After about 33 hours door to door we finally arrived at our villa in Platanias, around 15 KMs out of Chania. Lots of time hanging around airports but all with no dramas along the way. Hire car guy wasn't at Chania airport when we arrived but after an hour of stuffing around he finally arrived. ... read more

Wednesday, October 27 I slept like the dead last night and woke up early, my hair exploding all over the place, courtesy of a humid climate and going to bed with wet hair. It was a bit grey in the morning. The continental breakfasts of Greece, much like those in Israel, put anything I’ve seen in the states to shame, maybe just because I love the yoghurt here. With a little thyme honey and pomegranate seeds? Heaven. I got to drive today, which is quite fun. As we are returning to Heraklion, to meet the guys and catch the plane, we headed on this morning to Rothymnon and beyond. It stared raining as soon as we left and continued on and off all day. I am sooo glad I’m not on the boat right now, only ... read more

HOW TO BECOME A LOCAL IN CHANIA, CRETE IN ONLY ONE WEEK (what the guidebooks don't tell you) Themesong: Sunrise, Sunset Dresscode: Bikini, sunglasses, sparkly heels and an equally sparkly dress Accessories: Prayer beads It's univerally accepted that one is to sleep between the hours of sunset and sunrise, but this is not true here in Crete (or in Greece for that matter), but sleep is only permitted between the hours of sunrise and sunset. Here we've broken down a day's itinerary: 2:30 pm - Awake. 3:00 pm - Take bus to ocean beach bar in Agia Marina. 3:30 pm - Hamburger breakfast from sleeping position on lounge chair (NOTE: This is much, much better than breakfast in bed. Here you have the same effect, but get to hear waves crashing, watch attractive Greek boys play ... read more

Opa! Here we are in Chania, Crete and where do we even begin to tell you about what we've seen and experienced. Lots has changed also. We decided to cut out Turkey as we're running out of time and we also just couldn't bring ourselves to leave Crete today, so c'est la vie. To put it simply, Crete holds all of the ingredients to a happy life. We have decided to break up the extreme highs and lows of our time so far here in Crete by the following rating scale: Highs: - 5 star Italian dinner for four straight nights at the same restaurant,Kariatis. Truffle ravioli. Semeli white wine. We are now locals...they even made us our own reservation tonight. - Recovering from the nightlife on a plush lounge chair at a beach bar where ... read more

It was another scenic bus ride from Rethymno to Chania, again following the northern coast of Crete and providing some awesome cliff-side views. Other observations included mountain goats and miniature Orthodox churches that appear on the roadside. Common sense would tell you that they are memorials for people who have perished on those very spots on the road, but I'm not so sure. They have them in people's houses as well, almost as a substitute for going to an actual church. Standing outside Chania's rather chaotic bus station, I look at my map attempting to establish my location and a route to my accommodation. The Greek Cyrillic on the street signs and the Roman alphabet on my printed Google map don't help, so I resort to asking a local woman where I am on the map. ... read more

When we arrived in Greece, we had no idea that we would be entering the Greek Olympics. Anthem: Greek cover songs of American Top 40 Sponsor: Happily NOT sponsored by McDonalds. We have not seen one McDonalds during our entire trip!! Opening Ceremony: A shot of ouzo. Events: The Discus Throw - How many coins can you throw away in a day. It is so expensive here! This event can be claimed an even tie between Jolene and Diana. Both have consumed many beverages, bought too many souvenirs for our bags, and had many fine meals. The Marathon - How many hours is it actually possible to stay awake in the day without falling asleep while sitting up and drinking a coffee. I think dizziness after 2 hours of sleep in 2 days quantifies almost being ... read more

We were tempted to enter only “went swimming” as today’s entry, and it would cover most of the day’s events, but we’ll add a few additional details. We swam in the pool. We swam at the beach. We rested. We swam at the beach again. We swam in the pool again. Andrew and Lauren ordered ice cream that they were served while sitting at bar stools located in the swimming pool. The weather was warm and the pool water warm enough that a person could swim all day in the pool and never need to get out. After days of visiting historic sites and ruins, the kids were stoked for exploring this very important aspect of the Greek islands and simply could not get enough of playing in this uncrowded pool. Although we had planned to ... read more

Friday 8th May Souda Bay Commonwealth War Cemetary and Enchanting Chania After a good nights sleep in the 4 poster bed we awoke to a stunning sunrise and lay in bed with the old fashioned wooden window pushed up to watch the sun climb into the brilliant blue sky. There are two ways to get to the terrace at our traditional rooms,1)go down the stairs, across a room, through a small courtyard and climb some 20 odd dodgy steps or 2)simply climb out our bedroom window.!!We opted for number 2 !!One of us passed out the breakfast, cutting board for the bread and utensils and before you knew it breakfast was served under the sun umbrella. The walkway around the small harbour was just starting to get a few early risers even though it was now getting towards 9am. ... read more
