in the car is opposite to what we're used to. The driver's seat is on the left, and the indicator is on the left of the steering ... read more

Issy says that we need some exercise, so we decide to walk into Lindos which is about two kilometres from the hotel. If yesterday was anything to go by I think Issy's heart would get more exercise if we drove. It's very hot. The only way from the hotel to Lindos is along the main coast road. It's very busy and there are no footpaths. We start walking on the narrow strip of road between the edge of the traffic lane and the crash barrier. There are lots of buses on the road, and they don't seem all that keen on sharing the bitumen with us. Issy soon decides that this is too dangerous so we cross to the other side of the road where we can walk along the bottom of a concrete drain outside ... read more

The hotel's full, but we're just about the only people at breakfast. It seems that the hotel's rich and famous guests either aren't into breakfast, or don't mind forking out for room service. A very fit looking middle aged German lady is doing laps of the pool next to where we're sitting. I think she might be trying to make us feel guilty. We've booked a taxi to take us in to Rhodes Town, where we've booked a half day walking tour. It's good to see the road in daylight. It's also good to see it when we don't have our hearts in our mouths as we did when we came here two nights ago with our lunatic taxi driver. We meet our contact, who introduces himself as George Papadopolous, which I think is the Greek ... read more

Issy's been reading the blog. She asks me if I'm going to write that this morning I slept in. I remind her of author's prerogative. We sleep in. We move into our downgraded room. It's only slightly smaller than the suite, and the only other noticeable difference is that it has a chair instead of a couch. It is however higher on the hill, and has a better balcony and view. Issy says she likes it, so I think I may have narrowly escaped divorce yet again. I ask Issy if she notices any differences between our downgraded room and the suite. She says that the toilet door opens outwards instead of inwards. I hope this isn't going to be a big issue. The hotel looks very new and much posher than we're used to, and ... read more

Issy hasn't slept well. She says she was kept awake by the noise of the lift doors. The lift doors are certainly very annoying. They're right outside our room and they've been opening and closing all night every night we've been here, even when there's seemingly no one around to press any of the buttons. We've been trying to get around this by sending the lift back to the ground floor every night just before we go to sleep. This works for a while until someone else on our floor comes back to their room, and it seems that a resident of our floor is always the last guest back to the hotel every night. Issy says that if the next hotel has bad wifi, no bar fridge, and a noisy lift, she'll be divorcing me. ... read more

6th July - 19th July 2016 The 4 or so weeks before we left for Greece were very stressful weeks. We had a huge decision on our mind on whether to leave the UK early to go home for a great job offer for Matt with his previous company or to keep living our humble lives in Edinburgh, travelling to Europe on the weekends. When we had decided that it was definitely the best decision to take the job, it still took a few weeks for it to be confirmed on the NZ side which meant a lot of uncertainty for us. This meant we only ended up giving about 1 weeks notice to our work as we had already planned our Greece trip and arranged annual leave for it, so we decided we would finish ... read more

Aŕrived into the caldera of Santorini this morning and were taken ashore by local tender. We're decide to buy a ticket which combined a speedboat ride, bus to Ia, bus to Fira and cable car ride back. Great value at €20 each. We walked around , melting in the heat looking at the beautiful blue and white buildings that Santorini is famous for. Spectacular views. Had a nice cold beer and used the Wi-Fi and then boarded the bus to Fira and caught the cable car down. We passed on the donkey ride that is available t o either take you up or down from the port. Back to the boat for lunch and a snooze. We both agreed that we would love to return one day as Santorini had a great feel to it.... read more

The islands were beautiful but really hot for June. This has been a return trip to our favorite Cyclades Islands. Nothing really new, but all very enjoyable. The ferries took us from Crete to Santorini, to Paros and Antiparos, to Sifnos, to Syros, and to Mykonos. We've hiked, swam, visited museums, eaten lots of Greek food, ridden the local buses, and have had many a "freddo cappuccino" from cafes overlooking the sea. We have been in Switzerland since July 5. Beautiful weather and multiple hikes have kept us busy all day. I've needed a rainy day to finish this blog. Guess you now know what's happening here. Enjoying the journey, RPM... read more

Hello from the picturesque island of Mykonos. Today is Janet’s real birthday – not one of the pretend birthdays we have already celebrated. Happy birthday! Janet got lots of e-mail wishes from everyone to recognize her birthday. We also got delightful news and pictures from Valerie about the twin’s graduation from Kindergarten. CONGRATULATIONS to them! We got to sleep in this morning because arrival did not occur until noon. We went to the dining room and Janet got to have one more of her Eggs Benedict breakfasts (since she is missing her chance for a free Grand Slam at Denny’s today). Then she was off to a final session of the Knitters and Knatters Society. Meanwhile David found after breakfast that they were selling some of their souvenir T-shirts from this cruise, so he got each ... read more
