Bad Internet and being close to the end of our holidays the travel blog is not looked after. Also we do a lot on Face book that is a lot easier. We went from Valkenburg to Etten leur to visit family. We stayed there a few days and were entertained by Jola & Hugo. A pity the weather was not that good so part of those days were shopping days and visits to garden centres. Leaving Etten Leur the weather improved a lot and we had nice sun shine in Boppard. We really enjoy the time on the Rhine. Rhine and Mosel are here very close together so we even visited part of the Mosel as well. We never have been to Cologne. One day we took the car to visit this big city. Traffic in ... read more

Remagen, Germany July 15th After finishing the North Sea coast across Holland, we started the Ems Canal that runs south from Weener. Shipping on the canal seemed minimal compared to the Rhine River. Our campsite in Lathen was on the canal and were able to see lots of recreational boating. After the lack of trees in Friesland, the canal was lined with them and it made for great cycling. After the Ems Canal we jumped on a train back to Koln. The German train system is set up for taking your bike on board. Upon arrival in Koln, we wheeled our bikes into a elevator that took us to the ground level. It's so great! We are headed south towards France. We will see friends in Strausbourg and maybe continue to Mulhouse. It's kind of a ... read more

Friday 10 July 2015 After a good night's sleep in our wonderfully appointed apartment in the Mosel Valley village of Sankt Aldegund we have a full day to get to Metz by late afternoon. We went to say our goodbyes to our host and were introduced to a Belgian couple who were staying on for a few days. Their English was very good, explained by "Nobody else speaks Flemish so we have to learn other languages...". It would have been easy to stay on enjoying the chance to chat with this couple and our hosts but we have some serious meandering to do up the Mosel Valley, so it was into the car for a self-directed excursion. Polly can be silenced but faithfully records our movements on her map, so we never feel entirely alone. Our ... read more

Thursday 9 July 2015 When we set out from our overnight lodgings this morning we did not imagine the day would unfold the way it did. Our plan was to take a leisurely drive up the valley to our next hotel. The GPS said it would take 58 minutes. So we planned on taking all day. Polly returned from her day off but as she was so exhausted from all her shopping we let her sleep until it was time to locate the hotel. Our original plan for this adventure was be flexible. If something different or exciting should come along then our plan would change accordingly. We have discovered on numerous occasions that our red number plate acts like a magnet for other cars. Today was a classic. As we drove through an interesting village ... read more

Wednesday 8 July 2015 Today is for meandering up one side of the River Rhine and down the other. We have made the brave decision to turn Polly off and find our own way using nothing but sheer Kiwi intelligence. There is a feeling of daring and anything could happen as we negotiate the roads leading to the east bank of the Rhine. A couple of attempts at connecting with the appropriate road and we were there close to the water, trying to snatch photo opportunities before they disappeared. Castles on hill tops, river views often with barges, sometimes two joined together, large river cruise boats, small river cruise boats, trains constantly running past, as well as car ferries taking the place of bridges, all these and more kept our cameras working hard as we made ... read more

Monday 6 July 2015 Our brief stop in Hannover was over very quickly. We needed a night's accommodation and Hannover drew the short straw. As we left the city we followed a tram line for some distance before heading west. The suburbs we drove through seemed attractive but time here was seemingly too brief. Another day perhaps. The first 30 kilometres drive was through farm land with grain the main crop. Last night's thunderstorm had flattened some of the fields. It was pleasant driving and if we did not have such a long drive today it would be the road to continue on. Soon it was back on the A2, and then the A1, heading west towards cities like Koln, Essen, Bonn. After a coffee stop and later a lunch stop we were soon on the ... read more

Dzień zaczęłyśmy od kąpieli i małej zimnej kawy. Sprawdziłam skąd i o której odjeżdża autobus. W informacji kupiłyśmy mapę Koblenz i poszłyśmy coś zjeść. Miałyśmy duże szczęście bo trafiłyśmy na fajnie wyglądającą restaurację która miała certyfikat of excellence Tri... read more

Podróż do Niemiec zaczęła się już wczoraj. Gloria pojechała około 18-ej ponieważ była zaproszona przez Misię na bowling - jej urodzinową imprezę z przyjaciółmi. Ja dojechałam do Misi tuż przed północą. Podróż trwała 20 min i szybko minęła. Droga na lotnisko trwała 50 min ... read more

Where the hell is Landau/Pfalz, many of you might ask now. You have no idea how many times I had to explain this to people during the two years that I lived in the small town. It is located roughly between Karlsruhe and Heidelberg in the southwest of Germany (no, the one on Lake Constance is Lindau…) and is surrounded by vineyards. Consequently there are a lot of wineries. The landscape around Landau is rather scenic, with the Pfälzerwald close by, which is great for hiking, climbing, and cycling. Alsace is not far. Thus the surroundings are really nice, but Landau is of course anything but a cosmopolitan city. I did my undergraduate studies there, not by choice, but I was sent there by ZVS, an authority that at the time allocated applicants who wanted to ... read more
