Hepsi ,tam bir özveri timsal... read more

Cologne is a city city totally rebuilt. Everything in the city was destroyed in World War 2 except the cathedral. It was saved from allied bombing because it was used as a navigational aid by allied bombers. It was one of the few landmarks that was recognizable from high altitude. The cathedral begun in 1248 and not completed until 1880. It is a masterpiece of high Gothic architecture and one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. Some idea of how the cathedral may be glimpse in the first picture. We we in Kunigswinter about 15 to 20 km from Cologne on top of a hill at the ruins of an castle where I snapped a long distant photo towards Cologne. The day was overcast one can understand just how prominent the cathedral is.... read more

A slow start to the day as we cruise from Cologne overnight into the Rhine Gorge. With numerous castles along the banks, our tour director has likened the Rhine Gorge to a Grand Slam Tennis Match (looking from side to side at all the sights). Very cold outside so everyone positions themselves in the lounges next to the windows. Not me and Bruce, we have braved the cold and gone up to the sundeck - will probably never thaw out but definitely worth it. After lunch we visited the small township of Rudesheim. Christmas Market # 2 which was absolutely magical. Christmas here so vastly different from home - rugged up in jackets, scarves, beanies drinking mulled wine in the cafes. Just love it. The markets have all sorts of beautiful Christmas ornaments and also heaps ... read more

Travelling thru the boarder to Germany, a stunning sunshiny day. We had a Rhine river cruise, lovely and peaceful. Passed many castles and vineyards on the side of steep hills, and lots of villages. Checked into hotel at Bad honnef (bad meaning bath) which is right on the Rhine River for the night. Tomorrow up early for our trip to Amsterdam.... read more

Docked at a relatively big city, so the Internet connection should be good. We both slept in an hour later than usual. Roger until almost 6:00am and me a little before 7:00. It was overcast and brisk out on deck. At 8:30am we were again underway. The morning included a river tour and stories about the many castles along our way. The city of Koblenz is at the confluence of the Rhine and Mosel Rivers. As you approach from the south the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is above you and on the right. When we rounded the peninsula, to turn the boat around for docking, the very impressive statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I comes into view. It was built as a tribute to his unifying Germany in the late 1800s, destroyed by the Allies in 1945 and rebuilt ... read more

10:00pm local time at Rüdesheim am Rhein in Germany. Yesterday we thought we could walk into Strasbough, France, but it turned out we were docked on the Germany side of the river. A 15 minute walk got us to our bus and the drive was another 20 minutes. We then walked another 15 minutes to get to the main square. As we rounded the corner the Notre Dame Cathedral of Strasbough seemed to fill our view. It is spectacular in a gaudy, over-the-top way, that only those from long ago with unlimited funds and labor could have had built. The tour inside wasn't too long, as the church would be closing so those who wanted to pay admission could come back in and watch the astronomical clock run through its noon show. To start from the ... read more
