lWe had a good run from Regensburg and were ready for a few family visits. Two cousins, one in Grundau and the other in Neunkirchen. Always nice to see the family again for we had so many good times in that part of the world. Our first visit was at Grundau. We stayed there the night only. Liz had a cousin there. Very nice reception as usual the coffee and kuchen is the main start to all the food they put in front of you. Next day we left for Neunkirchen. There is the main part of Liz family of her mothers side. Again so much food you can't eat it. The grilling, for us barbeque and the lioner sausages were marvellous. We made visits to Kirkel a small place close to Neunkirchen where we met ... read more

Looking for all the "EST" Bump the boat jars against the dock. It’s 6am and the assistant Captain to the ASSISTANT Captain is at the wheel. Everyone has to learn to park the boat sometime. It just happens to be today. I roll out of bed and make my way to my breakfast spot in the front of the boat. Good morning Mr. Vaughan, dids you’s like jour vakeup call? Ya Ya Ya We all are laughing as he’s pouring me cup of coffee and the boat lurches again. Kirsten joins me and we have a nice quite breakfast after the boat was finally tied up. After breakfast we stroll off the boat and into town. Bernkastel is a cute village on the Mosel River. Its village square is surrounded with half-timber houses clustered together like ... read more

Sailing on the Romantic Rhine I rollover as the boat floats effortlessly on a carpet of water. I look out our window, it’s raining and I don’t care. Kirsten snuggles up next to me as we both slip back into our dreams. WOW! What a great night sleep. I gently slip out of bed and out the door before Kirsten knows I’m gone. I’m the only one up besides the crew who is busy getting breakfast ready for the early risers. I sit at the bow of the boat watching the rain as I sip my coffee. Mr. Vaughan would you like your usual breakfast. Yes, please. Yea, it’s gotten that good. By the time my breakfast arrives, Kirsten is standing next to me. I’m getting spoiled you know, yea me too. Around 9am Claudia comes ... read more

Why change a habit that gives you more time relaxing? So we continued our 10am start for breakfast while we gave some thought to a walk to the nearby town of Neef on the other side of the river just downstream. With having breakfast so late we are now rarely needing lunch and so have we worked out an idea to keep our weight down having just 2 meals a day? Probably not when it comes to the nibbles and pre dinner drinks that must make up for one less scheduled meal per day. Around midday we headed off to walk down the river and across the bridge to Neef where we thought we might explore the town for a wine bar with a terrace facing the river. On the way we took a slight diversion ... read more

As hoped and forecasted the weather looks good for a walk up the hill behind our apartment and into the forest. We have a plan of the trail that has an option of 4.8km or a 9km hike. The longer distance goes out onto a plateau and supposedly has great views of the river and surrounding area. We had our usual late breakfast at 10am.This is becoming a habit that we hope will not be hard to break when we get back home and have to go out to work. As we weren’t sure how long the hike would take which is down to whether we do the short or the long distance Gretchen prepared some vegemite sandwiches to go with the fruit and chocolate for lunch. We were confident that the weather would hold and ... read more

We had thought of doing the hill and forest walk today but our 9km walk yesterday has given us something in the Bank so we will put that off until tomorrow. Besides although it is Saturday morning here, it is Saturday night in New Zealand and that means rugby! Last week when the first test was played between Wales and The All Blacks we were in Lohberg and we only had radio coverage as I hadn’t been able to find a live stream on the computer and anyway we had to move on to the Czech Republic before the game finished on that day. However this morning I think I might have struck the jackpot and found a YouTube website streaming the game so here I am waiting as the clock on the computer screen counts ... read more

We don’t know who won the football game that Germany were playing when we went to bed last night. We had pulled down the shutters (required anyway because it remains light here until after 10.15pm) and that had muffled any noise coming from across the road where people had gathered to watch the game on a large screen in a garage. The weather is OK this morning and there is only a small chance of rain later in the day. We don’t plan to do too much that we can’t walk to while we are here so the blogs for the next five days could be a bit light in content(what was that I heard you say ‘thank goodness’!) However, we do have a need for an ATM to top up our dwindling supply of Euro ... read more
