Cool Pool
Andrew, John and Lauren visible in the pool with Sea of Crete in the background. Photo taken from our hotel balcony. We were tempted to enter only “went swimming” as today’s entry, and it would cover most of the day’s events, but we’ll add a few additional details. We swam in the pool. We swam at the beach. We rested. We swam at the beach again. We swam in the pool again. Andrew and Lauren ordered ice cream that they were served while sitting at bar stools located in the swimming pool. The weather was warm and the pool water warm enough that a person could swim all day in the pool and never need to get out. After days of visiting historic sites and ruins, the kids were stoked for exploring this very important aspect of the Greek islands and simply could not get enough of playing in this uncrowded pool. Although we had planned to leave much earlier, we left to explore the town of Chania in the late afternoon with the idea that we would get our dinner there. We had in mind a Turkish restaurant and had mapped directions on our computer. We took a cab into the center of the old town deciding to explore by walking to dinner. Following the mapped route exactly, the neightborhood got
Beach Day!
Andrew loved the warm sea water and playing in the waves more and more residential and cat-infested and simply did not look at all like either a tourist area or an area where one might find good Turkish food. But being in Greece and having learned that things are not always as they may at first seem, we did not lose hope until we were standing on the exact spot shown to us by our computer…but alas, only cats. We walked back to the main part of town. John carried Andrew on his back as penance for being wrong and because it was more pleasant than the alternative. Our master navigator then consulted a second computer source on the location of our intended restaurant and got new coordinates. This time, we headed off in a direction where at least food might be available. In short order, we arrived at the new coordinates to find a sign leading us down a back alley to our pre-selected restaurant. There, we found (along with cats) another sign indicating that the restaurant was closed for a summer holiday. In an act of desperation (swimming makes one hungry) Lauren uncharacteristically seized control and directed us down a different alley, announced that she saw three perfectly good
Swimming in the Sea
Andrew and John enjoy the water restaurants on this street and that we should pick one and sit down. We did. The dinner at our outdoor table at Mediterranean in old town Chania was one of the best we have had in Greece; the food seemed authentic and very tasty, the prices reasonable, the waitress pleasant and the wine very welcome. After our meal, which ended with a complimentary dessert and flask of Raki brought by our waitress, we headed a block down the street to pick up some pastries for the kid’s dessert and some lunch for tomorrow’s hike through the Samaria Gorge. It was 10 PM again, and our bus leaves for the gorge at 5:45 AM tomorrow morning, so we quickly headed for a taxi stand back to the hotel and bed.
