Working on a cruise ship is not always easy and especially these days, with a lot of restrictions still in place. At the moment we can only leave the ship once in a while, so the crew has to choose their ports carefully. A few cruises ago we decided to take our shore leave in Santorini, because I have never been to Greece before and it seemed like a nice place to get off. Also I thought it be really nice to get some good pictures to make my folks at home jealous lol Since the town itself is build on a cliff the ships are not able to dock here, so we had to anchor and take a tender to the bottom of town. From there you have three options to get into Santorini, either ... read more

Altstadt Rhodos.

I finally figured out how to get to Santorini: ferry early morning to Naxos then high speed ferry. So I scheduled my friendly taxi driver at 5 am, got up, dressed, grabbed my backpack and left my humble cave. Soon after my start down the stone stairs, I full on fell forward, with no way to stop due to being loaded down. Hard on my knee, twisted my ankle and scraped my elbow. Great start. A woman walked by about 40 seconds later and asked if I needed help with my bags.... I just hung my said and said no thanks. Ferry to Naxos The ferry departed at 7 am and it was pretty easy. I booked business class which was a minimal increase, and was able to pass out the two hours in the lounge ... read more

For my solo week, I decided to explore the Greek Islands. I had no idea where to start during the planning phase, but my friend's friend recommended Amorgos. The more I read up on it, the more I realized this would be exactly what I needed. I wanted a place to relax, stay in a cave home, and go on some hikes, and Amorgos ticked all those boxes. Ferry crossing After leaving my sister and her family at the airport (returning the car to the same super enthusiastic guy was fun!), I got a taxi to the port of Piraeus. Another expensive ride... But the driver took me right to the exact location and I was able to hangout in a restaurant for lunch, hot chocolate, and wifi for a few hours until my boat arrived. ... read more

So, after spending nearly three weeks in Greece, I tried many wines. And I visited several wineries in Santorini, known for their famous Assyrtiko wines. BTW, it is pronounced "us-EAT-teeko" and has a definite "volcanic" taste, in other words, a quite pronounced minerality, for lack of a better term. Karen at Winespeed is spot on about this wine: Assyrtiko, the white wine that brought world attention to the stunningly beautiful volcanic island of Santorini, is made in several styles today. But my favorite has always been the original style—fresh, pure, bone-dry, and made without the merest trace of oak. Santo Wine’s Assyrtiko—from 60- to 80-year-old vines —is exactly that, a wine that captures the lemons-and-salt-air crispness that Assyrtiko is known for. Sparks of minerals and acidity light up the wine, making it extra delicious with seafood. ... read more

Leaving Paros on the way back to Santorini for another 2 days before our flight back to Tel Aviv, I was happy to have one final glimpse of lovely Naxos when we stopped briefly in the port. The heatwave had also followed us back to Santorini and we were surprised that after barely 2 weeks, there were a lot more people. We decided not to hire a car and to stay around our hotel. We also had to start thinking about covid again, to get a PCR test and to fill in some online forms. We stayed in Fira this time at a 3-star hotel behind the town, facing the sunrise. It was old and very basic and the room we chose faced the street with a lot of noise from passing bikes. (The ATVs are ... read more

And now we come to Paros. Paros is one of the more popular islands and it was nice. Why just nice? Because the three days we spent there was in a heatwave -- they said that the weather hadn't been so hot on the islands for 5 years. As a result we stayed mostly around the main port city of Parikia at our extremely comfortable airbnb. The sky was a hazy grey color most of the time and because of the clouds on the horizon we didn't get to experience any of those famous Paros sunsets. There is not much to do on Paros. There is of course, the very popular village of Naoussa. We spent a morning wandering around the streets and the Venetian fort guarding the town. In normal weather we would have come ... read more
